Feminist Pub 15: The Bluestocking hangs up its, err, stocking and hopes for a chatty Christmas and a Feminist New Year

Festive greetings!

This is the 15th incarnation of the Pub and is meant as a place to drop by with random thoughts and meandering chats, on feminist or other related themes. Anything you want to mull over but not necessarily start a thread about. Alternatively, get some booze and snacks and hang out! Lurkers, newbies and oldbies welcome.

We have a pub goat, a feminist cannon for firing at crazy sexists and we cheer each other up when patriarchy grinds us down...

Ah - too much to hope it was BBC or something! But it's nice to know it exists out there, even if I can't get to it.

buffy - oh, gosh ... yes. I really, really, really want to kill all forms of online assessment/teaching. I used to have to deal with this absurd system where I was required to set my class reading via the VLE. Which promptly fucked up the formatting of anything I uploaded, and wouldn't accept large PDFs. Hmm

Let me try that again -
Women in STEM

Just quickly, Bridget Christie (feminist comedian) has a new series on radio 4 starting today (on iplayer now)

EElisavetaofJingleBellsornia · 08/01/2015 23:17

Yay for a marking swap! Buffy's and Jeanne's sound quite interesting. I am validating a load of reports on the performance of local authorities in particular areas. There are A Lot of local authorities....

EBearhug · 08/01/2015 23:21

I thought I heard it last week... have I just been hearing too many trailers?

YonicSleighdriver · 08/01/2015 23:30

I think you can get it on DVD, Jeanne!

I discovered these a couple of years ago after re-reading Gaudy Night as a result of an MN thread. I love Harriet Walter as Harriet Vane.

BertieBotts · 09/01/2015 01:09

I think marking ought to be swapped on principle, it's got to be more interesting.

Oh yes don't bother with that troll. I think it's the same one from yesterday, they're not even good.

DoctorTwo · 09/01/2015 03:39

I listened to Bridget Christie on my way back here and laughed too much to remember most of it. Her use of language is reminiscent of her husband, not that that's a bad thing, it could be dd2 minus the swears. It's just a shame it's only a 4 part series, she warrants more than that as does the subject.

kickassangel · 09/01/2015 04:09

If only I'd known we were up for a marking swap. I've just been reading 8th grade (year 9) creative fairy tales. Most of them fairly predictive, but one student had a character who was the only human and no-one (including the character) knew if the character was male or female. We had a really good discussion about how to use pronouns, and how to give the background info so the reader would know that the character was the only human, but without breaking the flow of the story.

I get geekily excited about those kinds of discussions.

I always set a choice of essay titles otherwise I have to grade 60 papers that are the same. SO much better when there's a variety.

kickassangel · 09/01/2015 04:11

Oh, and we had a 'too cold' day with all the schools shut. It was -5F (That's about -21C) before wind chill. Sad My face when I had to go outside for 5 seconds.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 09/01/2015 04:54

It snowed today here in Florida. It has been years since that happened.

Well done Buffy.

We are having a "too grumpy" day here.

The thing I hate most about VLE is drop-down menus. I can input 60 quicker than I can drop the fucking menu and select 60 seventy fucking times.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 09/01/2015 11:43

Yes, grumpy here too (though thanks for alerting me to the Sayers DVDs, I might buy those to cheer myself up).

I can't get my mind around the book I'm meant to be writing, and I'm having an attack of imposter syndrome.

UptoapointLordCopper · 09/01/2015 12:23

I'm writing a chapter for a book. I don't have imposter syndrome for this case - I know that I don't know anything about the topic. But neither does anyone else. At least I would write it honestly. Grin

YonicSleighdriver · 09/01/2015 13:17

Do the Wonder Woman pose like Amy Cuddy, Jeanne!

JeanneDeMontbaston · 09/01/2015 13:22

Grin at upto.

Thanks yonic. Will do. Virtually, I think, not really.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 09/01/2015 13:26

Jeanne. You are obviously very clever as I don't always understand your blog.

Unless I am very thick. Which is a possibility Grin

JeanneDeMontbaston · 09/01/2015 13:28

Being incomprehensible isn't a sure sign of intelligence.

But thank you. Grin

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 09/01/2015 13:31

Grin I follow the layman's bits. I just know astonishingly little about your subject area I am afraid.

Ergo you clearly know lots. and are Very Clever
