Feminist Pub 15: The Bluestocking hangs up its, err, stocking and hopes for a chatty Christmas and a Feminist New Year

Festive greetings!

This is the 15th incarnation of the Pub and is meant as a place to drop by with random thoughts and meandering chats, on feminist or other related themes. Anything you want to mull over but not necessarily start a thread about. Alternatively, get some booze and snacks and hang out! Lurkers, newbies and oldbies welcome.

We have a pub goat, a feminist cannon for firing at crazy sexists and we cheer each other up when patriarchy grinds us down...

Sorry to hear that Puffins. Do you think she did it on purpose? Or do people just not think about these things?? I'm divorced but have kept Mrs Married Name simply because I want to have the same surname as my kids, and it was my name for so long, that it really is MY name now, if you see what I mean. (And I couldn't be arsed to change all the details on bank stuff, mortgages etc etc) Anyway, yesterday my brother and sister-in-law sent me a Christmas card addressed to Ms Maiden Name! How dare they assume that I will go by that convention!! And it's a Christmas card. They could have just sent it to Rosabud, or the Rosabud family, it's hardly a formal document!!

OublietteBravo · 18/12/2014 21:53

In fact can I fire it from the cannon (the envelope anyway - the DC will get upset if I destroy the card from grandma & granddad)?

BOOM Xmas Grin

FibonacciSeries · 18/12/2014 21:54

Can I hide in here for a little while? (and cover my eyes; I'm watching The Fall and it's truly stressful, on top of the not great MN day I've had today)

JeanneDeMontbaston · 18/12/2014 21:58

What happened, fib?

I believe there is a proposed FWR tradition that we shall gather all the envelopes of mis-addressed cards and put them to the flames. Dancing around the fire with broomsticks optional.

OublietteBravo · 18/12/2014 21:59

Hi Jeanne

Hi Fibonacci - I've had a fairly stressful day too (in RL - haven't been on MN much, so no idea what is going on here at the moment). Would Wine help?

JeanneDeMontbaston · 18/12/2014 22:01

Wine raised in your direction too, oubliette.

I hope the stress is quickly over.

FibonacciSeries · 18/12/2014 22:01

My fascination with languages got the best of me and I put my foot firmly in my mout, and someone keeps beating me over it. Can't say I don't deserve it, but I feel I'm being burned at the stake.

OublietteBravo · 18/12/2014 22:02

Sounds like a great tradition - I'll add 'broomstick' to my Christmas list.

UptoapointLordCopper · 18/12/2014 22:06

I'll join in with the envelop-burning.

I have a cold coming on.

I don't dare to watch the Fall. First season was pretty stressful.

FibonacciSeries · 18/12/2014 22:08

Second season even worse in my opinion. I've just chewed up my nails to the bone.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 18/12/2014 22:08

Excellent. We all need broomsticks.

(I fully expect this will go down in history on the sad MRA trolls' website)

PuffinsAreFictitious · 18/12/2014 22:08

I'm up for that fire Jeanne and it made DS smile.

Oh, and going back to the potential trek To The North. Toddlers are completely necessary. Especially those who are clever with water and generally amazing.

Kim.. everyone I've met and I've met a few from here has been uniformly lovely. Maybe that's why I just don't get the whole MN 'those women from FWR are all meanies' thing.

OublietteBravo · 18/12/2014 22:15

I hope I'll have everything under control by next week (I'm planing on finishing work on 24 Dec and not going back in until 6 Jan). However, we are really short-staffed (I've been doing my role plus my ex-colleagues role for 15 months now as there is a recruitment freeze) and December is always busy anyway. And people keep ignoring the fact that my diary is blocked out and putting meetings in it. At this rate I will have to work between Christmas and New Year - I shall be most upset if this happens (and livid if I do this and they don't let me roll the holiday over into 2015).

Sorry - off-topic moaning there. I'll grab my Wine and sit quietly in the corner now.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 18/12/2014 22:16

Oh, good! Smile

JeanneDeMontbaston · 18/12/2014 22:17

Eek, sorry, that was to puffins! Shock

oub, sorry, that sounds exhausting.

(Do we have an 'off-topic' here?!)

OublietteBravo · 18/12/2014 22:18

Oooooh - are we trekking to The North? That sounds fun.

OublietteBravo · 18/12/2014 22:20

Do you think MNHQ wouldn't us have a 'FWR off topic' section? I hate to imagine what the trolls would make of that!

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 18/12/2014 22:22

I changed my surname (I didn't 'take' DH's BTW, that phrasing fucks me right off). You would think patriarchy could cope. No, I get rage inducing cards addressed to Mr and Mrs S TantrumofDoom. Mr and Mrs TantrumofDoom is fine. As is Mr S and Mrs P TantrumofDoom. You put me second, and then you give me an initial that is not my fucking initial. If I'm going second, shouldn't I get the initial since I'm next to it?

Sorry, just read back that langue. May be more annoyed than I normally admit.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 18/12/2014 22:25

Oub, not off topic at all. It's all about unreasonable expectations. Women are hardly strangers to those! Turn your phone off and pretend you don't exist maybe?

Please no spoilers for The Fall. We haven't had the second series in the US yet.

I am all for burning the Envelopes of Patriarchy. I haven't had any yet this Christmas. Most of my friends and relatives were browbeaten into compliance learned to adapt years ago.

OublietteBravo · 18/12/2014 22:29

I pretty much stick to The FWR and the exercise boards. The 'rest of MN' can be a strange and terrifying place especially AIBU?

PuffinsAreFictitious · 18/12/2014 22:32

I very occasionally post in chat. AIBU is VVVU.

If a topic comes up that interests me in chat, like the endless 'well, I tell my daughters never to go out at night or get drunk, which will keep them safe from rape' threads, I tend to go and drip sarcasm at them Xmas Grin

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 18/12/2014 22:34

See I just rant all over the shop. though I probably shouldn't.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 18/12/2014 22:36

I post here, AIBU, Chat, History Club, Higher Education, very occasionally S&B ... Blush

scone, I feel as if 'Envelopes of Patriarchy' should be a euphemism for something.
