Can we have a general Trans thread?

Sorry for another trans thread and I feel this is a bit of an imposition given I don't post really.

Anyway reading FWR over the past few months has re-radicalised me. I've been reading lots here and wider.

Anyway just now been watching TV and there's been some stuff that's given me the rage but didn't seem to fit in existing threads or it's own thread.

Anyway thing that gave me the rage.
On BBC3 program on transgemder teen's the doctor just said "creating a vagina". Are doctors redefining vagina as pocket rather than a passage? Makes me want to screem.

Also Sarah Ditum being no platformed.

I think the fact that intersex babies are raped with dildos so that men can fuck them later on is horrible, and may be a feminist issue, as it is closely interwoven with rape culture.

But intersex has nothing to do with "brain sex" or "identity". In fact, I recently read an article about a woman who found out at age 23 that she had internal testicles instead of ovaries. She had always identified as the sex she looked like, which was female. Chances are she had no gender-feelz whatsoever and just went with what looked the most probable.

She was pressured to have the testicles removed and go on artificial estrogen. Because "Testicles don't belong in your female body", as the doctor was quoted. There was no medical reason whatsoever - the lack of testosterone necessitated artificial hormones.

That's caused by gender. There are only two gender boxes, so intersex individuals have to fit into one of them. Creating a new box for intersex individuals might solve that problem, but abolishing gender altogether would, too.

VestalVirgin · 23/12/2015 17:27

@slugs: They used to chop off bits - apparently it is not legal anymore. In the article I mentioned above the person was thought to be female until they noticed that she had internal testicles - upon which the testicles were chopped off. She's now fourty or so, so it's hopefully not done anymore, but I am not too optimistic, now that the translobby has made the chopping off of healthy body parts acceptable.

I'll just leave this here

Can we have a general Trans thread?
HermioneWeasley · 23/12/2015 19:15

vind it's true, but the way things are now it's just the blue mixed with pink, there's no 3rd space for born women - just men in our prisons, changing rooms, DV shelters etc - no space that is just for women any more.

BeyondJinglebells · 23/12/2015 19:30

Vestal, if thats the same woman i read about recently (though cant remember where), she was diagnosed with a possible rare (as she was v young) ovarian cancer and it was only cause of that they discovered her 'ovaries' were undescended testes. I'll see if i can find the link...

VestalVirgin · 23/12/2015 19:57

@Beyond: I don't think it's the same one, the case I read about had her getting ultrasound in puberty when her menstruation didn't start, and the doctor said her ovaries were not normal, but didn't give them cause to worry. (She seems to believe he lied on purpose to enable her to continue a normal life)

When she was 23, she got another ultrasound for reasons I don't remember right now, and then they told her.

The fact that you read about another such case hints that many intersex individuals aren't really noticed to be intersex. So the number could be as high as one in thousand, but it wouldn't be really relevant.

I have no problem with people with androgen insensitivity and phenotypically female bodies who have been raised as female in women's spaces, I have a problem with men in women's spaces.

(The abovementioned individual is also clearly "afab", assigned female at birth. Important difference to transgender.)

7Days · 23/12/2015 20:29

God I hate the word 'assigned' it's such a sleight of hand.

HermioneWeasley · 23/12/2015 20:45

Agree 7days all these subtle tweaks to language add up to a big problem. You're not "assigned" male or female to birth any more than you're "assigned" human or "assigned" bipedal.

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/12/2015 20:47

Are intersex people pissed off about being used as a debate point in the trans movement?

HermioneWeasley · 23/12/2015 20:50

MrsTP I understand so

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/12/2015 20:53

It's like the way that people magically start caring about women's rights when they are talking about Islam and couldn't give a shite normally. Intersex people are suddenly important as long as they are tied to trans people. Sad

VestalVirgin · 23/12/2015 21:16

MrsPterry, yes, that's probably the reason why many intersex people are pissed off about being used by the trans movement.

I am certainly very pissed off about being used by racist males as argument why refugees shouldn't be allowed into the country.

BeyondJinglebells · 24/12/2015 07:53

It is my 30th AFAB anniversary today!

I'm not sure if this is relevant in this thread, but there are rumours that Caitlyn Jenner wants to 'detransition' back to being Bruce again. Apparently being a woman isn't all it's cracked up to be. If this is the case then it's lucky that they retained their male genitals.
It does make me wonder if Bruce/Caitlyn is actually a transvestite, something they could have been in a safer way without the hormones and surgery. Also, how many others are unhappy and want to detransition?

VestalVirgin · 24/12/2015 14:02

What? Jenner wants to detransition NOW? After collecting all the goodies? Well, figures. I wouldn't be too surprised. Never took him seriously in the first place.

Jenner is clearly an autogynephile, being a transvestite would suit him way better than pretending to be a woman.

There are lots of de-transitioners. However, most of those are lesbians (or ex-lesbians ...) and gays, people who were lured into this when they were still young and impressionable.

Jenner made a fully-informed decision, as an adult. You would have thought he'd know what he was getting himself into.

How trustworthy is the source of those rumours?

noeffingidea · 24/12/2015 14:29

It's from a gossip site, so maybe, maybe not. To be fair, Jenner had started the process of transitioning before he met Kris. He put it on hold to marry and have children with her.
They're a strange family though. Who knows what is real and what isn't when it comes to the Kardashians.

howtorebuild · 24/12/2015 14:47

Do you have a link about Caitlyn?

This thread started on AIBU but is now I Relationships. It's very sad. I hesitate to say this is "real life" and Jenner's life isn't, but it's certainly a reality which is not discussed in Jenner's world.
