This may not be the right place or forum for this thread but just in case: I feel music is far too dominated by men. What great songs are there by women? I know most of my favourite songs are by women, I'd love to hear more.

That's rather wonderful, and quite incredible for me to think she's barely older than me!

It was wonderful. I've only just got back, hence awful typing and I'm supposed to be working tomorrow!

This festival was in holland but green man was good this year, with cate le Bon, Margaret glaspy, Julia holter, loose meat, and lots of other female led bands I'm too tired to remember the names of.

The cello player from bjork whose name I forget. Laura xxx?

Loads of amazing live acts - lots of great female musicians on the live scene right now and championed by bbc6 music.

This weekend I saw 8 girl led bands/ soloists and 4 led by boys Grin

IAmAmy · 14/11/2016 23:24

There are loads of amazing female/female fronted bands and artists out there now. Wolf Alice my particular favourite. Hopefully before too long lots of festivals will replicate the one you were at which sounds wonderful!

I feel this song deserves to be here too. Not quite so refined but a girl from near me when she was 13 (entirely written and performed by her):

RIP

I've just realised I was mixing Wolf Alice up with Wolf Mother

Wolf Alice are completely not an Australian heavy metal trio and yes I do like those videos you linked.

You might like Veronica Falls.

IAmAmy · 14/11/2016 23:28

Haha. Wolf Alice definitely aren't that, Wolf Alice are a magnificent band from London I am obsessed with Grin

I shall look up Veronica Falls!

Ani Difranco's first five albums are amazing...

lurkingnonparent · 14/11/2016 23:33

Laura marling! Also at green man.

lurkingnonparent · 14/11/2016 23:38

I need to go to sleep but of course there is also Joan as police woman, daughter, churches, Laura mvula, war paint, roisin Murphy etc. Some really amazing stuff out there. Please can I plug BBC 6 music for playing most of it and also having some excellent female presenters who really know their music. Cerys Matthews in particular for me.

IAmAmy · 14/11/2016 23:41

I should go to sleep too, been sidetracked by wonderful music by women! I love Chvrches and Daughter. Findlay is pretty good too

Is poster BertieBotts still around? I've just looked at her last in the 2011 thread and she could be me.

I'll add Lisa Gerrard/Dead Can Dance/This Mortal Coil and Elizabeth Fraser /The Cocteau Twins/This Mortal Coul.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 14/11/2016 23:49

I've not heard of Findlay but this acoustic song by her reminds me of Karen Dalton

(Have to say I can't take too much Karen Dalton)

IAmAmy · 14/11/2016 23:52

That Karen Dalton song is rather nice, though!

Check out Bronagh Gallagher. She is better known for her acting, which she is also excellent at, but she is amazing at singing and writing songs.

And you were wondering if this was the right place to post?Grin

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 15/11/2016 00:01

Edward Sharp and The Magnetic Zeros- 2 versions of Fire and Water. Jade Castrinos is unfortunately no longer with the band.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 15/11/2016 00:01

Cat Power

she has written some very powerful songs about love, hurt and her struggles with life they are painfully honest. the one above is about her time in rehab and she has a great voice

IAmAmy · 15/11/2016 00:01

Haha, how could I have had any doubts Wink

The video for Blush is interesting isn't it?

scaryclown · 15/11/2016 01:54

There are FUCKING MILLIONS!!!

my fave at the moment is L7..wargasm

'crocodile tears and dropping bombs
the oentagon knows how to tun us on..'

scaryclown · 15/11/2016 01:56

obv.. 'pentagon ' and 'turn' .:)

user1472515172 · 15/11/2016 02:03

And the video for Moaning Lisa Smile is very thought-provoking too!

So sad at the beginning how the bitchy nasty bio girls reject their shy "ugly" peer Sad

BUT THEN!!!! The transwomen embrace her because she is a different kind of woman, just like them!

And then in the dance contest the first two acts [made up entirely of females] get awful scores and the judges laugh at them for being so shit... But then the transwomen come on and guess what?????? They are AMAZING!!!!! They are better at womaning than the actual women and they win the contest!!! YAYYYYYY!!!

4/10 trolling mate. Not terrible but I've seen better. Also that band is a (very) low rent Lush.

user1472515172 · 15/11/2016 02:06

My favourite genre of music is bluegrass with female vocalists, mainly because they just get that men act like absolute trashcans most of the time.

And also because they are honest Smile
