Carry on.

OP posts:

Why is there a pic of Alison Saunders on the article but not of him?

I expect he is touting for clients with that blog post

FloraFox · 07/02/2015 09:46

There's a picture of him on the Mirror article. He's 71 and he looks like what he would probably describe as a bon vivant.

I don't expect he thinks that when he's been out rat arsed, that he should expect to be anally penetrated by some wandering homosexual chancing his arm.

The depressing thing is that the Mirror article has a poll and 42% of people agree with him. Angry Sad

LightningOnlyStrikesOnce · 07/02/2015 09:52

Another legal person going very wrong, I've heard of a few lately. Let's try and hold on to the fact that they must be in the minority or the law and guidance on rape would never have changed. And that he's old so again hopefully not representative now.

Am I the only one who thinks that really the separation between law and ethics has gone way too far if anyone like this is permitted to continue in the profession?

Depressing though. I would say, chuck us the gin, but, hey, I might have to walk home...

PetulaGordino · 07/02/2015 09:55

Thanks, I didn't really need to know what he looks like (thpugh on reflection probably a good idea to know just in case I cross his path when I'm drunk in charge of a short skirt), I just thought it was odd to have a pic of her and not him

LightningOnlyStrikesOnce · 07/02/2015 10:21

Is everyone sure that it wasn't supposed to be a sick wind-up? The Mirror poll is the really depressing thing... still, The Mirror...

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 07/02/2015 12:12

I did have a good two minutes where I thought it must be satire. But nope, it seems he's really that awful.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 07/02/2015 13:38

And that he's old so again hopefully not representative now.

Sorry, but his vile opinions are not a function of his age. Surely you know that many younger men have the same attitudes. And many older men do not.

grimbletart · 07/02/2015 13:40

No one has yet commented on this:

Referring to the DPP being a woman, the writer said: “Is it just me, or are women taking over the world?” and went on to suggest that allowing women to serve on juries has weakened the system of justice: “In days of old, the jury were all male, and until recently, over the age of 21 and property owners… Successive governments watered down these prerequisites, presumably in the interests of political correctness.”

I suspect his clearly erroneous attitude that we wicked women are taking over the world informs his attitudes to rape. He probably thinks that this is the only action men can take to keep a woman where she belongs - under a bloke.

LightningOnlyStrikesOnce · 07/02/2015 13:53

Scone, in view of his full statement including the thing about juries, as grimble says, I do think it is a function of age to some extent. Yes rape and porn culture is still rife, but not many are fool enough to suggest we should not participate in juries because vagina. And yes not all older men are like that, but they are the ones who were raised in times that were like that and the ideas are not totally alien. Kind of related to that 'do you think your dd will have a better life' (or similar) thread, isn't it.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 07/02/2015 14:14

There are plenty of younger men, especially religious fundamentalists, who think that women should not serve on juries or otherwise take part in public life.

It's misguided to approach these attitudes as one of age; it can contribute to a complacency that supports the notion that the lives of women will be better with the dying off of older generations. Misogyny and extremist views about the status of women run through every generation.

LightningOnlyStrikesOnce · 07/02/2015 14:20

'contribute to complacency' sounds sensible. Consider me better informed, ta.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 07/02/2015 14:45

Thanks, Lightening. I will admit that, as an old Second Waver, I do get a bit tetchy on the age thing. That and the fact that when I ponder the 50 years or so that I have been an active feminist, the last few years seem especially bad for women, and that in many ways, attitudes have regressed. But that's a thread for another day. Smile

grimbletart · 07/02/2015 15:00

Scone - I'm a second waver too. Us 'oldies' do get tetchy sometimes as we get ageism to deal with as well as sexism. Grin. I defence of us oldies I have to say that I see the sort of sexism among young men these days that would have disgusted my (even older than I am) DH in the 1960s.

LightningOnlyStrikesOnce · 07/02/2015 15:17

Blush resolves to learn how to think a little I'd be interested in that thread if you fancy starting it then!

SconeRhymesWithGone · 07/02/2015 15:24

Ah yes, grimble. The sixties. Good times, good times. Smile

SconeRhymesWithGone · 07/02/2015 15:32

Maybe I will start that thread, Lightning. But right now I have to go pick up the little ones for an afternoon of baking (with granddad) and a night of watching a movie (Frozen maybe?) with both of us.

See y'all later. Smile
