Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Why can 'practical feminism' not be a sub-board? Or thread?

I've been doing some marathon catch-up reading and I know there is a line of argument that theory and practice are indivisible etc but it seems to me that such a section would answer a different demand.

I'm sure there is loads of stuff that has been said that I haven't read though.

Can some of you just answer that point for me? Thanks Smile

Arsenic, you kinda do need everyone to agree what The Shallow End is for, otherwise we might accidentally go and hegemonise all over it Grin

ArsenicSoup · 04/11/2014 18:29

You could just mooch in and out being helpful in an ad hoc way Buffy. Or don't you do ad hoc?

I'm really worried I've suggested something that you envision as needing rotas.

ArsenicSoup · 04/11/2014 18:30

Instinctively hegemonise?

OP posts:
ArsenicSoup · 04/11/2014 18:32

Oh you said accidentally.

Does for anyone 'not ready' for the 'main pool' work?

OP posts:
YonicScrewdriver · 04/11/2014 18:33

Err, dunno

Grin

But I guess I mean that, if we are excluding academic speak and pointy ness and things that posters say are otherwhere on FWR, then we all need to know that's the case so that's why it needs to be pow wowed, which I guess you are doing here and on the site stuff thread.

Really hope that goes ok.

ArsenicSoup · 04/11/2014 18:35

I see what you mean.

At the moment, I don't feel as though these issues have been addressed in a meaningful way and if the original FWR regulars mooch in and start being "helpful" (in our minds) we'll just have more of the same.

I suppose that's why the idea of 'practical feminism' came to me. It conveys something but it's too wooly.

Can we say things like outwith the spirit of the enterprise

Personally I can only manage six letter words. Max. I'm sure other posters will be more intelligent, though Wink

The rest of it? Try it and see?

OP posts:

But Yonic's right there have to be a few 'No jargon, be gentle' type rules....

We need some of the people who said they would like to post in FWR to comment really.

Should be fine.

I'll just stand well back.

And Buffy, while you're here - I love your posting style - please don't change. You're not the problem.

UptoapointLordCopper · 04/11/2014 19:04

Coming late to the thread - I post quite regularly in the pub thread, read most other FWR thread - that's how I learn. If I don't understand anything I look it up (but then that's how I work). I have learned so much, not least from just chatting on the pub thread - it's given me the terminology and the right words and the courage to challenge stuff in RL. Smile

And Buffy don't you go trying to be different. Smile

ArsenicSoup · 04/11/2014 19:04

I do see what you mean Buffy and I am thinking about it while I chop carrots.

"We already do similar with the pub, a thread along those lines, but with more actual info rather than goats and cannons?"

I think the answer could be something like this.

I actually think "jokes" like cannons and goats are more offputting than harsh analysis. I think it is kind of bad form to carry jokes out of context into new threads

PetulaGordino · 05/11/2014 14:45

i think you're probably right there ros

FrauHelga · 05/11/2014 14:46

I nearly posted this earlier and didn't, because I'm now posting in "the pub"

I didn't post there because it seemed cliquey. Like it was a club and I wouldn't be welcome. I did a "stick my head in" post and it sat for ages, and other new members were being welcomed and my post was being ignored.

TBH it did make me feel pretty crap.

Then I got over myself, and tried again. Grin which I think, so far, is OK well you haven't all booted me out yet

PuffinsAreFicticious · 05/11/2014 15:21

One of the things with the pub, Frau, is that it's pretty fast moving and, if you aren't online when something's posted, it can get shunted off your screen quite quickly. I'm sure it wasn't personal, as you're joining in now and all is well. I do get what you're saying though and I'm glad you persevered Smile
