Transwoman using women's loos at work

CharlieSierra · 16/09/2016 20:20

I've posted a bit about this over the past few days on the MN response to Spartacus thread in site stuff, but someone suggested I start a new thread about it here.

Earlier this week I was surprised to encounter an apparently male person in the women's loos at work. I understand from a colleague that they have just started the transitioning process, and it appears from all the research I have done that there is no way to avoid them invading our space. It would be discriminatory to prevent them.
We also have showers, presumably the same applies. I plan to take it up with HR, since none of the women in the building were told this could happen, but I haven't managed to speak to anyone about it yet.
I feel angry, powerless, silenced. It's obvious using the next cubicle that they use the toilet as a man would. We will have to adapt our behaviour, hide any discomfort so as not to make them feel uncomfortable. There are unisex accessible loos on every floor, but no, they want to be in ours. Sad

"there are plenty of other countries that don't tolerate trans people."

I think what you mean is that there are plenty of countries that don't tolerate homosexuality and actively encourage (read: will execute or imprison those who don't transition) gay people to transition.
Like Iran.
Funnily enough, countries with appalling human rights abuses and inequalities towards women actively encourage men to transition to women rather than be gay.

It takes a certain type of hatred towards other women to tell them to shut up, sit down, and deal with it.

It's absolutely shocking how many handmaidens the TAs have managed to recruit. Women who regard themselves as feminists, who are outraged by the science museum's revolting sexist brain sex quiz, go out of their way to abuse and silence other women who don't toe the line on "TW are women"

CharlieSierra · 17/09/2016 15:09

I'm sure there were a lot of white folks who felt uncomfortable when black people started getting on whites only spaces in apartheid SA

What. The. Actual. Fuck. Are you actually this fucking ignorant????

IBelieveTheEarthIsFlat · 17/09/2016 15:11

I agree Hermione. Why don't we matter? Why are other women so happy to see other women scared and anxious and afraid to live their lives. Are we to have nowhere safe to go? Will we have to have panic alarms in the gym changing rooms like there is at my local train station?

I am scared. And angry as hell

IzzyIsBusy · 17/09/2016 15:12

Yes Charlie zippy is indeed that ignorant.

natwebb79 · 17/09/2016 15:13

"I don't want penises in female spaces". Jesus! Grin

WinchesterWoman · 17/09/2016 15:13

womenslivesmatter

is that too much appropriation? is there already a hashtag?

WinchesterWoman · 17/09/2016 15:13

natwebb what's yer beef

IzzyIsBusy · 17/09/2016 15:15

I would not want Jesus there either.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 17/09/2016 15:17

Lorelei - I know ya didn't Smile

Violence against women and girls is increasing, women and girls are 52% of the population, surely that means our safety must be considered? Nope, obviously not, we're just being silly, hysterical and mean.

natwebb79 · 17/09/2016 15:17

Oh come on, can't you see how ridiculous that sounds? ...slowly walks out of this forum as it's giving me the giggles and there are lots of VERY angry people...

WinchesterWoman · 17/09/2016 15:19

god - quickest flounce ever
do you want penises in female spaces then? because that's what sounds ridiculous to me
it wouldn't really be a you know female space any more would it

natwebb79 · 17/09/2016 15:19

Do you have the stats on how many of those attacks are carried out by trans women using a private cubicle in the ladies loo? Don't you think they're probably having a shit enough time of it being born in the wrong body without the vitriol spouted on this thread?

IBelieveTheEarthIsFlat · 17/09/2016 15:20

Your point please?

IzzyIsBusy · 17/09/2016 15:21

Natwebb you are an idiot. I feel sorry for you and all who have to spend time with you.

MatildaOfTuscany · 17/09/2016 15:22

Ridiculous as in why would anyone be so transphobic? Or ridiculous as in self evidently no one would want a penis in a female space?

WinchesterWoman · 17/09/2016 15:22

sigh - 'born in the wrong body' is transphobic - just so you know

yes - there's information on how many women are attacked by men dressed as women in bathrooms and other areas

I don't have the link to hand but I can try to find it if you want
(do you actually want to know or was it a rhetorical question?)

Lorelei76 · 17/09/2016 15:25

Nat, I keep saying this and I'll keep saying it
It's not about being trans
It's about having a penis
I accept this makes me anti male in a way
I don't accept this makes me anti trans
If more men were actually having surgery to become women, I'd have no issue
It's the "biological sex is in your brain" that i object to

CharlieSierra · 17/09/2016 15:26

Don't you think they're probably having a shit enough time of it being born in the wrong body without the vitriol spouted on this thread

How can you be born in the wrong body? You're born in your own body, it's your body. I have no idea how anyone could think otherwise.

natwebb79 · 17/09/2016 15:26

I should imagine their penis (which they would give anything not to have) would be concealed in their clothes until they have a piss in their locked cubicle and then covered again by their clothes before they presented themselves in public. I can't bring myself to get too riled by the idea no. Don't ever move to France - when I lived there in my local bar you had to walk past the urinals to get to the ladies. That place was never short of a penis!

Lorelei76 · 17/09/2016 15:27

Also Nat, if trans is in the brain, how would we know if trans women had attacked women?

WinchesterWoman · 17/09/2016 15:27

lol it's so funny nat!

except it really isn't

Beachcomber · 17/09/2016 15:27

Thanks Hermione. I agree with your posts too.

natwebb79 · 17/09/2016 15:28

Then I assume you aren't close to anybody who is trans Charlie? Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

WinchesterWoman · 17/09/2016 15:30

natwebb it's an actual impossible thing - it's not really something anyone can have an opinion on. it's like two and two making five. You can't agree to disagree on that.
