Raping Asian girls worse than raping white girls because it 'harms their marriage prospects' :o

Link

A judge has just ruled that a man who raped Asian under-13s should receive a longer sentence, because the victims' families were now worried about their marriage prospects. In other words, damaging these girls' property value in the marriage 'market' actually counted in terms of assessing the damage done by raping them.

I think this is horrific. Not just because virginity should have no bearing on the value of a girl or woman, but also because implicitly it seems to support the notion that underlay the belief of the Rotherham rapists that white girls were 'trash' who could be abused freely because they were already devalued. Like it's OK to rape white girls because they have no trading value.

I get that feminism coexists quite uneasily with cultural diversity, and this is a very difficult area to navigate, but really feel like this needs a feminist response.

I couldn't believe what I was reading yesterday.

It's saying white girls don't matter as much therefore any man who wants to rape should choose a white child because you won't get as much of a sentence.

I cannot believe this sort of thing is happening in a British court.

OP the last version is spot on- really encapsulates all the key points. Please let us know when ready I will more than happy to share on FB and twitter hopefully we can get this going viral quickly :)

The only problem I have with it now is this bit:
"We call for this racist judgement to be revoked"

Don't really want it fully revoked, do we? What would that actually mean, would he have to be re-sentenced, or just have it reduced to the more usual sentence?

Just have the judgement edited to reflect the fact that ANY rape is equally bad, regardless of race or culture.

Actually I'd like to see all other rapists have their sentence increased to match his, rather than have his reduced...

OTheHugeManatee · 18/09/2015 15:50

Hmm good point about 'revoked', Thumb. Will have a think.

What about

"We call for racial and cultural stereotyping to have no place in criminal law, and for all women to be equal in the eyes of the law when determining the harm inflicted and sentencing appropriate to rape and sexual assault."

Rape is rape and obviously it's an awful hate crime.

When sentencing happens with other cases and I expect rape cases to the judge takes into account how the victims life has been effected.

If a white woman gets raped the general consensus is that her family will support her and future boyfriends will be sympathetic and not blame her. An Asian Muslim woman isn't going to have the same support fgs and the rapist hasn't just raped her he's abolished her future to.

If you can't comprehend someone else's culture of violent oppression, fgm, being brought up to be a 'good' little virgin full of home making skills and how being 'damaged' in the eyes of her whole world what planet do you live on? Oh yes white supremacy.

This isn't a white women aren't as precious as Asian women sort of thing.

Equal doesn't mean everyone gets the same when they don't even have the same starting point.

If a short person and a tall person both couldn't see over a fence it would be stupid to give them both the same size step to see over. The tall one would be to tall and the short person still may not be able to see over. You give them both a step where they can see comfortably.

Alibabsandthe40Musketeers · 18/09/2015 17:12

BrandNew - if you have ever read any of the threads on here where women who have been raped have shared their stories, then you would quickly realise that their futures have also been abolished. What a ridiculous statement to make.

This is not about white supremacy, it is about victims being equal in the eyes of the law.

thehypocritesoaf · 18/09/2015 17:12

I will sign. Outrageous.

BrandNewAndImproved · 18/09/2015 17:13

And now there is a petition for this poor girl attackers sentence to be reduced. Wtf can you not put yourself in her shoes for once.

This is why black feminists don't get involved with white feminists. As a white person I have a white privilege but I can actually see my unfair privilege unlike some.

BrandNewAndImproved · 18/09/2015 17:15

How do you know I haven't been raped?

BrandNewAndImproved · 18/09/2015 17:16

Your all so caught up in 'its not fair I'm white and I don't get special treatment' your blind.

thehypocritesoaf · 18/09/2015 17:18

How do you know what race people are?

HelenaDove · 18/09/2015 17:25

BrandNew It might be a general consensus but you try telling that to ppl who have grown up in strict Catholic households. Catholic girls who were attacked and raped were NOT supported. Unless you call the Magdelene laundries support. The last one closed in 1996 so still well within living memory.

This is nothing to do with race and everything to do with culture. When the misogyny in the Catholic religion is called out there isnt the same attempt to shut down discussion by trying to make it about race.

I have a problem with ALL cultures that treat women like second class citazens. And i come from a Catholic family.

The Magdelene laundries have closed but the shame and blame continues for Catholic women and girls who have been assaulted.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/09/2015 17:26

As a BME non-Muslim woman, I want to point out it isn't just white victims who might be targetted. All the rest of us would be.
Rape victims deserve equality in how they are valued

However, if Muslim girls & women are subject to such shame, a heavier sentence might not have any effect, if the rapist now knows a Muslim victim is less likely than other victims to report him.

Heavier sentences just reinforce the idea that the victims are damaged goods.

Victim-blaming is unacceptable, The rapist bears 100% of the guilt & shame

HelenaDove · 18/09/2015 17:28

What Big Choc said.
