Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Women in certain industries.

Just wondering what your thoughts are on certain industries being male dominated in terms of jobs? I'm thinking mainly science, technology and engineering industries. Is it sexism at play?

There is a follow up question to this.

I would define mean spirited as starting a thread with a goady goal in mind just to try to prove everyone wrong.
This isnt a discussion.

My breasts keep getting in the way of my calculator.

Tonka4 · 16/03/2017 13:50

Missing the point entirely, yet again. My only argument is that mean and women go into different fields of work because of the choices they make.

This is probably a good time to bring back this wonderful thread

Yes, STEM is in fact a phallic code - the 'stem' is the penis, and it's a prerequisite to have one. Women science undergraduates have to stick a pencil case down the front of their pants to compensate. I read that somewhere before I surrendered myself to my biological destiny of 'nurturing' and watching America's Next Top Model.

VioletHornswaggle · 16/03/2017 13:57

I work in a male dominated environment and rarely encounter overt sexism but the career structure does not lend itself well to both parents working, certainly not in the same career field so one often gets left behind.
Someone asked you up thread if you had heard of unconscious bias. Studies have shown that employers faced with identical CVs one with a male name, the other female chose the male CV as preferred often citing reasons that it held more credibility and other nebulous assertions. When the CVs were swapped with names, again the male name was preferred. When CVs were submitted anonymously, the male leaning bias disappeared. This is also the case for people with names perceived to be more commonly found within ethnic minorities. So whilst in your own little utopic world you may believe it's the best person for the job, bias plays a huge and disabling role.

In addition, studies of airliner passengers showed that they preferred the idea of being flown by a male flight deck team or at least a male captain. Passengers were often articulate with precision why they would prefer a male pilot, with most stating reasons such as 'I would feel safer, or a male pilot probably possesses greater skills for calmness under pressure.'

I think fundamentally men and women are different and wired to enjoy different things

OP it's more about early socialisation, something you would understand if you took the time to find things out before forming an opinion.

The good thing about opinions is that they are flexible. They can change when people look for or aquire new information.

I think you have said that you believe sexism exists, right?

I think you have said that you believe sexism exists, right? What are the things that you think are accounted for by sexism?

It must be nice to live in a world where all options are available and all attempts succeed. Where there are no external influences. Where we are only limited by our own lack of vision or will. Like a vacuum if you will.
A linear world where we grow up in perfect equality, go to school then get a career. Its so heartwarming.

Datun · 16/03/2017 14:00

Oops. I hope that still makes sense.

PoochSmooch · 16/03/2017 14:02

I'm happy to talk.

Now THAT is a scientific fact. "happy to listen", not so much.

I think I'm getting that hang of this, though. Women are naturally nurturing, and drawn to touchy feely stuff, except feminists who are mean spirited and nasty. So are feminists unnatural? Defective women? Actually men?

squishysquirmy · 16/03/2017 14:05

Also I couldn't be a pilot because without the added weight of a penis, the centre of gravity would move too far aft, thus reducing the moment arm between the centre of gravity and the aerodynamic centre and reducing the longitudinal stability of the aircraft.
Or something.

ExplodedCloud · 16/03/2017 14:05

Feminists. Unnatural beings. Probably created in a lab. Probably therefore by the mens in STEM related fields. Hmm

FlaviaAlbia · 16/03/2017 14:07

Like the stepford wives but with masochists ExplodedCloud Grin

PoochSmooch · 16/03/2017 14:08

squishy Grin

That's proper sciencing, that is. You unnatural thing, you!

DJBaggySmalls · 16/03/2017 14:08

squishysquirmy I love you. I will carefully bake for you thank offerings of cake and place it on an altar in your Name.

Datun · 16/03/2017 14:10

I think the OP has run off.

PoochSmooch · 16/03/2017 14:11

Next argument on deck is surely "The courts are sexist because residency is always awarded to the mother", isn't it? I'm not 100% sure if I've got the latest approved list - my Sekrit Feminist Handbook for Bringing Down Teh Menz is from 2013? Anyone know which page we're on?

whoputthecatout · 16/03/2017 14:12

Has OP gone? Oh dear, just when I was pulling up a chair and opening the peanuts.....

Ecclesiastes · 16/03/2017 14:12

Give it up, OP. You're only a hero in your own head.

squishysquirmy · 16/03/2017 14:17

Thanks!

LeninaCrowne · 16/03/2017 14:19

How many women have gone into STEM careers and come up against arseholes like the OP - Many!
First you try and appease them, then you argue with them, and then when you realise they are dinosaurs, by-pass them if you can!

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 16/03/2017 14:20

And Lonny it will actually. Roughly the same percentage of men and women will be applying for these roles so women will be at an advantage in this instance.

Firstly you don't know that the rough percentages will be the same; given the male:female ration in STEM subjects at university you'd be hard pushed to expect a 50:50 application level.

But even so, even if there was a 50:50 application rate, men won't be disadvantaged as a class because there would still be a minimum of 88% of them in that workforce.

This type of hiring initiative doesn't mean 'we'll hire the women even if they're worse than the men' by the way. It means 'we'll remove systemic barriers which stop women being hired.'

TimeforANewTwatName · 16/03/2017 14:20

I think OP has fallen out of a harry enfield sketch

Xenophile · 16/03/2017 14:25

Oh damn, I missed the psychology bit.

I do love an amateur psychologist telling me all about innate lady things. Makes me go all warm and fuzzy inside,
