Women in certain industries.

Just wondering what your thoughts are on certain industries being male dominated in terms of jobs? I'm thinking mainly science, technology and engineering industries. Is it sexism at play?

There is a follow up question to this.

Tonka4 is definitely purely on here to attempt to wind people up and create arguments, it's pitiful really. They definitely need to take up stamp collecting or something.

specialsubject · 16/03/2017 12:31

I was in that kind of industry some time ago. No real sexism issues apart from sometimes having to remind visitors that I wasn't a secretary.

On reflection, I was brought up with none of this 'girls don't' or 'it is feminine to be thick' that is sadly now very prevalent. Both my parents had science/engineering based jobs and females were just assumed as competent as males. Even if we did wear dresses.

there was much less of the pink and sparkly crap that goes round now and is everywhere. It must be very hard to avoid if you live somewhere with shops and advertising posters.

thanks, mum and dad. Smile

Tonka4 · 16/03/2017 12:33

Pooch Absolutely not. Men are not disadvantaged in that sense because men aren't choosing to go into those roles.

Men are, increasingly, being disadvantaged by companies now pushing for more women. EasyJet, for example, are trying to double the number of female pilots working for them. Great if you're a woman, not so great if you're a man. It should be based on merit and nothing more.

I think fundamentally men and women are different and wired to enjoy different things. Tell me honestly how many women you know who would enjoy spending the weekend fixing their car compared to how many men would enjoy the same thing?

I absolutely believe in equality between the sexes. That, however, is not the same thing as saying men and women are the same, because we're quite clearly not.

I am both nurtering and technically minded, by the way. I love trying to understand how things work - which is why I am disappointed with people who lazily dismiss complex problems with simple, shallow explanations that they have not bothered to research or think very deeply about at all. "It is wot it is". Especially if those doing so are members of the sex supposedly gifted with curiosity and technical minds.

Tonka4 · 16/03/2017 12:35

IAmAmy So because I have a different viewpoint to you I must be here purely to wind people up? Guess what, in life you're going to encounter people who don't think like you do. They're not all trying to wind you up.

Piss off with your sexist nonsense mate. I work in IT (proper techy) and can strip down a motorbike quite happily.

IAmAmy · 16/03/2017 12:38

Tonka4 no, because you started a thread, ignored all the sensible points made which refute the nonsense you'd decided you'd post before you even started it, claim "it doesn't matter" about an issue which you started the discussion of and posted nonsense which has been rubbished numerous times about being "wired differently". It's pretty obvious you wish to create an argument and intend to keep it going as long as possible posting the same thing with no intention to engage or consider you could be wrong (if you even believe what you're saying anyway). You should go and fix your car or something instead.

PoochSmooch · 16/03/2017 12:40

This is a feminism board, Tonka. We talk about feminist issues.

If you're that bothered about the poor men and their lack of opportunity, then get campaigning. Don't come and scold women by bringing out lazy old sexist tropes about the sexes being wired differently, ENDOF.

Can't be bothered to give this my A game. You're right, Amy.

squishysquirmy · 16/03/2017 12:41

I'd rather fix a car than scrub shit off a carpet. But I get on with what needs doing.
What do you do?
Are you an unemployed (and not very good) pilot looking to blame feminism for your problems?

Bluntness100 · 16/03/2017 12:41

I think it has everything to do with the choices men and women make.

Tonka4 · 16/03/2017 12:42

Welcome to 2017, where everyone wants to be a victim!

The problem with branding everything as sexist is that it discourages the notion of personal responsibility. If you're a woman and you want that engineering job then apply and get the job! There's nothing stopping you except yourself.

I'd say the exact same thing to men wanting to work in female dominated areas.

OP posts:
squishysquirmy · 16/03/2017 12:42

So what do you do Tonka?

Nonibaloni · 16/03/2017 12:43

tonka come on! How many men happily spend all Sunday in the kitchen? Loads cause male chefs are cool right now!

And lots of women are into cars and bikes. Maybe you are uncomfortable round these woman because they don't conform?

When I said woman and girls have lots of questions for me I mean specific questions, like wifi and router problems (which I can't answer at all). And how many mums have to know about bikes and mine craft and lego?

My point is the interest is there, the knowledge is there, just needs somewhere to develop.

leave anyone with a box of lego and tell me what happens.

IAmAmy · 16/03/2017 12:43

More proof the OP is on the wind up as they've ignored the fact women who are engineers, IT technicians etc have already posted on this thread.

Tonka4 · 16/03/2017 12:45

squishy I've flown with female pilots who were very good pilots. They got there because they put the work in. The same work that a male pilot would put in.

I'm sure if you told those female pilots that it's sexism stopping women doing certain roles they'd tell you to get a grip, take some responsibility and work for it.

OP posts:
PoochSmooch · 16/03/2017 12:47

You have no idea what jobs the women on here do, Tonka. Do you think we're all professional feminists or something? What funny little ideas you have Grin

squishysquirmy · 16/03/2017 12:47

Probably more work actually.
So yes, you are a shit pilot who wants to blame feminism for your lack of career progression.
Not smelling the irony yet?

Tonka4 · 16/03/2017 12:48

Of course some women like engineering and some men like nursing. But they are the exception rather than the rule.

Why is it so terrible to think that men and women, in general (that's the important bit), enjoy different things?

OP posts:
Tonka4 · 16/03/2017 12:48

Why more work squishy?

OP posts:
FlaviaAlbia · 16/03/2017 12:50

Women prefer nursing because for the most part they are more nurturing and maternal than men. Men in general are more technically minded and more interested in how things work hence going into STEM fields more often.

Gosh yes, no sexism there at all Hmm

Bluntness100 · 16/03/2017 12:50

Op, can I ask what gender you are please?

Tonka4 · 16/03/2017 12:52

Flavia Don't let facts get in the way of a good argument.

I'm sure you're quite happy to pull up facts and statistics that will prove your point whilst dismissing any that don't.

OP posts:
IAmAmy · 16/03/2017 12:53

nypost.com/2017/03/12/meet-the-hero-vet-who-fought-the-taliban-while-battling-sexism/

She'd probably tell people coming out with outdated sexist tripe to get a grip, then pipe down.

EBearhug · 16/03/2017 12:53

OP, have you ever heard of unconscious bias or socialisation?

ChocChocPorridge · 16/03/2017 12:54

Tonka - men have been enjoying advantage when it comes to hiring for a long time - have a read of this:

www.pnas.org/content/109/41/16474.abstract

There's another one you can google about blind auditions for orchestras which demonstrated the same thing when it came to assessing musicians.

At my girls school, every girl did CDT, we all did electronics, we all enjoyed putting the logic boards together and hammering, drilling, glueing and moulding.

At my mixed school, no girls did CDT (except for me) - now, which sounds more likely - that the girls one county over were just totally different, and didn't enjoy making things, or that there was something dissuading them from taking CDT?
