Just starting this one as the last is nearly full

OP posts:

Why does FWR or whatever it is called these days have such a negative perception on MN?

I had a really bad day, I'm stressed and DH is out. A bit of time here and I'm feeling much more cheerful.

Loving Jeanne's thread on identifying as a feminist and the celery vs radish argument

You lot are awesomeSmile

YonicScrewdriver · 25/03/2015 20:47

So in the commercial world, I might get an opinion from an accountant and a lawyer to be "belt and braces" sure that I was not going to get in trouble.

The contraceptive ones are good as they have a flavour of the protection! Suspenders and hold ups I like too. I kinda need a non sexually related thing for work though!!

YonicScrewdriver · 25/03/2015 20:48

I agree oubliette, there are lots of grumpier places on MN than we manage here!

OublietteBravo · 25/03/2015 20:56

I know Yonic - I don't understand why anyone goes anywhere near AIBU. Start a thread there and you are cannon fodder.

UptoapointLordCopper · 25/03/2015 21:01

I see. Thank you!

Hovis2001 · 25/03/2015 21:14

Glasses and contacts? Gloves and mittens? Not explicitly female, though. R.e. braces, I think they tend to be pushed out to the side of the boobs if that makes sense, but I think that would a) reduce their functionality and b) make them fairly uncomfortable.

Scarf and pashmina?!

Jeanne's thread on how you identify as a feminist got me thinking about something that I've never been able to satisfactorily answer for myself - can/should men identify as feminists? When I raise this question in RL people tend to get a bit lemon-faced and obviously there's the argument for an open and welcoming movement. But on the other hand I see all of the famous male actors in "this is what a feminist looks like" t-shirt and I wonder if the implication is that feminism can only be acceptable IF approved by men. Confused Any thoughts?

If this isn't an appropriate discussion for the pub please say and I will go start a thread instead of mumbling about it over the top of my beer! Smile

ChopperGordino · 25/03/2015 21:21

Tbh hovels I flip between yes and no on men calling themselves feminists. But it's not really up to me. Dp describes himself as an ally.

ChopperGordino · 25/03/2015 21:21

Hovis sorry!

ChopperGordino · 25/03/2015 21:30

There are some good posts on this recent thread on the topic www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/2251312-Can-men-be-feminists

I'm not posting that to say that you shouldn't talk about this on this thread, just that there are some thought-provoking posts on that and other threads on the topic too which might be worth reading

Hovis2001 · 25/03/2015 21:32

Haha, that's ok! Hovels has a good ring to it. Grin

Yes, my DH goes with ally too. Several RL feminist friends seem to find this almost distressing, though.

Hovis2001 · 25/03/2015 21:33

Ooh, thanks for the link - that's great! I knew there must have been a thread (or ten) about it on here at some point. I'll be really embarassed if I find I've posted on one of them and forgotten about it.

ChopperGordino · 25/03/2015 21:36

Oh blimey that happens all the time. except i usually think what a twat I sounded!

SoMuchForSubtlety · 25/03/2015 21:41

Just to cheer you all up - this

Sigh.

ChopperGordino · 25/03/2015 21:47

Doesn't surprise me at all. I would be interested to see what the figures are for the UK. Also broken down for POC. I work with senior nurses and compared to the intake at student and regular staff level, men and white people are heavily over-represented at senior level.

YonicScrewdriver · 25/03/2015 21:50

Hood and umbrella/gloves and mittens both sound like something I could say in an office! I'm happy if it's unisex rather than explicitly female. Thanks everyone Grin

I don't mind men being called feminists but I can see the argument for 'ally'

Hovis2001 · 25/03/2015 22:06

Yes, you did. You also made jokes about AnyFucker's baubles. Grin

YonicScrewdriver · 25/03/2015 22:08

I'm so classy Grin

EBearhug · 25/03/2015 22:12

Of course women can wear braces. Does no one remember the '80s? (Am possibly showing my age here.)

You can either wear braces - slightly to the side or right over the top. I think the former was more usual, for practical reasons.

StillLostAtTheStation · 25/03/2015 22:15

Glasses and contacts

No. I wear contact lenses for distance but decrepitude now means I have to wear reading glasses for reading but it's not the same as belt and braces.

YonicScrewdriver · 25/03/2015 22:18

Like this, Ebear??

lovebananarama.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/poster-brace-yourself.html

UptoapointLordCopper · 25/03/2015 22:19

I'm sitting on the fence too re: men as feminists, but will go and read that thread surreptitiously tomorrow while being bored to death in a meeting. I hope it's not dispiriting. I find the make-up thread a bit dispiriting.

I love AF's name. Always put a spring in my steps for some reason. Very spirited. Grin

Have I overused "spirit"?

Would be interesting to know about salaries in childcare too. Or would it? Hmm

I'm rambling. Best go to bed. I'm reading Stardust. Smile Smile

YonicScrewdriver · 25/03/2015 22:22

Marvellous, Still, thanks for that.

Any of the other light hearted contributions that you did like?

YonicScrewdriver · 25/03/2015 22:22

Sleep well LordC!

YonicScrewdriver · 25/03/2015 23:11

Vampyre, The White Queen and The Red Queen are in the Kindle sale so I'm going to try them!

EBearhug · 25/03/2015 23:16

Exactly like that, Yonic. I loved those high-waisted trousers which were baggy round the hips, but tapered down the leg and the hems were turned up. Didn't have braces myself, but my best friend did have, with some funky pattern on.

And Grandad shirts. They were about the same time (when I was about 13).

I don't care if the '80s were the decade which fashion forgot. I had clothes I wore to pieces.
