Jenni Murray Woman's hour today (trans)

Hey,
Did anyone hear Jenni Murray on woman's hour today, her guest was India Willoughby. India is trans and was advocating that it was correct for the Dorchester to dictate that their female staff shave their legs.

India was very spiked in her conversation and implied Jenni was transphobic because the panalists didn't agree.

Again, a woman being called transphobic because they didn't agree with a transwoman's opinion.

Thank you Jenni for standing up for women!

"minority groups"

hmm.

transpeople may be small in number, but they are vastly better funded and supported than women's rights groups.

And if that minority group is actively campaigning to abolish women's rights, then yes, I'm going to try to take them down. I'm not going to be pleasant and budge up if they come after women and girls.

There are some trans allies who are working with women to find solutions that help both groups and we stand in solidarity.

But transactivists and their misogynist mates and their hateful agenda are not getting a free pass.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 03/12/2016 16:05

Is anyone else listening to the Woman's Hour Saturday recap show at the mo? I'm on an errand at the moment & due home shortly. If I miss any coverage of this I'd rather "listen again" later. TIA to anyone who is listening & can provide updates.

Sabistick · 03/12/2016 16:37

Just visited India w's Twitter page where the posters are saying Jenni Murray was transphobic and generally stroking India w ego. I listened to the interview as it happened and can't identify any time where it was the case, yet many times when IW was misogynistic. I thought the bitter joke about women needing make up and perfume summed up is view of women.

rookiemere · 03/12/2016 16:37

Hairy bashing a bellend is having me howling in laughter.

Your last post is very interesting. I work for a company very actively involved in trans rights due to a transperson who is fairly high up MtoF of course. I remember thinking about 2-3 years ago when our company had a dedicated transperson day and it seemed to be getting equal billing on the LGBT agenda, that it was strange that something which impacted such a tiny percentage of the employees was being given so much coverage.

Recently there was an internal article about the work of Mermaids with DCs and there were a few frankly baffling statements in response to one perfectly pleasant chap who dared to question if it was wise to be pushing the gender identity discussions onto pre-pubescent DCs. Shamefully I remained silent - I want to move to the area in question at some point, and I fully believe that if I spoke out against any of the trans agenda then this would be held against me at a later stage.

Shame really as I do have a lot of sympathy for people who believe they are trapped in the wrong body. But yes if it comes down to their rights, versus women's rights, then there's no real choice to be made.

ExitPursuedBySantaSpartacus · 03/12/2016 16:45

I'm sick to the back teeth of the fucking trans agenda and thank goodness that my life is not troubled by any.

PoochSmooch · 03/12/2016 16:48

Poor Jenni Murray. I wonder if she has reached her peak trans? I seem to recall a few months ago there was a programme about trans where she very much appeared to be toeing the accepted line on all things trans? And now this...

Today's ally is tomorrow's enemy of the state. It's not at all the first time that I've seen someone be embraced as a champion of trans rights, and then unwittingly fall foul of a change of rules and be denounced. The goalposts move every day, so it's not possible to keep up. That's how you silence people...

Elendon · 03/12/2016 16:54

It hasn't been highlighted on Women's Hour Saturday. Interesting.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 03/12/2016 16:56

I've been listening since about 4.15 Elendon and wondered if I'd missed it. Yes, it is interesting if it has gone unremarked.

Elendon · 03/12/2016 16:57

Rookie, you will be thrown under the bus regardless. You are a mere woman.

As a bisexual woman, I would like to start up another group. Trans has nothing to do with sexuality.

shinynewusername · 03/12/2016 17:11

I have emailed WH in support of Jenni even though she normally drives me round the bend.

I really hope India's appearance helped some listeners reach Peak Trans, though I fear that many others will have absorbed the message that you can't question the TA agenda without being labelled a bigot.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 03/12/2016 17:14

Ditto

rookiemere · 03/12/2016 17:16

Elendon as a p/t working DM, I'm already fairly used to the tyre marks Grin.

