Feminist Pub 15: The Bluestocking hangs up its, err, stocking and hopes for a chatty Christmas and a Feminist New Year

Festive greetings!

This is the 15th incarnation of the Pub and is meant as a place to drop by with random thoughts and meandering chats, on feminist or other related themes. Anything you want to mull over but not necessarily start a thread about. Alternatively, get some booze and snacks and hang out! Lurkers, newbies and oldbies welcome.

We have a pub goat, a feminist cannon for firing at crazy sexists and we cheer each other up when patriarchy grinds us down...

I might print out the latest email from DS's school specially so that I can burn it with the Envelopes of Patriarchy (anyone fancy that as their next name change). Despite the fact that DH pays his school fees, the school insist on sending the invoices to me. It is the only thing I get that DH doesn't get sent, and the only thing I get from them addressed to Mrs HisName.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 18/12/2014 22:41

Sorry, buffy! Blush

I can't resist the spelling and grammar ones. Moth to a flame.

I also like the ones that grow into something really radical from a small issue, like when someone posts about a minor disgreement and it turns out they were really struggling hugely, and everyone helps them figure out what to do and stops them blaming themselves. Those are lovely.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/12/2014 22:42

Haven't been in for a while, can I just ask something... you're all referring to FWR but the topic now seems to have mutated into 'Feminism Chat' ... when and why did that happen? Confused

Envelopes of the Patriarchy, oh yes... my DM sent one addressed to Dr and Mrs Dragon once .... only the once though, think she did Drs X and E Dragon after I'd ticked her off.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 18/12/2014 22:43

MNHQ has randomly renamed lots of sections. Confused

When did it happen?

OublietteBravo · 18/12/2014 22:46

Erm, not sure when it happened Someone in the pub did comment on it at the time. Not this pub or the last one. Maybe No. 12 or 13 (or whenever that was in real time).

It happened a while back. Not sure when. Something to do with using MN on mobiles and having shorter titles.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 18/12/2014 22:49

No, but I could have been better.

I was thinking about one issue and not enough about another. And it's not terribly sisterly to do that really.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/12/2014 22:53

Thanks Shorter for mobiles makes sense. I'd only noticed this one (I think my other regular haunts were short anyway) so I was wondering if there was some deep meaning.

'judgernauts' is brilliant!

PuffinsAreFictitious · 18/12/2014 22:55

I am now ridiculously happy that Buffy didn't seem aloof. Xmas Blush

OublietteBravo · 18/12/2014 22:55

I'm so glad I popped into the pub this evening. I feel much better for having had a bit of a moan. Off to bed now though as I need to be able to function properly tomorrow (I have an impromptu one-to-one with my bosses boss first thing - no idea what she wants to talk to me about).

YonicSleighdriver · 18/12/2014 23:04

Good luck oubliette.

Haven't watched The Fall finale yet so also want no spoilers!

Aw, glad you feel better oubliette, good luck with the one to one.

I feel better for checking into the pub too. I've felt really out of touch all term. I was lurking and reading, but I like time to witter too.

YonicSleighdriver · 18/12/2014 23:11

No, no, we like it too!

Wine?

the scissor handles are too small for him to hold comfortably (he did it anyway). But they're just ordinary ones, nothig fancy, so they must be designed for women's hands which tend to be smaller
Surely tailors, who are traditionally men (whereas dressmakers/sewers are traditionally women, and please pronounce sewers correctly), would use pinking shears, and therefore they'd have bigger handles?

kickassangel · 19/12/2014 03:54

Hi. Just checking in so I can keep track. Just had a crappy day with an important medical appt cancelled and I just sat in the car and sobbed because I have been so ill for so long and I really really need this appointment and the right medication to get better and even waiting another 6 days is horribly stressful.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 19/12/2014 04:24

So sorry to hear that, kickass. I hope you will feel better soon. Flowers

FibonacciSeries · 19/12/2014 04:30

Kickass Flowers

New dawn, new day for me to try not to put my foot in my mouth, but at least DH and I got a decent night of sleep so we will be able to function a bit better I hope.

kickassangel · 19/12/2014 05:06

thanks for the support - I know I'm whinging on, but I'm ridiculously over worried about this. I won't get better until the thyroid problem gets sorted out, and that can't happen until I see the specialist, and there aren't any appointments available and, and, and.

Anyway - to give it a feminist slant - it pisses me off that in the UK thyroid stuff is treated as such a minor thing. I was told that my thyroid wasn't working well, but wasn't bad enough to get treatment, although actually it was! and I had thyroid symptoms my entire life, but always got told I was too young to get tested. Why do so many medical issues that affect women get brushed aside like that? I nearly died last time my thyroid wasn't working (hence my anxiety) but I didn't go to a doctor because I'd been told so often not to make a fuss.

I should try to sleep, but am so over anxious now that I'm not sure I can. Maybe I'll raid the mince pie stash instead.

PoinsettiaGordino · 19/12/2014 06:40

That's what I thought ebearhug - but maybe you would have to get "professional grade" ones for that? I just have standard ones from a haberdashery, but I admt I haven't looked any harder because I found the ones I needed off the shelf. I was wondering if people with larger hands have to get them elsewhere, or whether they are easily available. I didn't think about it until dp was using my very ordinary ones and found them uncomfortable

PoinsettiaGordino · 19/12/2014 07:06

Hope you are now sleeping kickass Flowers

FibonacciSeries · 19/12/2014 07:54

Kickass, I saw a good consultant in London for my thyroid. Would be happy to pass on the details if you'd be interested.
