Women's March London 21st January

In solidarity with women's marches across the globe on 21st January there will be a march in London, ending up at Trafalgar square.

It is a show of numbers to condemn many harmful attitudes towards women, minorities of race and religion, LGBTQA+ peoples and survivors of sexual assaults.

These issues will not go away by this march, but it is to remind to the global audience that they are prevalent and not enough is being done to curb harmful rhetoric and actions against these people's.

Planet Male Entitlement.

BeyondTheStarryNight · 16/01/2017 11:05

I saw a comment on a Facebook group that the Washington (?) "women's" march has been somewhat hijacked too. Of course I can't bloody find it now to quote...!

theDudesmummy · 16/01/2017 13:11

I will be marching. The cis/trans issue etc is not in the forefront of most people's minds in choosing whether to attend this event, I am sure. I would be surprised if most people on the London march would even be aware of it, even it is more of an issue in the US.

I support equal human and sexual rights for everyone, of whatever gender and however they identify, and that is what I (and hopefully my daughter) will march for. I have plenty of sympathy for transpeople but no more so than any other group in society who have faced predjudice and oppression. I plan to march with a banner quoting Audre Lorde, "I am not free while any woman is unfree". Whether you want to identify as a woman or not is not my business, but standing up for your freedom and human rights is, in my view.

Xenophile · 16/01/2017 13:14

Given that the entire facebook page and Twitter feed for the march has been almost exclusively about trans issues, you would have to be remarkably unobservant not to have noticed.

I'm still not travelling a few hundred miles to march for "all" genders, but I will be attending an event much closer to home for women.

theDudesmummy · 16/01/2017 13:23

I think a lot of people belonging to groups who are encouraging their members to march on Saturday will have got their info from their own group/organisation and not have read those tweets etc. I don't really do Twitter, and I read information about the march on the FB page yesterday, when I didn't see any of this stuff, and on the Womens Equality Party page, where there was nothing about it. Of course I am now aware from MN, though.

It's a pity, but big marches and political events aways have diverse groups involved which are not necessily in agreement or at peace with each other. I recall marching against the G8 summit in Edinburgh in 2005 and the march being pretty much hijacked by anarchists. I am anything but an anarchist. It was quite scary.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 16/01/2017 13:45

I like your Audre Lorde quote, theDudesmummy.

claraschu · 17/01/2017 03:14

I am an American living over here, and I am marching because I hate Trump.

This seems better than doing nothing, and is clearly a protest about the direction the world seems to be going in.

HairyLittlePoet · 17/01/2017 12:07

So its a March by anyone.
For anyone.

It really should just be renamed "the nice big walk"

seafoodeatit · 18/01/2017 13:54

In solidarity with women and the real issues they face I will not be attending.

TalkingintheDark · 18/01/2017 15:09

I would have loved a nice big march that actually centred women. Been a long time. Oh well.

Better get used to the new way of being a second class citizen. So different from the old way, isn't it?

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 18/01/2017 15:32

A lovely big march would have been nice, wouldn't it? But now we're not even supposed to name ourselves, let alone march in that name.

Xenophile · 18/01/2017 17:08

The Winnipeg woman's march has basically asked feminists not to attend. Perfectly good with MRAs going though. Go women's march! So much about women's issues. Woohoo!

HmmHmm

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 18/01/2017 17:15

What? Have you got a link, as I can't find one.

PhoenixJasmine · 18/01/2017 18:14

On their Facebook page they've said that 'transmisogyny and violence will not be tolerated, misgendering is a form of transmisogyny, people who use transmisogynistic language are not welcome'.

How are they going to play, ice that? I hope loads of women turn up with really TERFy signs

MercyMyJewels · 18/01/2017 20:32

Xenophile

Whaaat? Where did you hear this?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 18/01/2017 20:42

So its a March by anyone.

The Liberal Democrats were once described as being "against nastiness in general and for nothing in particular"

This march is the same.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 18/01/2017 21:10

Down with this sort of thing? Hmm

BeyondTheStarryNight · 19/01/2017 09:03

I've certainly seen TERFy signs on Facebook. Lolz.

booklooker · 19/01/2017 19:45

I am confused:

The march is starting in Grovesnor Square (aka the US Embassy)

It is taking place on the day of Trump's inauguration

It wants to be seen as somthing much larger than an anti-Trump thing.

Yeah, the media will pick up on that!
Very naive organising.

No way I would go.

BeyondCanSeeTheEmperorsBellend · 19/01/2017 19:52

Wish they'd make up their minds, these totally-nothing-to-do-with-Trump marchers...
