Is it bad that I'm slightly happy about this?

(Obviously, I'm not happy about people losing their jobs - except maybe Riley)

Sex positivity was initially put forward as a means of removing the historical taboo of women making their own decisions about their sex life and what they wanted from it.

So being promiscuous should not be morally judged, fetishes are fine as long as they don't harm anyone, etc.

Sex work is a woman's decision and shouldn't be questioned, etc.

Except that's not how it pans out in real life.

Sex work should be scrutinised, and questioned. Morality is not something that lies with the worker, it lies with the punter. Anything else just plays straight into the hands of the pimps and traffickers.

And whilst promiscuity and fetishes are of course an individual's own choice, a 'movement' in their name can, and has, culturally evolved into pressure on women.

Almost every single article will reiterate how informed consent is essential and you should never do anything you don't want to do. And then always goes on to tell you to educate yourself.

And stop 'slut shaming' other women.

It may have started as a benign way of empowering women, but has ended up 'prude shaming'.

Anyone who didn't see this coming is either male, or naive.

nauticant · 08/05/2017 10:58

It's another attempt to make things more black and white in which the meanings of words have been twisted. The goal of to have in place a binary: you are either sex positive or against us.

It's another way of undermining people being comfortable in enforcing their own personal boundaries.

aginghippy · 08/05/2017 10:58

"Unexpected loss of earnings" - the point has been made many times, but I really do wonder who has been funding them - clearly someone has pulled the plug.

They are asking members of the public for money, but there is nothing on the web site, as far as I can see, that says who or what the money will go to. They only say that it is not a non-profit organisation. They don't say what it is. Is it a company? A partnership? Will all the money go directly to Sandra Kim's bank account?

VestalVirgin · 08/05/2017 11:02

You get more feminist output per hour by funding the fanfic archive AO3 than by funding Everyday Sexism.
Fanfic is free and can be everything, Everyday Sexism aims to write misogynist drivel.

No real feminist would give them a cent - misogynist drivel, we can have for free. (And apparently even the lovers of misogynist drivel are of the opinion that they can get it for free)

JigglyTuff · 08/05/2017 11:08

aginghippy - they explicitly say that are not a non-profit: • Is this donation tax-deductible?: No, it is not tax-deductible since we’re a social justice committed organization, but not a nonprofit.

I remain beyond furious with EF for giving toxic and irrelevant Riley the oxygen of publicity they so desperately seek. I hope the lot of them end up having to get proper jobs and finding out how bloody navel-gazing and ordinary the lot of them are

aginghippy · 08/05/2017 11:43

Yes, that's what I meant Jiggly. I guess my post wasn't clear.

Being a tax-deductible non-profit in the US is the equivalent of being a registered charity in the UK. They say what they are not. They don't say what they are.

JigglyTuff · 08/05/2017 11:49

Sorry - misunderstood!

JigglyTuff · 08/05/2017 11:50

Actually, re-reading your post, I see that I totally misread it - it was perfectly clear. I'm not wearing my glasses and obviously should be Blush

inaclearingstandsaboxer · 08/05/2017 13:16

Just read some comments about Riley

Trans-trender is such a good word!

Terfing · 08/05/2017 13:46

Although, EF has helped many people achieve #peaktrans. For that we should thank them?

But I guess Buzzfeed and the HuffPo can easily do that too!

Riley is the worst but that tweet above about the pink cock ring is from a parody account. Check your sources people!

iatetoomuchchocolateyesterday · 09/05/2017 13:54

apparently their viewing figures are at an all time low. So even if they do scrape together the funds to stay afloat through May hopefully they will fail to get the long term investment to keep going. I don't say that lightly, but I think their website is the enemy of women and feminism and the drivel they peddle hurts women. The world will be a better place without their misogynistic nonsense.

nauticant · 09/05/2017 14:03

In that case it might be a good time to save some of the more eyebrow-raising articles for posterity. You know, like having to hand those adverts from the 1940s with doctors recommending fags to their patients.

ArcheryAnnie · 09/05/2017 14:04

Kudos to whoever on twitter has been informing the #SaveEF hashtag with the reality of EF.

I imagine the takeup of their enormously expensive snake-oil course hasn't been enough to keep them afloat?

Maybe they can get proper jobs and just mouth off on the internet in their spare time, like the rest of us do.

Datun · 09/05/2017 14:08

YorkshireTree

Ah. That was a spoof?

I did wonder. I was torn between thinking surely even Riley wouldn't say something like that, and then being quite impressed by his sense of humour.

WhereYouLeftIt · 09/05/2017 20:38

That Riley twitter parody is actually quite funny!

misfitt · 28/08/2017 17:13

Everyday feminism does very little for the original feminist position except undermine it with contributors like Riley "having sexual preferences is sexist and having dating preferences is racist" Dennis and Anita Sarkeesian who thinks "everything is sexist and everything is racist." That includes Batman's bottom and I kid you not that is one of her many Issues.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/08/2017 17:21

I see they are still trying to "save" it...

WhereYouLeftIt · 29/08/2017 17:02

Ah, this turned up on active and reminded me of EF. What a joy! Just had a quick flick around it, still completely up its own arse. I don't know how these people manage to leave the house in the morning, such is their fear of oppressing someone, or misusing their privilege.

The bios of The Team have been significantly simplified, they almost sound like proper people (although still churning out the same old shite).

Datun · 29/08/2017 18:36

The bios of The Team have been significantly simplified

Someone must have read this thread!

OlennasWimple · 29/08/2017 20:28

hang on, EF only had one month left! It was going to have to fold immediately! We were all supposed to give them all our money!

Presumably they scraped together enough to keep going a bit longer - or there was no funding crisis in the first place

AssignedPerfectAtBirth · 29/08/2017 22:06

Where

Grin

I also think Anita Sarkeesian is a pain in the arse

GerundTheBehemoth · 30/08/2017 06:53

Everyday Feminism is a great name for a website, but having had a look I'm wondering if the whole thing is a parody. This article CAN'T be real. Even from the first paragraph, when the author calls a salad 'fierce'.

CancellyMcChequeface · 30/08/2017 07:24

Where I just had a read of the bios. I can't imagine what it must have been like before! There's still a person described as: "a minority of minorities: female assigned at birth, mostly black, disabled, autistic, genderqueer, aromantic, pansexual, kinky, demisexual, poor, noetisexual, polyamorous, singleish, RA, a survivor, intersex, and left-handed."

Confused
GerundTheBehemoth · 30/08/2017 07:52

Just looked up 'noetisexual', as that's a new one on me. I found this, which explains (eventually). It seems to mean 'liking people for their personalities' - how novel!