I can't see this trans agenda going on forever. If anyone took the trouble in our organisation to step back - the numbers are tiny. Oh actually - what an idiot I am - the numbers are tiny is perfect, it means my organisation can give the impression of being diverse to all, without having to offer those tiresome things that mostly women need like flexible working options.

Ok well I suspect there will be a real backlash in a few years with this youth agenda they are pushing. Fine for adults to make the decision to present as the other sex, or whatever its called, but encouraging DCs to delay puberty whilst they figure out what sex they are, seems a dangerous territory to march into. Fine again for the very small percentage of people genuinely trapped in the wrong skin, but as a 12-13 year old, who on earth wouldn't want to delay puberty with all the ghastliness it entails.

Elendon · 03/12/2016 17:24

Rookiemere Grin

Good luck, I wish you well.

shinynewusername · 03/12/2016 17:35

as a 12-13 year old, who on earth wouldn't want to delay puberty with all the ghastliness it entails

Quite right. I was so horrified by my pubes that I shaved them off with my poor Dad's razor. India would have approved Wink

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 03/12/2016 17:43

I think my Dad would have preferred it if DSis and I hadn't shaved our legs, as we also used his razor (without asking) and I remember him patching up his shredded face regularly. But, you're so right - India would have approved, so that's alright. Hmm

MeMyself1 · 03/12/2016 18:07

I commented on India's FB timeline (where s/he's bragging about having a double page spread in the Mail on Sunday about 'female grooming'!) I got blocked! Arrrrggghh! More transplaining!

Sporadicus · 03/12/2016 18:12

I loved how Jenni and Eleanor Mills didn't give IW the free pass to be monumentally sexist that's usually extended to trans guests on the BBC, so refreshing.

Funny how someone who's apparently always been a woman is so uncannily male in their opinions...

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 03/12/2016 18:16

I think the Mail is setting India up to be hated with that, as is the way of the Mail. Readers aren't going to take kindly to being ordered about re grooming practices by someone who has presented as a man most of their life.
Clickbait!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 03/12/2016 18:20

On Facebook India blocks people who ask questions India can't answer or give evidence that proves India is wrong about things (eg someone who linked a photo which showed that men at the Dorchester are allowed facial hair).
That's the lovely thing about Facebook, you can block people who don't back up your claims Smile

rookiemere · 03/12/2016 18:26

shinynewusername sorry slightly off-thread but your shaving story is quite reassuring. One of my friends is horrified because her 13 yr old DD shaved off her pubes and was worried it was down to watching porn or peer pressure, so not wanting to be an adolescent makes a lot of sense.

I will be clicking on the DM to see how India gets on tomorrow Grin. Provided she is pro-Brexit, I'm sure she'll be fine.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 03/12/2016 18:41

Placemarking to return when I've listened to WH. It keeps freezing on my phone.

rookiemere · 03/12/2016 19:09

I went on to the DM website to see if her article was there and I'm not entirely sure that India is going to get a hard time.

If you read the remarks about Madonna twerking with Ariane Grande, you'll see that most of the readers (even the female ones) seem to actively hate women, particularly ones deemed to be past their prime and too ballsy for their own good, so as India seems to rather distrust and dislike actual women as well I suspect she'll get an easy ride.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 03/12/2016 19:37

The more I hear from people who can't speak up about these issues the more determined I become to speak up whenever I can. I post in the comments section in articles all round the world as well as locally: America, Australia, Canada. I wish I had a permanent job but at the moment I can say what I like and I take full advantage.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 04/12/2016 08:48

The article is up ... it is the standard Q&A about trans.

www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-3997244/We-changing-bodies-match-gender-wanted-know-transgender-scared-ask.html

The one and only comment is pretty much spot-on and it would be perfect if it remained the only comment (I liked it).

Suspect that Willoughby is peed off that the article was not about how women should groom themselves according to TRA standards.

MistresssIggi · 04/12/2016 08:58

It's interesting that the question about what surgery someone has had done is viewed as being unacceptable (which is said in this article). I mean obviously it would be rude to intrusively ask a random transperson what genitalia they have, but when it comes to the issues involved in trans activism it is very very relevant, as safe space issues do kind of revolve round the presence or otherwise of a penis.
