"Complicated gender identities" = men pretending they really think they're women
"Unpleasantness" = women pointing out that the above is a load of old bollocks

VincentVanLowe · 25/02/2016 17:37

You're right shortcut, that wasn't ladylike at all. How very dare you, get back in your kitchen!

ShortcutButton · 25/02/2016 17:57

There seems to be a thirst in the youngsters, for bringing down really revolutionary passionate people doesn't there, in a quest to prove just how revolutionary and ground breaking they are themselves. I give you Germaine Greer and Peter Tatchell as examples. I can't as yet, quite articulate my distaste. Its normal for the upcoming generation to feel that they are very original and all isn't it. And it isn't until you get older you realise every generation is like that. But there is so much malice, self interest and navel gazing with these guys. Are they all philosophy students??? They sure talk a lot of shit

Hopefully given a few years, they will get over themselves. We can only hope for minimal/reversible damage, in the mean time

BeyondBootcampsAgain · 25/02/2016 18:05

But i wasnt even unpleasant, i wished her luck! If she chose to read what i said as transphobic, that says more about her than me.

Trying to think how to word a letter to the nus to complain. I dont know where to begin and doubt it will be of any use anyway

Its clear that this Sarah person is just working up some drama, deleting lists then saying how trans phobic and bigoted they are; hamming up a persecution complex

Its laughable; middle class, over privileged white-boys in fulltime education in the uk gurning on about oppression. They must really feel like they are missing out on some persecution. Trying to appropriate everything in sight. Except black. They know they won't get away with that Grin

ShortcutButton · 25/02/2016 18:23

Hear hear grimble

They are going to get pulled out from up their own arseholes sharp, when they finish university and enter the real world

BeyondBootcampsAgain · 25/02/2016 18:24

"over privileged white-boys in fulltime education in the uk gurning on about oppression"

I felt this was worth saying again.

"pls gtfo of my life"

Nice.

Are these REALLY the only candidates??

Not that I give a shit, who cares what the NUS have to say? But these kids are in for a massive wake up call once they enter the real world of work and the patriarchy.

They're just children playing at it really, aren't they? The above quote just says it all. When I was on the debate team in PRIMARY school I knew that it was neither mature or productive to rant and swear in text speak to people with differing views.

It's laughable really.

OhShutUpThomas · 25/02/2016 18:30

Just to reiterate: I really don't care who 'wins.' I've never heard of the NUS women's officer before so they can't have much clout.

And if Lee gets in it would probably be quite good for feminism - give them enough rope and all that.

HermioneWeasley · 25/02/2016 18:33

Join the FB group if you would like the freedom to call men "he". No deleting there!

ShortcutButton · 25/02/2016 18:34

I wouldn't care Thomas, except I have daughters

They arent uni aged yet, and they wouldn't buy into this clap-trap; but I'd rather they weren't dealing with a system where men represent women, when they get there

PenguinVox · 25/02/2016 18:43

Yes the "pls gtfo of my life," followed by a "Goodbye" at the end, is such a childish and ridiculous response I was wondering why I even care about any of this because it's just like children playing at politics. But then I think about my daughters growing up with this and being gaslighted and I get worried again.

ShortcutButton · 25/02/2016 18:51

It is a bit perplexing though that there aren't any other, more feminist candidates though Confused

My 10 year old and most of her friends, have a better understanding than these jokers

ShortcutButton · 25/02/2016 19:00

Hareems stance, means that there is absolutely no space at all for gender critical feminists in the NUS doesn't it???

Wow. That's pretty monumental

Ashamed of my age group right now. We all seem to be so desperate to be seen as "right on" and "progressive" in every single area EXCEPT for where it benefits women. And then girls my age are saying "I don't need feminism because I'm strong", "I don't need feminism because I prefer men to women anyway". No, you don't think you need feminism because you've been conditioned to see being inferior to men as the natural position for women, and therefore you won't challenge it.

And that's exactly why you DO need feminism.

BathtimeFunkster · 25/02/2016 19:20

A student politician of any ability would see the opportunity this presented and grabbed it.

Hareem seems to think Anna deserves to win more because of how extra oppressed she is.

She has already moved over.

Thanks Hareem, from women everywhere Hmm

MrsJamin · 25/02/2016 19:31

Trying to find out what student feminist groups have actually done. Newcastle University feminist Society ran a 'Period day' in which they educated people "how to avoid being cisnormative when talking about periods. 'Cisnormativity’ is the assumption that everybody has the same gender as the sex they were assigned at birth. The workshops taught those who attended to discuss periods using the term ‘people’, or ‘they’, as opposed to ‘she’ or ‘her’ because it excludes transgender and non-binary people."

This generation of feminists are doomed! So they did a week about menstruation when they couldnt say women or she or her? Shock

RomComPhooey · 25/02/2016 19:32

That Facebook group on one of Posie's earlier links to a Federalist article, which I'm assuming is a right wing Republican site. It's a bit bonkers in places (hates gay marriage) but quite on point in others. I thought this bit was interesting about shutting down debate:

Disturbing. Shocking. Outrageous. Vile. Really? These are the smears of political correctness, which are intended to modify your language, behavior, and thoughts. This is exactly how gas lighters operate on their victims. Without suppressing dissent, the entire transgender project would die in its tracks, just like any other cult project. The LGBT lobby knows this.

Instead, it can only operate within a Stalinist-style framework. It’s totally about agitprop. Marshall Kirk and Hunter Madsen laid out the whole strategy for the LGBT agenda in their 1989 book “After the Ball.” They prescribed a hardcore propaganda and marketing campaign that utilized depth psychology. It’s classic thought reform, which can be applied to get people to believe anything, no matter how implausible.

Their prescription was to first de-sensitize the public. Then to “jam” or suppress every word of dissent. Finally, everyone must convert. This cultivates a conditioned population. Once we are conditioned in this manner, we end up accepting agendas and programs that we’d at least question if our society respected clear and free thinking. Instead, people either self-censor or conform to the party line out of hope for social acceptance.

Federalist article

murasaki · 25/02/2016 19:35

I'm wondering if Hareem is a puppet candidate. Designed so there is an opponent, but not to question that opponent's right to stand, so that Anna wins easily, as there is no vocal opposition, while being, technically, an opposing candidate.

Conspiracy theory maybe, but it just occurred to me.

PrettyBrightFireflies · 25/02/2016 19:38

hermione It's hard to tell, isn't it? But in my experience, predatory & unpleasant are not mutually exclusive from vulnerable.
Was she confident about her sexuality, or has she defined herself that way because that's what she has been told she is over the last few weeks by her new trans-woman friends?

Personally I don't think she's confident about anything - she appears to be worried about 'getting it right' and I have to wonder whose definition of right and wrong she is trying to comply with.

Of course, it could all be an act ?!?
