I need to step away from the computer, switch off the news and stop expressing my frustrations to people who do not and will never get it. I need a break from my feminism. I am just so sad about it all. I know it is temporary and i will be back but i can't focus on this stuff any more for now. Anyone else reaching saturation point?

Knots Landing?! I had no idea it was so compelling Grin.

I'm quite enjoying the updated reimagining of Prisoner Cell Block H, Wentworth on C5. It passes the Bechdel Test anyway...

Scott and Bailey is fantastic. I love all the scenes where the women are discussing work stuff in the loos - very realistic and woman-centric

Sally Wainwright is excellent. She did an episode of desert island discs recently

Gah phone keeps posting

Morecrack Happy Valley was very well written and brilliant characters but some scenes were extremely violent in a way that I struggled with. She also writes Last Tango in Halifax which again has fab characters

@Pepper

It's as relevant as your boyfriend-in-the-secret-service fantasy. You've never heard of 24 but you know Keifer Sutherland's in it? Um what?

If you're husband/bf/whatever was in the CIA/MI5/MI6/whatever and you actually outed him on mums.net - I'm not even gonna finish that sentence, it's so ridiculous.

You made me laugh though!

xx

Off of even the TV topic, but has anyone seen "Must Love Dogs"? It's kind of a romantic comedy film, but it is more real... more grown up. I keep meaning to mention to people who might like it.

TV wise, I rather still like to revisit the Gilmore Girls from time to time - seven series, mother who named her daughter after herself and runs a business. Primarily about mother daughter relationship, and the relationship with her own mum. Some really fast witty dialogue.

A feminist friend keeps recommending Bones to me, but I haven't seen it as I don't have sky.

messyisthenewtidy · 31/10/2014 07:01

Spirited, you can get all the seasons of Bones on Lovefilm. I love Bones because there are great female characters who are doing amazingly clever things and get on well with each other and the men around them. The relationship between Sealy Booth (male FBI) and Tempe/Bones(female forensic anthropologist) is full of mutual support and respect.

What I also like is the way that it is the main female character Bones who is the lovable eccentric scientist, on the spectrum, and completely unable to understand the nuances in social interaction which is so often a stereotype reserved for men. The touchy feely person is her partner Booth.

Only thing I don't like is the glamourous beauty that seems to be a prerequisite for all the supporting female characters but you can't have everything.

Love Smile Olivia's posts though. I think we need a sticky for them so we can link to them whenever feminists are accused of being the ones who hate men. I suspect her husband is quite aware of her covert power games and quite happily sits back letting her think she has all the indirect power. He's probably on a chat forum somewhere saying "the secret lads is to let the wife think that she can manipulate you". Grin

I think she missed the point that feminism isn't about wresting all the power from men (directly or indirectly) but about sharing it. Now there's a radical thought ....

Blimey you lot are all patient. And clever. Wish I was.

As it is... Olivia, I'm a sahm. At the moment. I have actually spent more time being the main breadwinner than a sahm. Since dh is it now in many ways that does mean his job comes first. For the rest... to coin a phrase, 'Wanna fight?' Grin

You have been lucky you silly girl. Congratulations. I even wish it continues for you. It's great that there are some women who have never had to eat shit somewhere.

Can't you even see the rest of us?

BOFster · 01/11/2014 14:21

I'm watching that Scott And Bailey on iplayer now- really enjoying it, thanks for the tip!

BOFster · 01/11/2014 14:33

It was brilliant- I may even have shed a tear at the end Grin
