And some people think we don't need feminism any more.

OP posts:

'good article from Hadley Freeman. White men are the most privileged people in the world. White American (and British) men have free access to the same, pretty good, education as the POC and women of those nations, and yet they have to whine and complain when the world doesn't actually hand them everything on a plate.

I'm sick of hearing theses reasons, these excuses, for voting for these hateful people with their hateful policies. I like how she compared them with toddlers'

This comment is ignorance! The second you say 'white men' or 'men' you become sexist! Nobody can JUDGE a race without racist sentiment, you can't possibly know a billion men, or 6/700 million white men are privilidged!!!

Have you ever lived in the middle east as a white man? You know how Kurds are treated?

I'm not sure which 'white men' you are reffering to about whining?

YonicProbe · 10/11/2016 11:58

"It's like a child calling a banana gay"

What?

Piz, well, given that I clearly said American and British white men, I'm struggling to see why you're asking me which white men I'm talking about.

Are you seriously saying that we can't call out sexism when we see it? Seriously? How old are you, you sound about 14.

Pizanfan · 10/11/2016 12:09

Buffy

Why would more than a 3rd of Latinos vote for a racist?

And why would over 20 million Americans who voted for Trump, who by the figures MUST HAVE VOTED FOR OBAMA, suddenly be racist?

When did I say 'if you point out sexism, you must be sexist'? If I didn't please take quotation marks off them, it's poor etiquette. I didn't say pointing out sexism is sexist, I point out sexism ALL THE TIME! I am a fierce feminist, but I use reason and logic, not FB memes.

If you keep calling sexism where there is none, the term sexist becomes a badge of honour, or more sadly a laughable term. I was overlooked for a position by a less experienced co worker recently, simply because he was a friend of my boss, and when I complained the second I used the word sexist I was called a feminazi and told I was extreme. Thats how people respond to sexism these days because of over use of the term when there is clearly no sexism, and it's sad for me, sad for women, and sad for feminists.

YonicProbe · 10/11/2016 12:11

"I was called a feminazi and told I was extreme. "

Wow. That is a very extreme reaction from your boss. Did you talk to HR about it?

Pizanfan · 10/11/2016 12:21

'White men are the most privileged people in the world. White American (and British) men have free access to the same, pretty good, education as the POC'

White men are the most privileged in the world, does not refer to 2 countries does it?

If you made a genuine mistake in your writing fair enough, but please be more clear in the future.

Pizanfan · 10/11/2016 12:22

Yonic

Luckily for him it wasn't my boss, it was just a coworker dismissing my claim. Don't worry HR have been informed and details of exactly why I will get promoted are on track.

HR were strangely not at his interview, which will help my case.

RiverTam · 10/11/2016 12:25

You're telling me to be more clear? After your garbled posts? Jog on back off to Tumblr.

DadWasHere · 10/11/2016 12:27

White men are the most privileged people in the world.

Spare me. This is a phenomenon brought about by automation and globalisation. The death of blue collar western jobs was only the beginning. Its most obvious impact has been on men, yes, because men fulfilled jobs requiring manual labour and these were the ones first hit. But the scope of this problem is everywhere and is spreading. Robotics and AI will further accelerate it.

Back in the 70s the woman who raised me got a full time job as a computer programmer. She had no prior experience at all, she trained on the job and did courses in her spare time. Now fast forward to the present day and my daughter is following in her footsteps, doing computer science at university. Its three years full time study but many of the students that are going to come out, degree in hand, will never be employed in the field. Why? Because companies are global now and move labour intensive jobs to cheaper locations, including coding. If they are not big enough to do that they can hire overseas companies to write code for them. If they are even smaller they can get cheaper programmers from other countries to come in on work visas.

Which is why the middle class has been stagnant or contracting for decades, even when economies boom, because the benefits of these booms are being realised by fewer and fewer people.

YonicProbe · 10/11/2016 12:28

Oh, that's good.

