We're running at about six weeks per pub at the moment! So if you want chat with a feminist flavour, or with fellow feminists, or just want to admire our patriarchy blaster cannon and goat - welcome!

Yes we should start a thread

I guess most women are in relationships with many men on many levels (father, partner/spouse, boss, peers etc) and have a strong stake in those men continuing to be happy as that promotes harmony, therefore boat rocking re status could be construed as making everyone's lives harder.

And also I do think that for younger women their power as pretty young things (therefore pursued and feted) can hide the more systemic aspects of patriarchal disadvantage. I only really started noticing how few women were progressing upwards in my chosen career when I was in my mid 30s, it wasn't an issue prior to that really.

And absolutely agree with the selfish point. I was like that as a teen, if I was ok I wasn't really very aware that others weren't. It took me longer to develop that compassion.

inicked - I nearly wrote something about the 'I'm all right, Jill' attitude in my last post. I got as far as being a postgrad before ever having a conversation with anyone on feminism - on a pre-www internet forum on which I think I was the only woman, and a bloke who identified as feminist dropped that phrase on my complacent self - for which I wholeheartedly thank him.

Has anyone watched Hot Girl Wanted that is currently on Netflix? It a documentary about the increasing number of young girls (mainly 18/19) and follows an "agent" and his girls, who specialises in new girls and their first shoots.

After the first few shoots they are no longer new, so lose "value" and then either have to go into more "niche" work, or go home.

It's saddening to hear one of the young girls talk about the boost of confidence she gets when men tell her they want to fuck her :(

I was shocked to learn the the amount of monthly visitors to porn sites exceeds the number of visitors to Amazon, Facebook and Netflix (I think it was those three) combined.

The whole thing is saddening really, many of the girls say they are happy and want to choose etc, but every now and then you see them looking sad, or reflecting on what they are about to do, and look terrified sometimes. I want to scoop them all up and get them out of there.

INickedAName · 02/06/2015 13:33

If anyone does watch the Netflix programme, there's some footage just after halfway through that's not easy on the stomach. It's blurred or off centre but was enough to make me vomit.

Sweet I love your idea. Sounds like my school days! I have over the years worked with young women with an 'I'm alright Jill' attitude but this years have been way better. Some even doing a 360% turn around. I was taking comfort in that until I saw those awful memes...

On the subject of feminism and young people I think a lot of issues are down to the rise in identity politics. Also a sort of neo-liberal narrative as opposed to the notion of class. Choice seems to be the ultimate goal, rather than equality.

INickedAName · 03/06/2015 12:07

Yes I noticed that too black, I had seen some of the belle Knox footage from another thread once, and the minute I heard the voice on the doc, a chill ran down my spine, the footage in the documentary made me vomit, it's worrying that anyone can find watching a teenager being chocked on a penis or objects, and being made to eat her own vomit, arousing. She said she felt like she couldn't ask to stop, or what would happen if she ask to stop, she was scared, and I think she was correct to compare it to how a rape victim might feel, as that's exactly what she'd just described.

I hope the girl who quit and went home, leads a happy life, her family love her, and her boyfriend seemed to change his whole views, I thought he was dickish at the start, but by the end he seemed to question himself and supported her. I worry about the girls who dont have a loving supportive family to go back to.

I was also worried that the number one search term in porn is "Teen" ( can't remember if that was just the U.S or worldwide) and that 40% of free online porn features abusive. I knew it was bad, but it's worse than I thought.

Grim indeed. And the frightening thing is that people (or perverts as I prefer to think of them) who do find that arousing are walking the streets. These are seriously sick individuals.

I'd be really keen on a porn thread - dodgy as that sounds. I've been thinking a lot about it lately - dodgy as that sounds too! I keep wanting to start a thread but worry it'll turn into a massive row and it'll be my responsibility, and I'm a huge coward.

INickedAName · 03/06/2015 14:19

I've started a thread in FWR, you are right black, it's heavy for the pub. shaska I thought about starting a thread yesterday but had the same concerns as you, so posted here as I felt safer. I just thought "fuck it" and started it. Kind of shitting myself in case it turns into a row though :)

StormyBrid · 04/06/2015 08:41

The Pub fell off Threads I'm On! Shock

I've been reading another trans thread and come to the conclusion that the dearth of grammar teaching in schools is to blame. I was eleven when I was taught that masculine and feminine are genders, thanks to my Y7 French teacher. Clearly people are no longer being taught this.

SweetAndFullOfGrace · 04/06/2015 09:22

I think lazy logic is to blame.

"These things are fruit. That one is an apple and this one is an orange."
"You clearly hate apples because you keep claiming that they're different from oranges".

Well no. If I have a citrus allergy then it's quite an important distinction. In some cases such as creation of a decorative fruit bowl it doesn't matter. But drawing attention to the fact that oranges are not the same as apples doesn't make me implicitly anti-orange, nor does it mean I support apple/orange segregation in every circumstance.

UptoapointLordCopper · 04/06/2015 10:57

Ah but are apples better than oranges?

SweetAndFullOfGrace · 04/06/2015 11:31

It depends on what your need is. For apple pie I would contend that oranges really aren't going to do the job.

drspouse · 04/06/2015 12:24

Slightly green mangoes make good apple pie if you can't get apples

kickassangel · 04/06/2015 13:37

And for freshly squeezed oranges, one would contend that apples wouldn't quite cut the mustard. It still wouldn't make me appleist to say so.

SweetAndFullOfGrace · 04/06/2015 14:26

Nor are you excluding the apples by saying so...
