This lovely person was elected to represent LGBT students. What a stunning and brave example they present.

Apparently, he's resigned.

LineyReborn · 23/08/2016 19:03

Is there a statement?

RoughMagic · 23/08/2016 19:13

Resignation detailed here.

QueenLaBeefah · 23/08/2016 19:18

That's very encouraging that Ada resigned because the university had received so many complaints. Seems we are not powerless after all.

ocelot41 · 23/08/2016 19:18

They sound deeply confused and in need if TLC and a good, gender-aware counsellor. Not to be in a position of power and influence

Knackered46 · 23/08/2016 19:45

He sounds quite thick tbh...

OlennasWimple · 23/08/2016 21:24

The irony of complaining about receiving abuse and death threats after meting out abuse and wishing police officers would die seems to be lost on Ada.

I agree ocelot, so decent counselling and time away from social media and powers of position seems to be in order now

Italiangreyhound · 23/08/2016 23:06

It sounds like this person, Ada, is very mixed up. Perhaps people who are showing signs of mental illness and antisocial behaviour on this scale should be picked up on this and helped sooner.

Ada sounds like a nightmare but the university should not have let him continue so long. I wonder if it was just the fear of getting the 'trans phobic' label that allowed him to stay so long.

SpecialAgentFreyPie · 24/08/2016 07:46

It feels like a very hollow victory when they clearly only got rid of him because of the police comments, none of the rapisty comments OR sexual harassment OR individual online bullying OR anti-semitism OR homophobia.

I guess i don't view this as a step forward for the uni, because it seems to me they only did it because the public backlash would be even worse than being labelled transphobic. They did it because they were forced to, not because they care.

I'm nt surprised at all Ada doesn't see the irony in the threats. Men like this view themselves as victims of evil wimminz. Look at that MRA nutcase in America who went on a shooting rampage, but made sure to carefully document beforehand that it was 'all their fault.' He was going on a murder spree and still saw himself as the victim.

A huge sense of entitlement coupled with the power to silence women with the word transphobia makes Ada a very dangerous individual, IMO.

Mjingaxx · 24/08/2016 07:50

I think it's important that the university make a statement over this. As it stands he resigned because HE was the victim

No way I would let my daughters go to Edinburgh University, if this is the environment they think is acceptable to create for women. And as a female STEM professional, I will warn any young female prospective students about the culture that the university support

Mjingaxx · 24/08/2016 07:51

I also think this should be moved out of the feminist section, into 'chat' so more people are aware

whattheseithakasmean · 24/08/2016 08:14

In fairness to the University, it was clear he was given an option to resign rather than be publically dismissed. The University has a duty of care to all its students and this is clearly a troubled young person, who states they had attempted suicide in the past. I think the University was between a rock and a hard place and did its best in difficult circumstances. Bear in mind, the Union will be separate to the University and largely left to self regulate, so the University cannot just wade in all the time or it would be seen by the students as draconian and heavy handed.

Felascloak · 24/08/2016 08:39

If it goes into chat it will be deleted after 90 days. Someone could start a thread in "in the news"

Mjingaxx · 24/08/2016 08:41

The university also have a duty of care to female students. Which they have failed

whattheseithakasmean · 24/08/2016 08:43

Well, in fairness the offending person has resigned, so that isn't really a failure - it seems like the best that could reasonably be achieved in the circumstance.

Mjingaxx · 24/08/2016 08:57

I have started a thread in chat. In writing it, I realised what the problem is. In the resignation statement, Ada did not take any responsibility for what they have said, for the hostile environment they created. There was no apology

The university have not distanced themselves from Ada's views, nor apologised for the distress caused to other students because this person was allowed to hold a representative position
So, there is no 'fairness' at all. I totally disagree with you

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 24/08/2016 08:58

The university has had months to act on the misogyny, but chose not to bother. Judging by his posts on Twitter he has been on their disciplinary radar for a good while, and yet they allowed him to carry on because abuse and threats against women and lesbians aren't worth bothering about apparently.

SpecialAgentFreyPie · 24/08/2016 08:58

I was thinking that too Mjinga

They didn't give a shit about their female, lesbian, or Jewish students. Even firing the prick has been All About Him.

I'll be telling all and sundry about this. Well, I already brought it up at a lunch yesterday and put it on FB but I think everyone should know, especially if they have DDs. I wouldn't want to send my DD to that uni!

FreshwaterSelkie · 24/08/2016 10:33

Yeah, I agree, the resignation allowed Ada to dictate the terms, which allowed Ada to take no responsibilty whatsoever for the hurt and harm that they've caused.

I don't want to appear heartless, but the suicide attempt is irrelevant to Ada being pulled up on the abuse that Ada has dished out. It's the hallmark of an abuser, when confronted with their wrongdoing, to turn things around to make them the abused one, and suicide threats are often deployed to this end. I'm sorry that Ada is so disturbed, but that doesn't give them free rein to run round threatening violence to other people and expecting not to be challenged on it. They need to take accountability for their shitty behaviour and none of that resignation speech did any such thing.

It allowed Ada and the powers that be at the uni to save face, and said absolutely nothing about how Edinburgh will protect its female students in the future. Not really good enough, tbh.

HermioneWeasley · 24/08/2016 13:38

The university and the Union should have sacked him. Allowing Ada to continue with their platform is wholly unacceptable and they should be ashamed

Sometimes you have to stand up for what's right and be seen to do so

Also, in response to fry's question about who the loonier element do actually want to have sex with, it seems to me they want to rape lesbians. There's an extremely dark thread among some trams women about sexual access to lesbians' bodies. You've seen it with Ada calling for lesbians who won't have sex with TW with penises to be expelled for transphobia. Google "cotton ceiling"

SpecialAgentFreyPie · 24/08/2016 13:52

Is it the rape aspect? Or the lesbian aspect? Sadly, I'm sure there are confused lesbians out there who've fallen for this crap. Do you think the attraction wouldn't be there if the woman is willing?
I looked up Cotton Ceiling yesterday. I actually shivered with disgust.

HermioneWeasley · 24/08/2016 13:56

I think for some sex with lesbians is the ultimate validation of their "womanhood" and they are willing to bully and coerce to get it

noeffingidea · 24/08/2016 19:08

specialagent they are straight men with a fetish, ie autogynephilia.
If you don't allow yourself to think of them as women in any way it all becomes clearer.

LineyReborn · 24/08/2016 19:32

I think SpecialAgent has been banned, possibly for alleged 'misgendering' on the related Chat thread. Confused
