Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

What do men think feminists should be focusing their energies on?

PetulaGordino · 08/02/2015 21:31

It's pretty clear that there are many men with constructive criticism to offer feminists in terms of what feminist issues they should be focusing their energies, activism and outrage on.

This vital advice is at risk of being lost, spread as it is among myriad threads in this section. Perhaps it would be a good idea to collect it together into one thread, for ongoing reference when posters in this section consider their feminist activities and whether they are really focusing on the right issues.

Obviously it should be borne in mind that feminists are only able to focus strictly on one topic at a time in terms of activism and outrage, so don't overload us with too many issues at once!

Some of my brogues are surprisingly uncomfy

Sorry to hear that. Maybe a gay man will lend you some more flamboyant footwear.

PetulaGordino · 09/02/2015 00:16

He doesn't have time and it's not his fucking problem. That's why he's not doing anything about it, as he has stated on other threads

Plenty of time to tell women (who are already actively trying to fight these things) that they should be focusing on it

I have to wear socks with my brogues. They rub my heel something chronic.

LillyEvans · 09/02/2015 00:16

Why is child abuse a feminist issue? Genuine question. I see it as a big issue, but not a particularly feminist one.

CaptainHolt · 09/02/2015 00:17

Not sure if lesbians are allowed to talk to gay men. The flamboyant/dungaree vortex may be activated and the universe will be destroyed, possibly.

Linskibinski · 09/02/2015 00:17

I'm currently wearing booroo boots they are incredibly comfortable! I await the obvious forthcoming confusion about my sexual orientation Grin

Magnetic1 · 09/02/2015 00:19

"But thanks for the head up on rape.

I look like my sister if I wear anything like that. Not that there's anything wrong with that!

I have a new pair of 16 hole docs that have given me a blister. Never had a problem with the 8 hole ones. Is this a feminist issue I should be concerned about? More or less important than Guiding?

PetulaGordino · 09/02/2015 00:21

Depends on whether you care about misogynist homophobes making assumptions about your sexuality buffy. I expect you don't much mind that

Ought I to have brogues?

Are you a lesbian? Do you want to stop working class men from calling you love? Are you an ex-venture scout or a Brown Owl? We need more information. It's not a trivial issue.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 09/02/2015 00:22

Ok.... Child abuse.... Men stop sexually abusing children, men and women work together to stop all forms of child abuse, including voting in a government which won't leave a ridiculous percentage of children below the poverty line.

Rape... Men, stop raping women and each other.

That's 2 of them sorted for you. Not bad for one nights work.

Now, how do we combat your rampant homophobia?

Linskibinski · 09/02/2015 00:24

I'm not sure there will ever be accurate rape statistics from women or men and again a fundamental mistake that clothing plays any part in victimology. Otherwise what kind of a hellhole would the swimming baths be? Hmm

CaptainHolt · 09/02/2015 00:24

Tis the world we live in unfortunately

I thought changing the world we lived in was 'a trivial issue'. I must have missed a memo.

Actually, Leeds is full of elderly, straight chaps calling each other 'love'. Local thing.

Meanwhile, t'internet, no need for address terms other than poster's posting name. Different sort of discourse from that you'd find in the pub, where a heightened level of address term bonhomie may prevail.

Linskibinski · 09/02/2015 00:27

Maybe the first step to changing the world is we all wear brogues. And doc martins at the weekend. Grin

'rape or hurt others unfortunately or take advantage of those too drunk to know what they're doing'

Just 'rape or hurt others', then. Fixed that for you.

Linskibinski · 09/02/2015 00:30

It's all about the shoes. Who knew! So simple, stupid that we missed it reallyBlush

SabrinaMulhollandJjones1984 · 09/02/2015 00:31

Sadly there's always going to be sick weirdos who want to rape or hurt others unfortunately or take advantage of those too drunk to know what they're doing. Tis the world we live in unfortunately.

That is an utterly idiotic comment to make. Totally ignorant. Totally lacking in any knowledge, education or feeling.

Some of us have been raped by partners, relatives, people we love, trust. People we have shared our lives, our beds with, people who are not "sick weirdos" in the way you mean. Such ignorance is astounding.

Your wife sent you here for a reason, darling. It was get an education, love.

PetulaGordino · 09/02/2015 00:32

God do we really have to take responsibility for educating him too?

OP posts:
CaptainHolt · 09/02/2015 00:35

Has anyone ever noticed how often people call you 'mate' at the tip? Both the people who work there and the other people chucking stuff out. I wonder if it's anything to do with shoes. I've seen people in wellies at the tip, but people in wellies with a dog/horse wouldn't get dressed as 'mate' on a bridleway etc.

I think I ought to go to sleep now.

SabrinaMulhollandJjones1984 · 09/02/2015 00:36

Just love that Magnetic thought puffins was apologising to him Grin

Legendary crosspost.

JassyRadlett · 09/02/2015 00:38

Can you educate me further about the relative rape rates in different countries and how is varies by prevailing culture?
