We're running at about six weeks per pub at the moment! So if you want chat with a feminist flavour, or with fellow feminists, or just want to admire our patriarchy blaster cannon and goat - welcome!

This just popped up on my facebook feed. I'm flabberghasted. In terms of my internet hanging out I'm basically always here. I kind of hoped that the rest of you were exaggerating the sheer lunacy taking over the rest of the internet. You weren't, were you? They really don't actually grasp the radfem POV, do they? Excuse me, I need to go and bang my head against a wall.

drspouse · 13/06/2015 17:20

After all the shenanigans about what "girls" can and can't do in labs this week, it was really refreshing taking my Guides too an event today and hearing "what can girls do?" Anything!

SweetAndFullOfGrace · 13/06/2015 17:39

It's a bit bonkers isn't it Stormy. I do think that transactivists are of the more extreme examples of American ultra-individualism. I have decided what I want to be, with this label I have blatantly appropriated, and it is my right to self-determination to be this thing. You are a bigot if you don't agree. Get out of my way

kickassangel · 14/06/2015 02:42

just getting myself back on the thread. As you were.

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 14/06/2015 10:12

Um, only went and got the job! Aaaarrrrrgghhh!

HarryLimeFoxtrot · 14/06/2015 10:17

Well done Hoppy - that's brilliant! Flowers

MsDragons · 14/06/2015 14:49

Well done hoppy! I knew you could do it!

BriarRainbowshimmer · 14/06/2015 15:00

God, what a frustrating thread in Chat about not identifying as a feminist.
I wish I could respond to the posters and discuss and clarify things they seem to misunderstand but it isn't allowed.

YonicScrewdriver · 14/06/2015 16:00

I have come off that thread Briar because whilst I like the idea of people stating their reasons without challenge, I don't like that many of those reasons seem to be gleefully personal against FWR.

TheLily1957 · 14/06/2015 16:06

Good for you hoppy

BriarRainbowshimmer · 14/06/2015 16:30

I kind of understand the point of the thread but other than being frustrated with things that seem wrong to me, I also actually find it quite facinating how differently people can see things and it makes me want to discuss with the posters.

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 14/06/2015 19:35

Had a quick look in that thread then backed away. It's just depressing.

BriarRainbowshimmer · 14/06/2015 19:46

Yup I hid it now.
I think some of them just dislike when women say feminist things on MN in general.

thatstoast · 14/06/2015 23:32

Oh God, how do you all do it? I would love to get more involved in these threads about feminism but I just find the idea of arguing with the same people making the same points so depressing. I commented on the straw man thread earlier and come back to find it's full of straw men arguments. You all must have the patience of saints!

LassUnparalleled · 15/06/2015 00:04

Personally I think there were some valid points made in that thread. I'm not referring to particular criticism of FWR but it seems to me you might be interested to find out why there is antipathy to the idea of identifying as a feminist.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/06/2015 01:04

A lot of it seems to be down to either 'I'm all right jill' or focussing on what seem to me to be caricatures of any feminist I've ever come across. That thread was the first time I've ever seen the term PIV.

YonicScrewdriver · 15/06/2015 08:09

Yay, ASN raised £5.4k and rape crisis £3.6k!

OP posts:
YonicScrewdriver · 15/06/2015 08:11

Lass, I think it's an interesting thread but pretty hurtful in places on the basis that many of those criticisms are directed at a small group of MNers. But I'm soldiering on Smile

StormyBrid · 15/06/2015 08:25

I was a bit miffed by the suggestion on that thread that no normal person would even give the idea of PIV=rape brainspace. It's actually a very interesting springboard for a discussion on the nature of consent under patriarchy! One doesn't have to agree with the statement to understand its internal logic.

thatstoast · 15/06/2015 08:28

It's not only that thread. If you mean that I, personally, might be interested in why people have antipathy towards feminism then, yes, I am. I'm happy to read these threads but struggle to engage when the thread has kicked off and people are misrepresenting feminism and making exaggerated statements. It's possibly a problem with online discussion rather than the topic of feminism itself. I'm happy to talk about feminism in real life. People aren't so quick to describe you as a fat, hairy man hater when you're face to face. It's possible to have a more balanced discussion.
