We're running at about six weeks per pub at the moment! So if you want chat with a feminist flavour, or with fellow feminists, or just want to admire our patriarchy blaster cannon and goat - welcome!

Errol has said what I wanted to say. :)

You only need to watch one episode to know about Wendy and then you can just go and have a snooze and then ask "And so what did Wendy do?". Grin The same goes for almost all children's programmes.

DoctorTwo · 20/05/2015 19:39

I did rather walk into it LordC, didn't I? :o

Yonic, yes, it's definitely a 'come along Pond' type thing

INicked, it's never said in anger, I usually have a smile on my face at work as I like the job and the people that go with it.

hoppy, I want to add to the list of those urging you to go for the job. The young woman I mentioned upthread had to be persuaded to apply for her job as she doubted her own capabilities, it turns out she's perfect for it.

Apple, I've seen what happens to men who call women 'ladies' on MN. They are quite rightly eviscerated. :o

YonicScrewdriver · 20/05/2015 19:42

Bob Hewitt, 15 times grand slam winner, has been convicted of rape and sentenced for 8 years despite being 75. Good.

OP posts:
LassUnparalleled · 20/05/2015 20:12

DoctorTwo I have no objection to "lady". I occasionally go Ladies Day at the races- not women's day.

INickedAName · 20/05/2015 22:37

Dds fave program is Dr Who, I've never gotten into it, but when it's on TV, we have a snack night and we all watch it together, mostly because she likes to dissect every episode, and I figured if I'm gonna talk about it, I may as well know what I'm on about, I've watched enough to form the opinion that Matt Smith is the Best Doctor Ever. I still don't "get it" but I really enjoyed the Robin Hood episode.

UptoapointLordCopper · 21/05/2015 08:29

I rather like Peter Capaldi's Dr Who. I keep waiting for him to swear a lot. Grin

I have promised to watch Frozen with DS2. What have I let myself in for?

CollatalieSisters · 21/05/2015 08:59

Frozen: Disney tripe, with bug-eyed, sexy princesses, shouty songs and tweeness. But also a more positive message to be wary of the notion of romantic love, as peddled by, er, Disney. And, to be fair, the female leads are not passive, and it passes the Bechdel test.

drspouse · 21/05/2015 09:42

I quite like Doctor Who. OK, I love it. Don't know why that and not other scifi.

I generally knit/play on my phone/bounce DD on my knee while DS watches Cars/Frozen/101 Dalmatians/Shaun Ana Sheep for the millionth time. I will wait and see if he comes out with any more "only mens can drive diggers" and then maybe steel myself to doing the same for Bob and Wendy.

DH has banned Fireman Sam and I was right behind him on the grounds of dodgy accents. I do have a feeling that has a female firefighter, doesn't it? I have told DS our telly doesn't get it. How old do you think he'll be before he twigs?

ErrolTheDragon · 21/05/2015 10:30

Dr Who is the one broadcast TV show that we always watch together - DH and I both grew up with it. That and Star Trek, we're working our way through the box sets. I don't think DD has ever seen any of those as genderised (though obviously we have some comment on the sexism in the original series, its quite educational to realise that it was one of the best for equality at the time!).

As to fantasy, DD and I just dabble in the warm friendly waters of Sir Terry.

I don't remember any particular problem with kiddie programs/books - she was never into disney princesses, and was perfectly happy to identify with characters completely regardless of gender or indeed age. When 'playing out' books, she'd be Mr McGregor or the tailor of Gloucester.

UptoapointLordCopper · 21/05/2015 11:32

I liked Fireman Sam. Especially Norman's mum who keeps saying really funny things. Can't remember them now though. What's wrong with the accents?

drspouse · 21/05/2015 11:44

DH says they are cod Welsh (he has a lot of Welsh family).

INickedAName · 21/05/2015 13:03

Have you seen this vid uptoapoint?

Dd wants to get the scrabble out later after watching an item on the news about words like "lolz" and "bezzy" are now allowed. (I'll try find link).

Every time the Scrabble comes out when I go back home, you can guarantee that someone (me) contests every word placed and someone (my brother) spends the whole game sulking that "Nike" isn't allowed.

It took me years to enforce the rule of not simply adding an s and getting the double/triple points again. These new words are not going to work in my favour are they? :)

INickedAName · 21/05/2015 13:05

new words

UptoapointLordCopper · 21/05/2015 13:10

It was in Newsround! LOLZ.

Grin

And Grin at cod welsh.

LurcioAgain · 21/05/2015 13:20

I had to explain "cod Scottish" to some American friends recently.

Can I have a large G&T please? I'm on an internet discussion board connected with a hobby of mine, and got engaged in an argument with some "liberal feminists" (in quotes because actually I have every sympathy with genuine liberal feminists, but not with those who think liberalism = never calling a man out on his bad behaviour against women). It's been like playing bingo (won't go into details, as don't want anyone involved stumbling on the discussion) but I think the latest "misandry" accusation levelled at me has me standing up and shouting "HOUSE". It's been bloody draining, though there are a couple of other people firmly on my side and quite a few leaning to my side of the argument rather than the other.

INickedAName · 21/05/2015 13:26

Oops, I forgot the vid link.

Regeneration Goes Wrong

EBearhug · 21/05/2015 13:44

Isn't Fireman Sam originally in Welsh? Sam Tân?

Talking of Welsh and Scrabble - I have played Scrabble in Welsh on a Welsh board (different mix of letters in the bag.) It made my head hurt (and I don't think my Welsh abilities were really up to it.)

kickassangel · 21/05/2015 13:52

Hi,

Sorry, I somehow lost this thread and now trying to catch up. Bizarrely, this has been my first 'free' week since DD was born as she's away on a school trip, so I've gone crazy with nights out, going to the gym etc. and ahven't been on MN much. I'm currently sitting in an empty classroom, pretending to write reports, which I really should get on with as the head of the board is around (he's nice, he wouldn't care and would probably just be interested in MN if he found me on here).

Anyway - LOTs of discussion about The Doctor in our house as DD is obsessed. My MIL one time said that she thought that a different ethnicity for the doctor would be interesting, in a good way, but 'Ohh no" to the idea of a female doctor. But then, she reads the Daily Mail and thinks it's intellectual and high brow, so there we go.

Went to see Far From the MAdding Crowd on Mon (no DD! - night out!). Now I see why Gabriel Oak is such a popular figure on these boards. Oh yes.

And .... this is hitting the local news for me. In itself, only a small thing, but with potentially big implications for colleges in the US.

YonicScrewdriver · 21/05/2015 17:55

The prospect of a female Doctor was given the nod by the Sarah Jeanne adventure.

Thanks Yonic. That reminded me that I haven't looked at the history club for ages and when I looked it reminded me that we haven't been to Hampton Court yet! May go at half term.

ISaySteadyOn · 22/05/2015 17:36

For ST:TNG lovers, Marina Sirtis said she would like to play the Doctor if they ever went with a female one. I'd like that. But I also think Claudia Black from Farscape could be awesome.

kickassangel · 22/05/2015 17:46

When Matt Smith first emerged from the Tardis he felt his hair and said, still male, which implies that female is an option.

alexpolistigers · 22/05/2015 19:33

I haven't even seen all the Dr Who episodes yet. I have been catching up, but I have only just finished the David Tennant ones.

I like the thought of a female Doctor. One wonders what would happen to the sidekick role.
