Can we have a general Trans thread?

Sorry for another trans thread and I feel this is a bit of an imposition given I don't post really.

Anyway reading FWR over the past few months has re-radicalised me. I've been reading lots here and wider.

Anyway just now been watching TV and there's been some stuff that's given me the rage but didn't seem to fit in existing threads or it's own thread.

Anyway thing that gave me the rage.
On BBC3 program on transgemder teen's the doctor just said "creating a vagina". Are doctors redefining vagina as pocket rather than a passage? Makes me want to screem.

Also Sarah Ditum being no platformed.

Came across video earlier...

First thought was - they missed the bit with excruciating pain, vomiting, dizziness and being fobbed of by doctors saying it's all normal... (endo sufferer here!) Oh and the impact that has on work, and having to pretend nothing is wrong, which doesnt work when you're unable to stand up without shaking.

Then I thought, how desperately sad it is that people want so badly to have something they will never have. I remember a friend in school who started her period really late, and was very upset about it, feeling like not a proper woman (otoh I was quite young when I started and actually said "the curse is upon me! I am no longer free!").

Anyway, it just seems awful that people are being ... set up to fail, in this way. Falling short of the mark - do they pass? Are they really women/men? Where they will always fall short (in this case by not having periods). Rather than being their true self, happy in their skin. Which ironically is actually what 'transitioning' is supposed to help with...

I hope that makes sense. Thoughts welcome Smile

Also person who called me transphobic this week has now posted on fb about a transperson's murder, with the caption "transphobia kills". Yes. So that's transphobia (sorry, just needed to get that out as obvs the post was not the place).

elementofsurprise · 14/12/2015 02:38

ps. oops - vid is about how to simulate a period

Rachel dolezal new interview. Really interesting in terms of considering what transitioning and self identifying means.

Yeah - I find it deeply insulting to women to fethishize something that is, at best, a constant nuisance throughout our reproductive years, and at worst excruciatingly painful.

Who is it for? Nobody will see the pad or mooncup so what is it about? Self delusion?

Should I comment on the video and recommend iron tablets? I find they work wonders if you are in need of bad cramping. Technically, it is the stomach that hurts, but I am sure they wouldn't be able to tell the difference! Grin

VestalVirgin · 14/12/2015 09:55

Oh, they turned off the comments. Of course they did.

Okay, if one of you sees such a thing in the future, with open comments section, please give them this advice: Iron tablets from the pharmacy (high dose), with green or black tea drunk immediately afterwards - work wonders for giving you an authentic menstruation experience!

Gosh, are we doing acknowledging mental illness within some trans people now? Thank god for that!

A family member's gestator came out as a transman recently. And it is quite clear to everyone that this individual is very troubled, diagnosed bipolar, and desperately trying to run away from their own head. This person freely admitted to my family member's father that identifying as a man is a new thing, not a lifelong feeling: it was a choice. This person is taking testosterone off the internet and waiting for an initial appointment at a gender identity clinic. This person is going to have a nasty shock upon realising that no matter how far one runs, one cannot escape one's own head. But according to the prevalent narrative this person is and always was a man. It's just bullshit, and it's not helping this individual at all to pander to it. And we're not allowed to say so.

SlaggyIsland · 14/12/2015 12:34

I saw something today on fb that disturbed me. A friend liked someone's post, they'd shared an article in (possibly US) Cosmo about three MTFs who work in the porn industry, and were saying how wonderful it was.
There was then a general discussion about how great it was for women in general to work in the sex industry, someone had a friend who did and she was "so happy for her", it was the nadir of liberal feminism going on right there.
I quietly despaired. I knew that their so-very-tolerant attitudes would vanish in a heart-beat if I expressed any dissent but I thought, feminism was for this?

elementofsurprise · 15/12/2015 00:50

Thanks for the link Obsidian.

What struck me was that Rachel Dolezal spent time championing the rights of black people. Whereas so many trans"women" seem to champion the cause of themselves, not women.

In a way I've got more sympathy with the "trans-racial" line of thought... I mean, someone could be brought up white (for eg.) in a black family/community, and so identify strongly as "culturally black" (as it were). Although they would have a different experience to others in their community when it came to mixing with white people.

In the same way, someone brought up as the opposite gender to their sex (or eg. one of the rare cases where someone is biologically more male than female but appears female at birth) would have a claim on that gender identity/experience that (almost all) transgender people just don't have. It wouldn't make them biologically female but gender-wise...hmm.

Ideally neither racial nor gender identity should be a thing though. And then noe of it would matter. Sigh.

Oh and another disturbing element of that "fake period" video is that the girl is so young, yet so indoctrinated...

Yes ... people say she's worse than transwomen because she lied, but ... her lie required her to actually doing something for black people. The lie would have been revealed if she had demanded access to scholarships for black people for "transblack" people.

On the other hand, transwomen want completely different things than women, because they have different biologies and never really experienced life as a woman, so a transwoman who passes could still be anti-choice, anti healthcare for women, etc., without it affecting themselves.

And since most of them don't try to deceive people about their actual sex, they can demand access to women's spaces for transwomen, something they wouldn't be able to do if they pretended to be actual women.

The exhusband of Katie Price, formally known as Alex Reid seems to have come out as a transwomen. www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-3360801/Alex-Reid-poses-female-alter-ego-copies-Caitlyn-Jenner-s-iconic-magazine-shoot-reveals-identifies-trans.html

'Why not be trans?' This is the level of meaninglessness that the label has now, not only disrespectful to women but to those unhappy individuals actually suffering from dysphoria.

^^This times about a million.

Trans now has no meaning outside special snowflakery and that is a hideous state of affairs for those with actual dysphoria. It could also potentially mean that those people who have serious issues like that are pushed further to the back of the queue for services and help, due to some bloke who has random lady-feelz that they can't or more likely won't define.

Mide7 · 15/12/2015 18:28

I think you've got to take what Alex Reid was quoted as saying in the daily mail with a pinch of salt.

FreshwaterSelkie · 15/12/2015 20:05

It really is clickbait golddust these days, isn't it?

You know, I'm not even particularly sorry about that. It's not great news for the gender-critical trans population, because it's exposed the genderqueering house of cards for having the flimsy base that it does, but it's making more people hit peak trans about balking at "woman is whatever I say it is" and I just can't be sorry about that. If I were a gendercritical transperson right now, I'd be trying to work out how to distance myself from the autogynephiles, cross-dressers and free-floating kinksters (ie Steph-on-knee) tout suite.

The cage fighter formally known as Alex Reid, will likely be looking for a TV show following his experience during transition.

howtorebuild · 15/12/2015 21:02

her sorry.

Mide7 · 15/12/2015 21:14

There is already a trans woman MMA fighter Slug.
