The old pub now has less than 10 posts to go, so I thought I'd start a new one. The old one can be found here

This is a place for feminist pom pom waving and talking about stuff which might not need a thread for itself.

Fill your boots.

I suggested Eton Mess (she says proudly).

I am very much with you on the non-appeal of crumble and steamed puddings, scone.

Clout in the rhyme is cloth. I think the idea is you're wearing all your clothes at once. Bleugh.

AnnieLobeseder · 05/09/2014 18:41

Just been talking to my mother on Skype. I told her I was meeting up with a bunch of Feminists tomorrow. She did another one of her massive eye rolls and came up with this absolute gem. "Do you and your feminist friends really think you're doing something new, and that no one has tried any of this feminism stuff before?"

Um, no mother, we're well aware that many women have been "trying this feminism thing" for a very long time. What's tragic is that we're still doing it.

Never mind, like I tell the internet trolls, luckily no matter what you think of feminism, it carries on regardless.

I'm loving all the gaming talk on here today. I played wow too for a while. Dp got it when it first came out and was only available in America so we had American accounts for quite a long time, then later on I switched to a European server. The American server seemed a lot nicer and more polite than the European one but that might just have been my particular server or that players used to be polite and nice but changed.

It's horrific that women can be beheaded and still not be dramatic enough to make the news.Sad Sad Sad I'll be avoiding that thread for my own sanity I think.

Dd2 was really excited about going to school this morning but now she says she doesn't want to go. The teacher came to do a home visit and dp says she's lovely, really nice, but dd2 refused to engage at all, she clung to dp and hid her face while looking determinedly in the opposite direction from the teacher. She wouldn't let them take her photo to go on her peg, or say a word. So Monday morning will be fun won't it? Luckily it's our cm taking her, and she doesn't stand for any nonsense so she'll just have to put up with it. I suspect she'll have a great time but she won't talk to any adults.

AnnieLobeseder · 05/09/2014 18:45

Oh, and I've also just found out that my thesis has to be in a week earlier than I thought! So 3 weeks today.

PetulaGordino · 05/09/2014 18:50

my mum has patients who wear almost all their clothes without changing them from september through to april, they are usually elderly, vulnerable and don't have enough money for the heating Sad

PetulaGordino · 05/09/2014 18:51

oh bloody hell annie! is that going to be ok for you? i suppose at least you get an extra week to recover afterwards?!

BriarRainbowshimmer · 05/09/2014 19:00

Same. I don't even know what to say, it's too horrific.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 05/09/2014 19:06

"Do you and your feminist friends really think you're doing something new, and that no one has tried any of this feminism stuff before?"

Wow. Only mothers could manage that level of put down.

But thesis deadline?! WTF?

Indeed, WTF! Because I actually do the work at a govt Institute, and a research council pays my grant, the Institute actually does most of the admin, and the registration at uni is just because I need to be registered somewhere. So previously we always had to do two sets of reports, one for the Institute, one for the uni at all critical timepoints, and they both had their own sets of requirements. A couple of years ago the new Head of Postgrad Stuff said this was ridiculous and that we should just stick to the uni requirements. And last time I spoke to her she said that yes, it was definitely my uni submission date that counted even though I started at the Institute a week before I was officially registered at the uni.

But now it transpires that the research council has said it counts as a fail against the Institute if I haven't submitted by their date, and that has serious implications for funding, so Institute date it is. 26 September.

And I'm away at a conference in Copenhagen from 21-26 Sept. Awesome.

I need wine.

Thanks Buffy, but it's fine. I'm on revisions now anyway. It's just a matter of getting the revisions done and all the chapters collated. It really is very do-able.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 05/09/2014 19:33

Oh, that is crap. Sad

Sorry, annie.

It sounds as if you are very organized, though. But I would echo buffy. Believe it or not, I can proof other people's work, and I can certainly provide a sounding board for ranting.

And, for now, Wine.

AnnieLobeseder · 05/09/2014 19:35

I'm sure you lovely ladies are very proficient at proofreading, but I already have a team doing it (I'm very lucky) and my supervisor is getting my revisions back to me faster than I can write them! It's just annoying that it's going to slightly ruin my trip to Copenhagen. I had to choose between Copenhagen or another conference in Canada a week later - I wish I'd chosen Canada now!!

LRDtheFeministDragon · 05/09/2014 19:40

Mmm, yes, I bet. Sad

But I guess at least Copenhagen might brighten up what would otherwise be a horrible last few days?

OublietteBravo · 05/09/2014 19:49

Slightly off-topic, but can I just say that I love Copenhagen (I was there this time last week).

Good luck with getting your thesis finished off - it is an amazing feeling when you finally get it submitted.

scallopsrgreat · 05/09/2014 20:06

Oh good luck Annie. Sounds like a nightmare. I am always very tight to deadlines lazy so to suddenly lose a week like that would have been a death knell.

See where I some from clout means one of two things: to hit someone, usually playfully but not always and to have some power or authority. There is also clout shooting which is like long distance archery. Never knew it meant cloth too.

OublietteBravo · 05/09/2014 20:29

DS has to state who his hero is and why as part of his homework. He says he doesn't have one. Any suggestions for a feminist icon with a story that would appeal to an 8 year old?

scallopsrgreat · 05/09/2014 20:36

And I meant to say how on earth did I miss a thread about desserts. Only my favourite thing to talk about (after feminism and my children. Obviously!).

Oubliette - how about Ellen McArthur. Not a feminist icon per say but excellent female role model?

You will all be able to sleep easier tonight. I've managed to charge the iPad. DH on one of his many many nanny many purchases bought a USB/Apple connector and that's charged it. Quicker than the Apple charger too Hmm.

vezzie · 05/09/2014 20:37

I heard that the may in that expression is the hawthorn blossom (not the month) - so you rely on what the plants are doing, rather than the calendar

(that pearl of wisdom was from my mother who also says "kissing is in season when gorse is in flower" - I am sure you all know when gorse is in flower)

LRDtheFeministDragon · 05/09/2014 20:42

Ellen McArthur is awesome.

TeWiSavesTheDay · 05/09/2014 20:47

The new MN mobile is making it hard to link to things! But I would look at child hero's - yousef fighting for girls rights to be educated.

Or this girl www.cbsnews.com/news/calif-hs-student-devises-possible-cancer-cure/

I think it's a good one to Google and see who comes up that neither of you have heard of.

TeWiSavesTheDay · 05/09/2014 20:48

And good luck Annie!

PetulaGordino · 05/09/2014 20:51

oubliette i was in copenhagen this time last week too!

OublietteBravo · 05/09/2014 21:03

Petula - wow, what a coincidence (you weren't in Wagamama were you?!).
