Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Why can 'practical feminism' not be a sub-board? Or thread?

I've been doing some marathon catch-up reading and I know there is a line of argument that theory and practice are indivisible etc but it seems to me that such a section would answer a different demand.

I'm sure there is loads of stuff that has been said that I haven't read though.

Can some of you just answer that point for me? Thanks Smile

sorry frau - as puffins says it's easy to overlook when the board moves quickly, but that's not a good excuse particularly in light of recent criticisms of this board. so glad you stuck with it though Flowers

Grin I am Borg

(guys, I know - I never meant to criticise, I just meant it as an example, honestly!)

FrauHelga · 05/11/2014 15:56

And that's a general guys, which is a word I use often, and not a biologically guys or in any way implying anything about your biological sex.

FrauHelga · 05/11/2014 15:56

Grin I'm in a hole. I'll stop digging.

I have a concrete example for you.

A thread today on Chat or AIBU or somewhere was called something like 'Bollocks I don't believe'. I skimmed it an hour ago.

It is full of 'hilarious' MC memes such as 'oh Jemima much prefers kale and melon to chocolate. '

But included in there a couple of times is 'Toddlers using the word vulva'.

It is me (and a couple of other posters) they are lampooning. It refers to a 'what should my DD call her bits' thread a few weeks ago. Several posters refused to believe I taught my toddlers that word. Loads of posters refused to believe what the word meant.

I would have loved to have rerun that conversation in a 'halfway house'. Hopefully lots of us would have.

If you can teach a toddler penis, why not vulva?

Confused

Well quite Helga but an improbable number of women were announcing that vulva was a 'vile' or horrible word.

The threads;

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/2227187-Things-people-say-that-make-you-think-what-bollocks

I think it is illustrative of why this request for a less theory-centred place on FWR crops up.

FrauHelga · 05/11/2014 22:41

I really don't think my blood pressure would stand those threads right now Arsenic.

Smile
ArsenicSoup · 05/11/2014 22:41

ut it might have created bad feeling or be designated a TAAT, though?

Exactly and, again, there are many people who are wary of 'main' FWR.

OP posts:
ArsenicSoup · 05/11/2014 22:42

Best give them a miss then. They are there for reference if anyone is interested.

Tempers did get a bit frayed in the end Grin

YonicScrewdriver · 05/11/2014 22:47

Hmm, but the pub is a long running set of threads. Other boards have them eg just shagging, crepeys etc

We could maybe have a full intro post for each pub though?

YonicScrewdriver · 05/11/2014 22:51

But sorry I missed your first post there, Frau.

I suppose what I suspect Buffy (I wasn't the OP on that one - or lots of them) is that there is a fair to middling sized group of posters who would like somewhere other than chat to have those conversations in the first place.

Or debrief them after a sfae interval Smile

OP posts:
ArsenicSoup · 05/11/2014 22:58

I'll have a look at just shagging (think i might have wandered in there once Confused ) and crepeys tomorrow Yonic

Iirc There was a male journalist who wrote one of those tedious pieces about MN where they go on a couple of AIBU threads and draw conclusions from that. He happened to stumble across the just shagging thread and was Shock that a group of women who wanted to get pregnant were talking about having sex with their male partner Hmm

YonicScrewdriver · 05/11/2014 23:05

You do recall correctly, Petula!

Arsenic, can't find any in active right now but here's the xmas bargains thread which I guess is fairly self explanatory but has weird titles and a lot of recurring posters who are carrying on conversations.

I think there's also Swagger Inn and a few others that I can't remember.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/Christmas/2225458-Christmas-bargain-thread-15-I-need-a-poo-holder-for-nespresso-poos-anyone-seen-a-bargain

ArsenicSoup · 05/11/2014 23:06

It was probably the sheer determination that scared him Petula. They are quite formidable. To a male (tabloid?) journalist they'd be the stuff of nightmare Smile

Plus all the unbreakable acronyms and in-jokes.. I imagine he was rather threatened and cross and emasculated.

This place needs an anthropologist.

Do you think he went home and checked home and checked his partner's internet history? Grin

Thanks Yonic. I'll have a look.
