In solidarity with women's marches across the globe on 21st January there will be a march in London, ending up at Trafalgar square.

It is a show of numbers to condemn many harmful attitudes towards women, minorities of race and religion, LGBTQA+ peoples and survivors of sexual assaults.

These issues will not go away by this march, but it is to remind to the global audience that they are prevalent and not enough is being done to curb harmful rhetoric and actions against these people's.

I went to an event in London on FGM recently, with Leyla Hussein of The Girl Generation, and one of the questions was "Why isn't there more outcry about this?"

The answer given was "Because it's about controlling black women and girls and their sexuality."

People marched about women's rights over their own bodies and these girls need to be included. They're having their pussies, not grabbed, but cut out. It all needs to be fought against and stopped.

(And before anyone asks, there was a question about male circumcision. The answer was that the male equivalent of FGM would be full amputation of the penis).

I'm saying I'm stay silent. Nor am I saying other women should stay silent. I work in my own small ways to try and ensure that black womens in my country are recognised. I go out of my way to meet and befriend black women. My work involves supporting new immigrants mainly women and children. My volunteering is almost exclusively women and babies and I work hard to improve access to services for those who don't speak English.
I'm a white woman rasining Muslim sons.

I've spent much time working in rural communities to build cohesion.

But I won't speak for black women. My silence on issues that effect them isn't the silence of ignorance but rather giving and making space for them.

Oh god I realised I've probably whitesplained race relations in feminism. I didn't mean to be a dick

Here's one very simple thing everyone can do to support victims of FGM in London - please?

Sign this petition to support the Acton FGM Community Clinic, who have been told they will lose their Council funding this March.

Done, thanks for posting, EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans
Any legal cases pending to sue for GBH for the perpetrators of"FGM"?

theDudesmummy · 23/01/2017 15:39

I was at the march in London and I am very glad I was. I will also be at the Stand Up to Racism march (its in March not Feb as someone else said). Do join us! chuffingtrain since when is 100 000 people a "puddle"? (not to mention 2.5 million worldwide). We stood in the freezing cold for two hours in Grosvenor Square before we could even start marching because there were just so many people. And glad to do so!

BonjourMinou · 23/01/2017 17:17

Have signed the FGM petition, thanks for posting. Maybe start a thread in petitions, too so more people are aware of it? I think there would be a lot of support on mn for this petition if people knew about it.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 23/01/2017 17:46

Thanks, woman and Bonjour. Good idea, I'll do that.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 23/01/2017 20:42

Signed. Thanks for alerting me about the petition.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 23/01/2017 21:08

Thanks Prawn.

I've shared it on Twitter too, and what's almost the first response? "What about male genital mutilation?"

Fucksake.... Fortunately after a recent talk where someone asked the same question, I knew the answer. To be on a level with FGM, we're talking a full amputation of the penis.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 23/01/2017 21:08

Oh, said that above, sorry.

amispartacus · 24/01/2017 07:20

The reaction from predictable commentators has been predictable. Piers Morgan focused only on Madonna's comment - and dismissed marchers as rabid feminists. Katie Hopkins did the same. As did the Daily Mail.

And as for the President of the USA. It's like he dismissed all the marchers views and then someone told him that it's ok to march.

This does feel like a movement - he's already said he's pro life - although I am sure he didn't say that in his campaign. Or he did. Or he changed his views. The foreign funding for groups that advise on abortions has been cut.

What other things will change in his Presidency?

ami

Not only that but Piers explained what real feminism is

Which was jolly kind of him

amispartacus · 24/01/2017 08:28

Which was jolly kind of him

Grin

Because he's a feminist. Just not a rabid feminist. Or a foul mouthed feminist. Grin

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 24/01/2017 08:41

I do sometimes drool while sleeping

So i am probably a rabid feminist

But only when i am sleeping...

Part time rabid feminist

amispartacus · 24/01/2017 08:44

Piers Morgan is rattled by this. And so dismissive.

Again - you want to ignore him but then you also want to challenge him. But by challenging, you are engaging and generating advertising etc.

Posted this on another thread, but the women's marches worried them, and this article on how it might develop:

It seems that a lot has annoyed people - the Netherlands wants an international fund to replace the funding lost by the USA -as signed here
