Love your new name Buffy

FloraFox · 06/02/2015 21:36

Grin @ Big Paleo.

Artifexmumdi · 06/02/2015 21:41

I honestly thought the OP of that thread was hilarious satire. I was really dismayed to find out she was serious.

It is like Pluto all over again. When I discovered it wasn't a planet, a little bit of my childhood died. Then I heard recently it might be again...

On a totally other tangent, can I ask you guys something random. If you wanted to start a career, and wanted to do something which helped women, what would you do? I am an ex-lawyer trying to brainstorm about career options, and I thought 'why not a feminist brainstorm along with the others' (doing 'related to law' 'local employers', etc so this one need not be sensible or in any way related to my training. Just total random ideas). I live in a large town (Buffy knows the location, happy to PM anyone else) so not London centric type stuff. Thanks in advance to anyone who wants to contribute!

That's the bugger with legal aid type stuff. Sad In the long term, I'd quite like to volunteer somewhere, like a drop in centre. Once I had kids at school I could volunteer in the day if I didn't work 5 days. Or long term DH should be away less overnight/earning more to make a regular babysitter possible, when I could volunteer at an evening session.

I kind of see it as a volunteering thing though, since it's so hard to get paid for it.

FloraFox · 06/02/2015 22:08

Do you want to do something law related? Do you need to make a certain amount of money?

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 06/02/2015 22:13

Absolutely doesn't need to be law related.

Trying to be totally random in my brainstorming in the hope I see something that leads somewhere that leads somewhere, so not too worried about money either. TBH, the deal with DH was that a few years of me as a SAHM gave him the wrap around care for utter work focus so afterwards I get a bit of a 'pass' on establishing something new as he'll be more senior so as long as I can cover one x nursery (so that, as a household we aren't actually 'down' for long) it should come out in the wash.

Benefits advisor/something with the CAB? Advocacy work? Social work?

caroldecker · 06/02/2015 22:22

Could you set up some sort of drop-in with the local university law department, using final year students to provide advice for women (divorce / DV etc)

What about helping women set up businesses? There's very little you need to be regulated for now.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 06/02/2015 23:28

Sorry. Chick woke. Then I had a vodka and now can't process (lightweight ). will check in tomorrow.

UptoapointLordCopper · 07/02/2015 00:31

Hello! I've been out and drunk a variety of pale drinks derived from grapes! >

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 07/02/2015 00:45

So, feeling a bit like I'm dropping a turd into the middle of Sunday lunch, has anyone else seen this?
www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/barrister-sparks-outcry-by-claiming-men-should-be-cleared-of-rape-if-the-victim-was-drunk-10030529.html

EBearhug · 07/02/2015 00:57

I know whose Sunday lunch you should drop it in. What an utter arse. It does look like it should be in the Poke or something, and it's so depressing that it's not, and even more depressing that he's part of the legal system.

LazyJanePainter · 07/02/2015 02:41

I was hoping " barrister" meant "I did a law degree, didn't make much of it, managed to scrape in to a pupillage but never really made much of that either but haven't actually been disbarred so can still call myself a barrister" but it doesn't.

He really is an experienced criminal barrister.

I see he lives in Combe Florey, Somerset which is where Evelyn Waugh lived. Much as I admire Waugh he had some reprehensible views too (although not as bad as this) perhaps it's something in the water.

Crikey, he really really hates women.

To quote:
“You’ve seen the news sequences of girls who, regardless of the weather, have their backsides sticking out of their dresses and their tits hanging out of the same dress.

"Wandering around the streets, staggering around and then wondering at the end of all that why somebody has, if you like, taken advantage of them.

End quote.

Am I the only one who reads this as meaning "Actually, when I see young women dressed for a night out, I turn into a lecherous monster, but I'm too old to have a chance of them shagging me consensually so I'd like the law changed so I can rape them with impunity"? He really comes across as a vile man (clearly thinks it was a mistake to include the working classes in jury service as well as women - basically hates anyone who isn't just like him).

PetulaGordino · 07/02/2015 08:33

Hates women and apparently also has a pretty low opinion of men

YonicScrewdriver · 07/02/2015 09:07

Penguins, I'm going to PM you.

Can that "barrister" please be pursued for hate speech? I bet he would be if his target were different races/different sexual orientations.

He's a classic example of someone who wouldn't have got where he was without being a white, UMC man.

“The protection in law that they have got seems to me to be twofold.

“Number One: Don’t go out in the first place.

“Or Number Two: If you do go out don’t get rat-arsed. If you get rat arsed, I’m sorry, you are asking for trouble.

So women shouldn't leave the house because men might rape them? If he is correct, all men should be tagged and monitored at all times so that when a man rapes someone, he can be easily found.
