Can we have a general Trans thread?

1000 replies

Brugmansia · 04/12/2015 02:33

Sorry for another trans thread and I feel this is a bit of an imposition given I don't post really.

Anyway reading FWR over the past few months has re-radicalised me. I've been reading lots here and wider.

Anyway just now been watching TV and there's been some stuff that's given me the rage but didn't seem to fit in existing threads or it's own thread.

Anyway thing that gave me the rage.
On BBC3 program on transgemder teen's the doctor just said "creating a vagina". Are doctors redefining vagina as pocket rather than a passage? Makes me want to screem.

Also Sarah Ditum being no platformed.

Wisemother you certainly live up to your name

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 09/12/2015 20:04

SettlinginNicely that's a great article, thanks for the link. What's slate usually like on trans topics, is this a departure for them?

I do hope we might be turning a corner. A lot of people seem to have had a 'peak trans' moment recently and perhaps are now searching for a more honest and grounded discussion.

I am extremely grateful to the gender-critical trans people and the feminists who are sticking their necks out to try for a sensible conversation Flowers

The first link in the article is to this blog post, which I loved: I want women, and men to be free to be whoever they want. There is no need to think transwomen are women for this to be true.

HermioneWeasley · 09/12/2015 20:10

plentyof Slate are pretty left wing and have been very pro CJ, jazz Jennings etc so I was pleased to see this article too.

PlonitbatPlonit · 09/12/2015 20:21

HermioneWeasley That story that you posted from the BBC has an earlier chapter. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/3161209.stm

cigarsofthepharaoh · 09/12/2015 20:23

Right now, though, it feels as if [it's] becoming a bit like French, where one man in a group of no matter how many women means “elles” becomes “ils.”

^From a link on settling's link. I think that pretty much sums up the whole issue for me.

PlonitbatPlonit · 09/12/2015 20:31

According to a Guardian report, the Ministry of Justice review is going to be done by Peter Dawson, the deputy director of the Prison Reform Trust and a former deputy governor of HMP Brixton, and Dr Jay Stewart of Gendered Intelligence, plus an MoJ official (I think a civil servant, not sure). I think people are considering writing to MPs could also consider writing to the members of the review committee c/o Ministry of Justice.

I'm gearing up to do so, but I need to cut my letter down a bit - it's far too long.

HermioneWeasley · 09/12/2015 20:33

plonit that's fucking horrific

But I would have no objection if his dick was cut off without anaesthetic

venusinscorpio · 09/12/2015 20:40

There are a number of things I expect you could do to get yourself sent to prison and then be able to get gender reassignment. But "Karen" chose to rape a woman. Interesting.

I don't think we know who is on from the Ministry of Justice. They just say "senior official from the Ministry of Justice"

Dawson and Stewart will act as advisors (my mistake). I think the issue here is that the 'stakeholders' who are the female prisoners in the Women's Estate are not highlighted at all.

PlonitbatPlonit · 09/12/2015 20:55

We should be lobbying for the implementation of the Corsten Report and I hate how women in prison have been carved out. They aren't mentioned at all (except in that very vague "the wellbeing of all prisoners."). The idea that they might have anything specifically to say as women.....

And they seem pretty committed to a redesign of the current system.

VestalVirgin · 09/12/2015 20:56

Well, it is what I would have expected. For a man who likes to rape women, of course women's prison is the place where he wants to be.
After all, maybe raping women is his way of dealing with childhood sexual abuse. To deny him that outlet might make his PTSD worse! Won't someone think of the men?!

kua · 09/12/2015 21:21

Plonit Shock God, that's bloody awful.

Small derail..

I would like to thank all that have posted on the feminist pages on the subject of transgender , and were brave enough to post on chat/aibu!

It was only fairly recently that I started reading the threads on transgender/feminism issues. Until this point I really did not have a view point on transgender and to be honest neither did I care, as what the fuck did it have to do with me?!

Well, as it transpires a lot!

So, thank you to all who have opened my eyes and a big thanks to HQ for allowing this dialogue to take place.

PlaysWellWithOthers · 09/12/2015 22:26

The fact that so few of the recommendations in the Corsten Report have been implemented pretty much says everything you need to know about how the MoJ and HMPS in particular regards women. Having just recently attended a seminar given by 2 POs who run the restorative justice office here and hearing their views on female prisoners it would appear to be endemic.

VestalVirgin · 10/12/2015 00:43

Since people have been asking why there are sex segregated spaces, I thought I'd link this blog post on sex segregates spaces and their purposes:

elementofsurprise · 10/12/2015 04:29

So glad you're all here. The friend I would have considered the most feminist has been swept up by the bullshit, an has been posting on fb about how great the Tara Hudson move was.

Her main line of argument/insults to me was that I obviously have no clue what I'm talking about and am not up to date on queer theory so I must be wrong and transphobic. Apparently my views are old fashioned and a detailed knowledge of queer theory would convince me to abandon reality change my mind. I just cannot believe someone I once respected is presenting such a substanceless argument. I could weep.

Sorry, just needed to get that out.

ArcheryAnnie · 10/12/2015 09:15

Oh, element, I'm sorry. That's what I've been most afraid of - losing friends who I really like, but who have been swept up in this nonsense.

I've just lost a friend of more than a decade after gently suggesting to her that "Stefonknee" was perhaps not the person she might want to champion, and that if she's telling "TERFs" to "DIAF" for "trying to hound a vulnerable trans woman to suicide" (Stefonknee is a manipulative narcissist who has form for threatening suicide whenever anyone goes "but you aren't a six year old girl") she might want to take a step back and look again at what is happening. I am apparently totally gross and exclusionary and no feminist at all for suggesting this.

It's really upset me, but I suspect it is going to happen more and more. I don't recognise what this friend has become. She's lost all critical judgement and is just spouting stock phrases, and claiming it as "social justice".

Elendon · 10/12/2015 09:25

What I find disturbing re the rape to become a trans woman is that this person will be on the sex offenders register for the rest of their life and it will be recorded under their female name.

It gives fuel to those who always bring up the argument that women are just as prolific when it comes to sex crimes as well.

And I agree with everything ShortCutButton said above.

BeyondThirty · 10/12/2015 09:42

I have two 'big feminist' friends, one who mentions tw are women a lot and another who doesnt mention it at all. Both in their late twenties like me. Same as you though annie, i've been scared to broach the subject

IGotAPea · 10/12/2015 10:29

Just caught the start of "coming up" for This Morning and there is a couple on today who started raising thier toddler as a girl after "he convinced them that he should have been born a she"

I am curious/interested as to what understanding a toddler can have about sex and gender and be able to articulate to convince parents that they were born the wrong sex.

I have to pop out so probably won't catch it but just thought would mention it here in case anyone would want to watch.
