Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

What do men think feminists should be focusing their energies on?

It's pretty clear that there are many men with constructive criticism to offer feminists in terms of what feminist issues they should be focusing their energies, activism and outrage on.

This vital advice is at risk of being lost, spread as it is among myriad threads in this section. Perhaps it would be a good idea to collect it together into one thread, for ongoing reference when posters in this section consider their feminist activities and whether they are really focusing on the right issues.

Obviously it should be borne in mind that feminists are only able to focus strictly on one topic at a time in terms of activism and outrage, so don't overload us with too many issues at once!

S'ok, Annie, it's not really about the woman. She's just an object, so her sexuality is irrelevant.

Petula, can you add to your list of stuff feminists need to fix 'an unreasonable demand for evidence to back up hyperbolic statements, if the man has an anecdote from his personal life?'

PuffinsAreFictitious · 09/02/2015 00:00

I was apologising to AnyFucker, who was laughing with us at your utter twattery.

You homophobic git.

CaptainHolt · 09/02/2015 00:01

If I suspected a woman was a lesbian

How can you tell if I'm a lesbian?

If it's not sexually charged then why does it matter if I'm a lesbian?

If it is sexually charged then why are you saying it's not?

If it's not sexually charged then why does the sexuality of the person being patronised come into it?

AnyFucker · 09/02/2015 00:01

hehe

Linskibinski · 09/02/2015 00:02

Magnetic1, why don't you just use that persons actual name? It's easy, watch me, I say, "hello magnetic1 how are you?" Then you say, "hello lynskibinski, I am well thank you" easy! HTH Grin

JassyRadlett · 09/02/2015 00:03

Oh! Cross posts and I was wrong.

So calling women 'love' is about (perceived) sexual availability then?

PuffinsAreFictitious · 09/02/2015 00:03

Captain.... no doubt you wear dungarees and comfy shoes, and are in no way flamboyant, you probably also have short spiky hair..... if we're following the Viz Big Book of Stereotypes here.

CaptainHolt · 09/02/2015 00:04

How can you tell if I'm a lesbian?

Not when I'm in bed with another woman, of course, just when I'm walking my whippet or queuing at the whelk stall.

CaptainHolt · 09/02/2015 00:05

Some of my brogues are surprisingly uncomfy Sad

Magnetic1 · 09/02/2015 00:06

"Anything other than scouts we should concentrate on, Magnetic?"

Child abuse, female genital modification and rape are the most important issues facing females today. If the people campaigning to take away men's Page 3 put as much effort in to tackling these issues the world could be a better place indeed. Smile Unfortunately many seem to spend their time focusing on trivial nonsense I've noticed.

INickedAName · 09/02/2015 00:08

It's mutilation not modification as you already know.

Magnetic1 · 09/02/2015 00:08

"How can you tell if I'm a lesbian?"

You can just tell sometimes. I am very intuitive.

LillyEvans · 09/02/2015 00:08

What would happen if a lesbian woman called a gay man love?

JassyRadlett · 09/02/2015 00:08

Captain, that's cos you're supposed to wear Docs as part of the official uniform.

PetulaGordino · 09/02/2015 00:09

So you're deliberately keeping "modification" instead of "mutilation" despite previously having been corrected?

Perhaps you think it's funny to deliberately replace the word?

I forgot and Mumsnet has no "edit post" function.

I apologise. Flowers

TooSpotty · 09/02/2015 00:13

Magnetic, pal, you do know that your clever wind-up isn't actually, well, winding anyone up, right?

In Oxfordshire by the way it's pretty common for working class men to call each other 'love'.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 09/02/2015 00:13

Mag what are you doing to combat those issues? Maybe if you, with your big manly powers and clearly superior knowledge of feminism, worked to fight female genital MUTILATION and child abuse, we could carry on worrying our pretty little heads over rampant everyday sexism like Page 3?

Oh, and of course, it's the feminists job to stop rape too. Because men can't just, oh, I don't know, STOP RAPING PEOPLE!?

JassyRadlett · 09/02/2015 00:13

Can I ask why child abuse is a women's issue? Just so I know why I shouldn't bother men about it. Particularly given the average perpetrator profile.

Are we calling it modification not mutilation, now? How.... euphemismtic.

But thanks for the head up on rape.

So what you mean is if someone has dyke spikes, docs, and dungarees and is carrying a rainbow flag then you'll call them 'pal'. All other lesbians and bisexual and straight women will be addressed sexually, based on their perceived sexual availability?
