We're running at about six weeks per pub at the moment! So if you want chat with a feminist flavour, or with fellow feminists, or just want to admire our patriarchy blaster cannon and goat - welcome!

Oh FFS. My parents ward has a UKIP councillor with a majority of 9. Angry There were 9 spoiled ballot papers. Sad

BertieBotts · 08/05/2015 18:26

Oh no :(

DH is worried about the EU now. We live in Germany so we could have issues. Not that he bothered voting Hmm

Jessica2point0 · 08/05/2015 19:10

Hi all, can it come in for a (preferably white) wine please? I've had a shit day (bloody work + election) and am in serious need of a chair and a glass of something cold.

On the plus side, managed to get rid of our local MP. She kept voting against gay rights and disability rights. The new MP only won with a small majority too so I'm glad I voted. I really wanted to vote green but we didn't have a green candidate.

alexpolistigers · 08/05/2015 19:18

I am also worried about the EU referendum, as a UK citizen permanently resident in another EU country.

The electorate has shown me that they unfailingly vote against my own political beliefs and philosophy, so as a very pro-EU person, the prospect terrifies me!

Jessica I'm on red wine, happy to pour a glass!

DoctorTwo · 08/05/2015 19:57

I'm disappointed in somebody at work. She's young, middle class and earns decent money and she decided to vote Tory because of their policies aimed at 'young people' like apprenticeships and help to buy. I pointed out that apprentices get about £2.80/hr and that Gidiot's only economic plan is to keep the housing bubble inflated as long as possible to hide the fact the real economy is in the tank. Her response: "well, it suits me." Sad Angry

The truth about austerity is that it doesn't work, unless it's aimed at the rich and the major corporations. We, as taxpayers, are subsidising low wages and high rents, and we have to stop that, renationalise everything they've sold off and start again. Oh, and instead of fining those banks who rigged LIBOR etc, jail those who signed off on the deals.

HarryLimeFoxtrot · 08/05/2015 21:07

Despite the fact that the LibDems were annihilated in the parliamentary election here (their share of the vote was down by over 15%, and they lost their deposit), we still have a LibDem mayor. Both my local Labour councillors were re-elected too. Not too bad on a local level Smile

Saw this on facebook the other day, thought it was apt. www.theguardian.com/business/ng-interactive/2015/apr/29/the-austerity-delusion

BertieBotts · 08/05/2015 23:14

Hmm. Is it too much to hope, that, like with the child sex abuse scandals, individuals who have been shown to financially screw countries over will someday get their legal comeuppance? It almost seems like a similar thing - they get away with it because it's totally sanctioned (weird oxymoron word, I mean in the sense of condoned) by their peers, I don't know whether they don't stop to think of the morals of it or whether they just don't care? But people are being punished now for things which were morally wrong at the time they were doing them even though they appeared to get away with it at the time. Could it happen with this?

HarryLimeFoxtrot · 09/05/2015 14:18

I wonder how often
this sort of thing happens? I hope it is just an isolated incident.

It's like blaming immigration for all the country's problems, isn't it. Say it enough times and people believe jt

Jessica2point0 · 09/05/2015 18:45

hap, one of my close friends (a socialist) just told me that the reason Denmark has high social mobility is because they have low levels of immigration. He's normally a pretty intelligent guy, I was so gobsmacked I didn't think of a proper response quick enough.

on the 'blame immigration front, have you already have seen this.

Warning stop it the moment you get to audience applause to avoid Russell Brand!

LauraMipsum · 09/05/2015 20:54

Hello everyone, I've not been in for a while! Mine's a pint of Badger please.

There's an anti-Tory demo going on outside Downing Street at the moment - I'm not sure exactly what they plan to achieve, given that "voting for the other lot" didn't work - and some muppet has decided the best place to spray their anti-government message is on the Women of WWII memorial - a monument to women who actually DID fight against fascism, rather than dicking around chanting a bit.

There are not enough palms for my face.

LauraMipsum · 09/05/2015 20:55

NB I don't think 5 more years of the Tories is a good thing in any sort of way, and would far rather they hadn't got in. I just don't think the demo is going to have any effect at all.

YonicScrewdriver · 09/05/2015 22:57

Oh my god what is wrong with people? Wasn't five years of torture enough? I despair. I can't even think about what the future will be like for my two DSS.
Laura i kwym re demo but my only hope is that people will involve them selves in single issue politics to try and alleviate the worst excesses of another 5 years.

alexpolistigers · 10/05/2015 19:20

Hello!

I have had enough of doom and gloom on the news. So tonight I am going to bury my head in the sand, pretend it will all go away and just have a glass of wine instead.

HarryLimeFoxtrot · 10/05/2015 19:56

I quite fancy a glass of wine too. The weekend had gone all too quickly, and I have a horribly busy week at work approaching. I suppose that means I won't have time to keep up with the news - quite possibly no bad thing!

UptoapointLordCopper · 10/05/2015 20:03

I have a busy week coming up too - unfortunately the boring tasks are going to displace the interesting ones, but hey ho. It's all paying the rent.

I've had a cider and a g&t and may consider a glass of wine later while watching rubbish on telly.

LauraMipsum · 10/05/2015 20:28

waves to Yonic

Lily I'm hoping that the new Women's Equality Party will be a unifying force but from what I can see on Facebook it seems unlikely. (Among my friends so not necessarily representative but) the rad fems are complaining that it will be far too liberal and queer politics will take over, the queer fems are complaining it will be too radical and they can't possibly work with radicals, the Marxists are accusing it of being too establishment and the die-hard Labour group are flapping about it taking votes and attention from the only credible established alternative. And it hasn't even got going yet. So hmm.

Next week is my first full week back at work after being part time / maternity leave. I'm sort of looking forward to it and sort of wondering how I will cope with FT work and a baby who likes to wake up 2 - 3 times a night. DP does as much as she can but ultimately it's me who's on night duty as DD likes a BF overnight (she won't have it in the day).

ChunkyPickle · 10/05/2015 20:48

Good God Harry - the excerpts from that review read like some 'mate' got hold of the reviewers account and posted a joke review to get back at him, not a real review.

Leaves you banging your head against the wall at the people who say we've already achieved equality doesn't it!

I am wondering when I can apply for US citizenship. If Hilary Clinton becomes a candidate I would consider it just so that I can vote for her.
