Great music by women

This may not be the right place or forum for this thread but just in case: I feel music is far too dominated by men. What great songs are there by women? I know most of my favourite songs are by women, I'd love to hear more.

Amy I assume you know the name Wolf Alice is inspired by Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber ?

IAmAmy · 05/03/2017 15:18

I do indeed Lass although I've not read the story itself yet! I must rectify this (especially given how much I incessantly listen to/promote the band who've adopted the excellent name)...

Oh that is so 80s. Haven't heard it in years. I had it as an LP (very much regret getting rid of most of my LPs as recently discovered LPs really do sound better and it's not just a myth made up by blokey record shop types)

IAmAmy · 08/04/2017 10:20

We have lots of LPs and an LP player which presumably still works - I'll have to ask my parents to test it out and listen (I recall them playing LPs on it a fair few years ago). Or try myself but I'd probably destroy something...

I play mine through a deck connected to a Bose speaker by Bluetooth. The sound quality will depend on the quality of the deck and speakers, and the amp if you use the traditional set up. My LPs are all analog pressings. I'm not sure if digital repressing would be different from a CD.

From my metal-ish playlist...

Delain
Greywind
Halestorm
Kittie
Minor victories
Nightwish
The pretty reckless
Within temptation
Epica
Hole
The lounge kittens
Vukovi
No doubt
Arch enemy

I have found my musical twins (or triplets?) solarrace and Beyonduser

I will forever be a riotgrrrl and a huge metal fan.

Here's my entry.

TinyRick · 09/04/2017 05:08

That is Otep btw. Yeah a female fronted band but she is the driving force within the band.

And also here is Kittie

Amy - she was so smart and funny & a great lyricist. I don't think I've heard anything of hers that I don't love. Also listen to Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Duffy, Rachel D'Arcy.

Also love Tracey Thorn's voice. Here she is in a collaboration with Massive Attack.

An eclectic list.

Whathaveilost · 10/04/2017 11:09

My current favourite female singers are
Amy Shark
Bishop Briggs
London Grammar. ( well they are a band with a female lead)
Mariqueen Maandig. ( I adore her vocals on A drowning by How to destroy Angels)
Alex the Astrounaut

TimeforANewTwatName · 10/04/2017 18:40

I recenlty heard Christine and Queens on radio one and really liked her songs.

Read up about her, she a very interesting person. She was given feminst literature to read growing up.

I've only heard a few songs and keep forgetting to find and download her album.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 15/04/2017 10:48

Courtney Marie Andrews was on Jools Holland this week. (And if a shout out for a man is allowed she is accompanied by the wonderful B J Cole on lap steel)

The album is fantastic- not a single filler.

IAmAmy · 15/04/2017 11:28

Another from Wolf Alice, fittingly on female friendship
