The old pub now has less than 10 posts to go, so I thought I'd start a new one. The old one can be found here

This is a place for feminist pom pom waving and talking about stuff which might not need a thread for itself.

Fill your boots.

Awesome work, Petula!

AnnieLobeseder · 04/09/2014 23:10

My university was kind enough to send me a nice "you have one month to go" email today. Just in case that little fact had escaped my attention.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/09/2014 23:11

Ooh! What did you make of it then, abland.

As a (semi-decent) paleographer I have isshooes which I've moaned about on MN before, but I loved the plot and I liked Peter and Harriet much more than in her previous ones.

I liked the bits about the woman academic and the sexist dons.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/09/2014 23:11

Eek, annie.

You will be fine.

ABlandAndDeadlyCourtesy · 04/09/2014 23:12

Do you want a pom pom thread like Buffy?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/09/2014 23:12

Oh, yes, we can get out pom poms.

AnnieLobeseder · 04/09/2014 23:14

It's probably a bit early for pom poms. Maybe in the last week. But it's a lovely offer, thank you!

PetulaGordino · 04/09/2014 23:15

Or deploy a pointy stick if you need to be chased of MN and back to work?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/09/2014 23:15

Last week it is. Smile

ABlandAndDeadlyCourtesy · 04/09/2014 23:24

Agree, Peter and Harriet seemed more believeable - like JPW was writing from herself rather than trying to write them as an arms' length creation.

I thought that one plot strand was finished very well but the other rather rushed. The method thing was cute if a little over-apologetic. I liked the ancient book/ancient grievance theme.

Not many quibbles from a feminist angle; the two characters who refused to speak to Harriet were in the right, really, as he held the office, not her.

It stretched credibility that the Shrewsbury dons wouldn't have known about St George as Harriet wouldn't have held her title otherwise and as for May bumps being explained to Peter - yikes!

One day I will write "Winifred - The Lost Denver" though - she's even more of an absent daughter than Emma Geller-Greene...

LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/09/2014 23:29

Yes, and didn't the Shrewsbury dons meet St George and at least one of them got quite friendly with him, so you would think they would have heard.

I think bumps being explained to Peter is one of those bits where we're meant to laugh? I hope so!

I'd read 'Winifred - The Lost Denver'. Grin

ABlandAndDeadlyCourtesy · 05/09/2014 00:02

Yeah, I did wonder if the junior doing the explaining just randomly thought he should be polite and do so - but Peter's Balliolity is so bone deep, surely said junior would realise!

As they obviously stayed in touch with Harriet over the improbably long with none of then dying or retiring years, it's a pretty major thing that would have surely come up in the 15+ years since the war.

WinifredTheLostDenver · 05/09/2014 00:07

Monday
No-one seems to know I'm here.

Tuesday
Even my family are blanking me.

Wednesday
Hello? Hello?

Thursday
Maybe it's me?

Friday
I see dead people. Walking around like regular people.

Cousin Matthew, for one....

Grin
LRDtheFeministDragon · 05/09/2014 00:28

Grin Bailliolity is such a Sayers kind of term.

Poor Winifred.

I think people did stay in touch. I know someone who was an early undergrad at Oxbridge (forget which). She would have been there in the 30s, I think. And her people stayed in touch - she celebrated her 80th birthday at the college, I remember (and she left me her unfinished novel in her will, which is the most romantic bequest I'll ever get).

But yes, you'd think they'd therefore know about St George! Especially since in Gaudy Night, the porter at Christ Church is surprised Harriet doesn't know of a minor, non-fatal accident that was in the papers.

LineRunner · 05/09/2014 00:32

I can't sleep and I heard there may be pom poms.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 05/09/2014 00:35

Hello!

It's good to 'see' you here. How's life going?

LineRunner · 05/09/2014 00:40

My DD is off to university shortly! Doesn't seem that long ago that I was swilling beer in a student union bar myself.

I am going to miss her.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 05/09/2014 00:43

Oh, gosh - that is a rite of passage! Is she near enough to visit often?

CaptChaos · 05/09/2014 00:48

Good luck LineRunner's DD!

Hope she has a fantastic time!

OP posts:
LineRunner · 05/09/2014 00:54

About four hours away. But she is quite independent tbh. And then it will just be me and my DS who is turning into quite a promising historian. Smile He is also pretty articulate on gender analysis which ain't bad for a 15 year old. He says it's because he's been brought up with me banging on about it all the time...

LineRunner · 05/09/2014 00:55

Hey Capt. And thanks. It's strange waving my daughter off into the world.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 05/09/2014 00:56

Your DS sounds awesome. Smile

And I join chaos in wishing your DD a fantastic time.

Zazzles007 · 05/09/2014 01:01

Hi All. New to FWR and have been following the pub for the last few weeks, as well as dipping my toe into a few threads.

LineRunner · 05/09/2014 01:04

Hi Zazzles. What kind of topics interest you?

Zazzles007 · 05/09/2014 01:36

Hmm, all sorts of things - have been posting on the gaming and misogyny thread, as a female gamer who has realised over the last 12 months, just how much misogyny there is in gaming. It has lead me to researching the games I buy very closely for their misogynistic content, and avoiding (at least) the worst of them. Unfortunately, misogyny in games (as in life) is not completely avoidable at this time point.

The recent threads on Peter Nunn and Anita Sarkeesian have really sparked my interest as well. I think it is very, very important that women's voice be heard in this world.