So why are you using his recognised overreaction to berate feminists on MN?

Overeraction was bad phrasing.

Please replace mentally with completely unacceptable reaction .

Lorelei76 · 10/11/2016 12:30

Pizan " when I complained the second I used the word sexist I was called a feminazi and told I was extreme. Thats how people respond to sexism these days because of over use of the term when there is clearly no sexism,"

so you claimed sexism when there was none?

your posts make no sense - are you on glue?!

Pizanfan · 10/11/2016 12:39

Buffy

Your self awareness or lack of is staggering...

You are convinced that Trump is X.Y,Z, based on what you have seen and heard, women and hispanic voters don't believe he is X,Y,Z based on what they have seen and heard. You hold one viewpoint, character. They might hold numerous viewpoints, like manifestos, issues, and comparison to Clinton.

So a vote for Trump isn't always racist, sexist etc, it's a vote for a candidate who offers values that coincide with the individuals, collectivism and collective thinking isn't smart, it's what bullys do. They enforce their beleifs based on a group consencus on weaker people.

If you dislike Trump like I do thats great, attacking 20 odd million people is not ok though, and thats why I argue. I'm not here defending Trump, i'm here defending humanity and compassion.

Pizanfan · 10/11/2016 12:42

Lorelei

My case was clear sexism, and I will win. The reaction by very nice sane people was to laugh at the feminazi because I mentioned sexism, which is over used and has become a laughable term.

When sexism occurs you HAVE to call it out, but it has to be sexism! Clinton getting beat isn't sexism. Calling 700 million people 'all white men' or mocking 3.8 billion people 'women can't' is clearly sexist (depending on context obviously)

White men are the most privileged people in the world.

As a class, yes. This doesn't help you much if you are a white man born into poverty with little access to education or work.

As a white, middle class women I think I have enjoyed greater privilege in most aspects of my life (not all though) than many white men. Better access to education, greater agency (I think I am using the term correctly), and all that flows from that. Class plays a huge role in privilege in the UK. Maybe less in the States but I bet it's still there.

YonicProbe · 10/11/2016 12:43

"very nice sane people was to laugh at the feminazi"

They aren't very nice if they used that phrase.

HTH.

Pizanfan · 10/11/2016 12:51

Buffy

From ignorant people who call racism, sexism etc when it is an easy out of an argument instead of actually discussing issues! I have been called troll 3 times already, because my view differs slightly from some peoples, that is an ignorant and lazy way of saying 'I don't want to talk to you sensibly, because I don't have validity in my point of view, and am scared to learn' (unless someone is clearly being a troll).

In my case, after I was called feminazi (yes by a very nice girl, who you don't get to call not nice because you don't know her, or the situation, thats an ignorant comment) I explained the situation in detail (after calling her a dumb bitch granted lol), and we had an exchange of ideas, and infact she was the one who came up with the strategy implimented.

My point is, calling air conditioning sexist, making youtube videos screaming sexual assault because someone won't tell you their name etc is harmfull to the feminist movement I work hard for!

RiverTam · 10/11/2016 12:52

Well, I'm talking about them as a class.

I don't think the Latinos, the women and the very small number of black voters who voted for Trump didn't see the sexism, racism etc. They simply decided that it didn't matter. Doesn't mean it wasn't there for all to see. And as someone on MN said on another thread, other cultures that vote for Trump can be very sexist, homophobic etc.

Michelle Obama said that cultures and countries that treat women as the equals of men are better than those that don't. I agree with her. Has America just proved itself to be one of those countries that doesn't?

Pizanfan · 10/11/2016 12:54

River

Ok lets assume you are 100% right, and i'll take this as a chance to learn.

Which countries treat women as equals?

RiverTam · 10/11/2016 12:55

In law? Quite a few.

Pizanfan · 10/11/2016 12:56

Including the US?

Pizanfan · 10/11/2016 12:57

I'm trying to frame the discussion, not catch you out btw.
