Dr Tanya Byron ignoring gendered violence

Apologies for the paywall, it's The Times. I'm genuinely gobsmacked that Tanya is totally overlooking the bullying a teenage girl is receiving at the hands of a another kid, despite the fact that it's physical assault.

Yes, bullies have issues and yes this child need support, but the poor bullied girl is basically being told to suck up the physical and emotional bullying because the other child's feelings are more important. She's being set up for a lifetime of toxic relationships where she is walked all over, unless the adults in her life help her to recognise that the other child's bullying is absolutely not her responsibility.

I can't believe Tanya Byron gave this advice!

I can't get this out of my head. Given that we know that almost all bullies and abusers have themselves faced abuse as children (and so, to some extent, all abuse comes "from a place of vulnerability") would Tanya Byron advise women in domestic abuse situations to stay in the relationship, ensure their abuser gets as much support as possible, try to be understanding and "de-personalise" the abuse, and take all responsibility for the abuse away from the perpetrator? Or does this analogy not work and am I missing something?

venusinscorpio · 16/03/2017 17:05

It does work.

Yes, the analogy works. If this friend declared themselves lesbian & came on to this girl, would Tanya Byron expect her to tolerate that too?

TB was giving advice to a man who had met a woman, both of them elderly. He had seen her 'almost every weekend for three months', so less than 24 days and wanted to move in with her. She didn't want to and it wasn't even prepared to say she loved him. TB suggested she get therapy.

venusinscorpio · 16/03/2017 17:20

I suggest TB gets therapy.

TB hasn't responded on Twitter despite loads of comments asking her to reexamine what she said. Disappointing.
