Jenni Murray Woman's hour today (trans)

Hey,
Did anyone hear Jenni Murray on woman's hour today, her guest was India Willoughby. India is trans and was advocating that it was correct for the Dorchester to dictate that their female staff shave their legs.

India was very spiked in her conversation and implied Jenni was transphobic because the panalists didn't agree.

Again, a woman being called transphobic because they didn't agree with a transwoman's opinion.

Thank you Jenni for standing up for women!

I think the inclusion of Paris Lees was a clever way of sidestepping accusations of transphobia rather than from any real belief that Paris is any kind of feminist...

DeviTheGaelet · 05/12/2016 17:42

somedyke I'm so glad you are here
flax I'm not playing privilege bingo, I hate that too. But when a gay person chooses not to be out to avoid direct discrimination, they are still being oppressed as they are having to hide parts of their lives that straight people can be open about.

DeviTheGaelet · 05/12/2016 17:44

Sorry that was actually to tiger too!

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest · 05/12/2016 17:47

Yes Devi - I remember my (dickwad) Uncle once complaining about a gay colleague "always going on about his boyfriend and what they were doing at the weekend". This Uncle had photos of his family up at work, used to chat about his wife and family, had collections when (straight) people got married and could not see that the "flaunting" of a gay relationship paled in comparison to the usual discussions of private life.

FloraFox · 05/12/2016 17:56

IW rambled at the end of IW's contribution that all girls go through a phase of liking fairy dust and princesses (!!) and shaving legs is some kind of continuation of that Confused as well as saying it's not clean. Utter fool. If IW was not trans Jenny Murray and Eleanor ?? would have ripped into that.

Datun · 05/12/2016 20:01

As it only seems to be TRAs who are getting much of a public platform (India, Juno, Lees etc) I strongly suspect that any misogyny will become more and more evident.

It seems that India really had absolutely no clue why JM might be looking askance at her comments.

AskBasil · 05/12/2016 20:07

"If they could find a trans woman wanting to dress in trousers and not shave etc that would be a nice change. They will be out there"

Oh there are masses if them

The comments on the Alex Beardy link!

Transwomen and transsexuals apoplectic that he is redefining what it means to be a transwoman. 'No women have beards! It's an insult to transwomen'.

All without a hint of irony or self awareness. Astounding.

StripedTulip · 05/12/2016 20:38

I'm listening to it now on iPlayer - I've just heard India W. speaking about unshaven legs. She is outrageous - how dare she?!

Same old male entitlement. She's not been raised as a woman - what would she know about those awful adolescent & early 20s years when the pressure is so intense.

...Seems people who do not live in our shoes want to have an opinion on how it is supposed to be for us.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 05/12/2016 20:58

Oh damn - there was supposed to be an "I love this one:" before the final quote.

StripedTulip · 05/12/2016 21:18

Wth the Alex Beardy link: why isn't he defining "the bandwidth of how to be a MAN" and fuck off out of talking about redefining being a woman. I can define that for myself. Being a woman and all.

AskBasil · 05/12/2016 22:01

No StripedTulip, you need a man to show you how to be a woman.

Tut.

That's where women go wrong you see. Thinking they can define their own reality, when everyone knows they need a man to do that for them.

Datun · 05/12/2016 23:19

And, apparently, you now also need a man to show you how to be a proper transwoman. In-fighting and a massive pissing contest. It's almost too much.

I do hope DM sticks to her guns.

yet

It's almost too close to the mark!

PoochSmooch · 06/12/2016 06:57

That clip is great!

PosiePaRumPaPaPumParker · 06/12/2016 07:28

Is this a libfem training movie???

MorrisZapp · 06/12/2016 13:10

Oh good christ, if any of you would prefer not to see Eric Idle acting incredibly creepily whilst wearing a bizarre t-shirt /leotard combo and sporting a lovely beard and extolling female friendship....

Do not click the Justin link.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 06/12/2016 21:33

In the interests of preserving sanity I should mention the link is absolutely not one of Eric Idle being one of the female head scarf wearing Monty Python.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 06/12/2016 21:37

(Contd)characters.

I'm really annoyed that I actually know who Jasper Gregory is. He's a complete twerp but clearly thinks he is some sort of great thinker/artist/Internet sensation and I'm really annoyed having heard of him before in some way validates his delusion.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 08/12/2016 17:19

I've been busy with work this week and not had a chance to catch up with Woman's Hour on listen again. Has the India Willoughby shaving kerfuffle been mentioned at all this week on Woman's Hour?

Twogoats · 08/12/2016 17:24

joystir59 · 01/03/2017 22:20

user1477282676 India isn't a woman. He is a man. His POV on womanhood is irrelevant.

fakenamefornow · 01/03/2017 22:29

Coming back to the point. Surely the women can just say the identify as a man so don't shave their legs. In fact, surely they really ARE a man if they don't shave their legs.
