Why are feminists so threatened by the MRA movement?

LaVoixDeLaRaison · 09/09/2014 18:47

When I was at university, the Gender Equality society (of which I was a member) chose to rename itself the Feminist society, arguing that the only way equality could be achieved was by focusing on women's issues. This led some other students to set up an MRA group, which was met with some resistance from the feminists. On this very board I see commenters angrily referring to MRAs as if they are all members of an evil homogeneous group.

Isn't it possible that men and women both suffer oppression from society in different ways? That the levels of this oppression are not necessarily equal, but are still important if we are to achieve equality? I often see feminists agreeing with certain 'male issues' (e.g. media stereotypes, elevated male suicide rate), but suggesting that feminism has other priorities, and if they want to do something about these issues then they should make their own groups. Why do they get criticized when they do exactly that? Better still, wouldn't feminism be better off if it didn't alienate so many men (and women, focused on a wider range of issues, and stopped pitting the sexes against one another?

tbh i think that's shutting the door after the horse has bolted kate

the locking might work though? so the posts remain but the thread will drop out of activity

LineRunner · 10/09/2014 16:27

Bugger.

LineRunner · 10/09/2014 16:27

Can you just lock it for a bit?

Hakluyt · 10/09/2014 16:28

I reckon we can cope...........

Yes, can't you just lock this one? It's not like they won't wander around anyway when the link doesn't work.

Incidentally, have you ever thought about some sort of delay between registering for MN and being able to post on FWR? I know there are reasons for not doing it for the whole site (desperate mum wants bfing advice, doesn't want to wait 48 hours, etc, etc), but could it be limited to certain boards? I doubt that they have a long attention span.

he;s over there crowing about having proved his point

(ignorign the fact that many here are calling for it to remain, so it's not the regular feminists who want this deleted and the OP banned)

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived · 10/09/2014 16:33

Ok, I'm going to post my link now.

AnnieLobeseder · 10/09/2014 16:34

Kate, I would agree that deleting the thread because of the reddit link is a but late to be useful. Surely if you just don't want people to follow the link for fear of trolly influx you can just change the URL of the thread?

SevenZarkSeven · 10/09/2014 16:34

I Also think it would be great if this could be locked rather than deleted. Smile Smile

LineRunner · 10/09/2014 16:35

Even my 15 year old son says Reddit has gone to shit lately. In fact his exact words were, 'Right wing, racist and tedious'.

PetulaGordino · 10/09/2014 16:35

please kate

i'll go and muster more support for the MNHQ Christmas Gin Appeal idea if it helps

SevenZarkSeven · 10/09/2014 16:35

Also outself really enjoyed your last post there. Excellent illustration Thanks for sharing

Hakluyt · 10/09/2014 16:38

"Well that confirms it, I was banned from Mumsnet and the thread I created is going to be deleted, even though I made no personal attacks on any of the posters, and tried to the best of my ability to ground all my arguments in logic and evidence. As some of the posters there have already noted, that rather proves my point about legitimate grievances with modern-day feminism. Either agree entirely with our form of gender equality, or you'll be banned."

MNHQ- please don't delete this thread. If you do, we're playing into their hands.

PetulaGordino · 10/09/2014 16:40

exactly

though the OP is wrong in terms of blame - feminists here are asking for the thread to remain

Where was the logic and evidence?

RowanMumsnet · 10/09/2014 16:43

Hello

Tbh the issue is that a direct link like this - from the Reddit MRA sub-forum directly to FWR, so that all anyone there has to do is click on a link - does honestly make it spectacularly easy for them to come over here and cause loads of work for us havoc.

(Was trying to think of a way to illustrate this and I've come up with that bit in Harry Potter when all the Death Eaters turn up at the wedding reception.)

If they click on a link and all they get is a deleted thread message, yes they could then click around, work out how to sign up and start posting - but it would take that much more determination, and human nature being what it is most of 'em probably wouldn't bother.

Anyways. Seeing as you feel so strongly about it we'll try to work some magic in other ways...

PetulaGordino · 10/09/2014 16:45

yes the wide-eyed innocence and and "i made no personal attacks" stuff is very disingenuous

at least some of them on there are honest and upfront about what they want - a return to C19th structures because it benefits them more than gender equality does

AnnieLobeseder · 10/09/2014 16:45

Thank you for looking into alternatives, Rowan. I don't understand the magic of 'Tinterwe, lLike I suggested up thread, wouldn't changing the URL a bit break the link?

LineRunner · 10/09/2014 16:45

Change the URL?

PetulaGordino · 10/09/2014 16:46

thanks rowan Flowers

ballsballsballs · 10/09/2014 17:18

Poor old sad Mortifying Dickhead and his oh so reasonable arguments.

I take my hat off to all who replied.

CaptChaos · 10/09/2014 17:19
