Can we have a general Trans thread?

Sorry for another trans thread and I feel this is a bit of an imposition given I don't post really.

Anyway reading FWR over the past few months has re-radicalised me. I've been reading lots here and wider.

Anyway just now been watching TV and there's been some stuff that's given me the rage but didn't seem to fit in existing threads or it's own thread.

Anyway thing that gave me the rage.
On BBC3 program on transgemder teen's the doctor just said "creating a vagina". Are doctors redefining vagina as pocket rather than a passage? Makes me want to screem.

Also Sarah Ditum being no platformed.

I've decided that I'm a-gender. I don't have a gender identity so that must be right, isn't it?

noeffingidea · 11/12/2015 10:19

Regarding Stephonknee, he was expelled from one transgender group on the grounds of being too narcisstic for them. Another group has embraced him as a spokesperson, though.
Plus, there is another layer to this in America as well, to do with race. The transwomen who are actually being murdered and discriminated against are usually from ethnic minorities, especially black. Some black transwomen do not take too kindly to having their movement being represented (or hijacked) by white autogynephiles.
Not sure if that will happen over here though.

noeffingidea · 11/12/2015 10:21

Oops, accidentally identified Stephonknee as 'he'.
Oh well.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 11/12/2015 10:23

I think in his case that's appropriate
I don't recognise his identity as a 6 year old girl as valid so I refuse to share my pronoun with him
He's a middle aged male autopeadophile

ShortcutButton · 11/12/2015 10:29

HOLD ON I had assumed that stefonknee was universally regarded as a sick-fuck? And that any TG person would be wholly justified into coming on to MN and tearing a strip off us for even bringing him into the discussion.

He is the spokesperson for a TG group?????

Is that for real?

I just reached transpeak on a whole new level

abbieanders · 11/12/2015 10:37

My new identity is Derekontheboardofdirectors.

ShortcutButton · 11/12/2015 10:38

Hermione o think in calling yourself a-gender, you recognise/accept gender as 'a thing'

I scribble it out on forms and replace with 'sex'

whatdoIget · 11/12/2015 10:38

Mine is princeindependentwealth Smile

HermioneWeasley · 11/12/2015 10:41

shortcut dammit!

Just another thought on why I bought so thoroughly into trans narrative.

As a lib fem, I was constantly bombarded with the statistic that 1 in 12 trans women are murdered, which is the basis of the argument that trans people are being subjected to a genocide. It was only after doing a bit critical research that I realised that this statistic has been thoroughly debunked. In fact, in the uk trans people are statistically less likely to be murdered than the non trans population. (I've included the breakdown above that persuaded me to ditch the trans oppression narrative).

I'd love to find a breakdown of how likely women are to be murdered by men vs how likely trans women are to be murdered. Karen Smith is doing fantastic work in starting to track femicide in the in the uk in her Counting Dead Women blog. It's harrowing reading. If the true statistics were known, I wonder which group would be proven more vulnerable...

Edeline85 · 11/12/2015 10:58

Oops, forgot the attachment!

Can we have a general Trans thread?
venusinscorpio · 11/12/2015 11:02

GoddessQueeninperpetuityoftheentireuniverse here :)

GreenTomatoJam · 11/12/2015 11:22

I think the only issue with those stats are they're using the 1% stat - is that 1% an estimate of potential, or an estimate of people actually living as trans?

And how are the murder stats determining who is trans?

Unless you're measuring both the same way, then the stats don't mean anything.

BeyondThirty · 11/12/2015 11:30

Shortcut, i've been doing that in my med/bio textbooks.
Bloody twee writers who cant write 'sex'

I have been tempted to submit them all as errata... Grin

Edeline85 · 11/12/2015 11:42

GreenTomatoJam I agree that accurate stats on the trans population is incredibly difficult, not only because no many are closeted, but also how to you accurately measure a group whose members base their inclusion on self indetification and gender feelz? But the numbers in my attachment were based on the Trans Murder Monitoring Project ^transrespect.org/en/^ which is accepted by the trans community as representing them, so if they're happy to use those numbers then it seems like a good place to start looking at the stats critically.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 11/12/2015 12:10

Tara Hudson is currently being interviewed on Jeremy Vine. Be very interesting to hear what the listeners think...

CharlieSierra · 11/12/2015 12:28

Just caught a couple of comment saying she should change her behaviour to stay out of prison. And one person says heads should roll because 'she's' pretty Hmm

noeffingidea · 11/12/2015 13:21

I think her appearance was a factor in public opinion, tbh. If she had looked like, well, Stephonknee, I don't think there would have been the same level of support.

BeyondThirty · 11/12/2015 13:28

I dont think Tara is pretty? Am i missing something? Not actively being 'bitchy' here (though it probably does look like it!), Tara just isnt attractive to me at all, nor is Tara an example of the sterotypical attractiveness i would expect to see 'blokes' i know fancy?

Tara looks like...well, i wont finish that sentence or i'll lose my post!!

noeffingidea · 11/12/2015 13:29

Edeline I've seen an analysis of murder stats for the US. Black and ethnic minority transwomen were disproportinately represented. Out of those the majority were sex workers, and the murder rates also correlated with murder rates for black men and sex workers over all. So a black trans sex worker would be at extremely high risk of being murdered. A white transwoman was actually at low risk.
Obviously murder stats are different in the states (they're much higher for a start) ,but I think this is what trans activists are claiming when they talk about transwomen being murdered.

howtorebuild · 11/12/2015 13:54

Tara looks like an standard transwomen to me. Why don't people just grow their hair, I don't get the two inch nature hair/twenty inch hair extension look.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 11/12/2015 14:09

Tara came across on the radio like a person who is not very bright, but, is fantastically entitled.

Would appear that her case for moving to a female prison rests upon her giant bust and blonde hair. No mention of her willy.

Was disappointed that JV didn't ask her about whether a person with a penis and a history of violence should be bunking in with women in jail, a high number of whom will have a history of being abused.

Would have quite liked to have heard her answer to that.

I do think that trans-women are more vulnerable in a male prison. But, so are frail men, addicted men, mentally ill men. They can't come into women's jails either.

PlonitbatPlonit · 11/12/2015 14:12

On the stats, this is quite interesting culturallyboundgender.wordpress.com/2013/04/27/one-in-twelve/

howtorebuild · 11/12/2015 14:21

I guess narcissism is a coping mechanism developed in some, to combat a low IQ/learning disability.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 11/12/2015 14:33

I thought she came across as very entitled too. Interesting that there was no mention of her job either. The Facebook comments were mostly highly critical but that doesn't surprise me too much.
