"sex with 10 men old enough to be their grandfather per day"

Men (and some women and couples) of all ages buy sex, it isn't just old men in trenchcoats. And I think 10 a day is a bit of a stretch of the imagination.

"Give sex workers a genuine choice, between real alternatives, and if they still choose sex work then I will respect their personal agency"

Most do. If you count "real alternatives" as working in a crappy minimum wage job 40 hours a week.

But Delurk - I think there is a difference between 'against clients being criminalized' as a practical stance to ensure the safety of those currently stuck in prostitution and the risk run by Amnesty supporting decriminalisation from a human rights perspective.

Tag Amnesty onto a message about decriminalising the purchase of sex and you are implicitly (and potentially explicitly) saying 'it is a human right to be allowed to buy sex'

To me this is like taking up the cause for sweatshop workers rights:

  1. All workers deserve the same labour rights - safe environment and fair pay
  2. But in the short term we need to keep people buying cheap clothes because it at least keeps work available
  3. Therefore Amnesty will argue for the rights to buy cheap clothes
  4. It is a human right to buy a t-shirt from primark for £2

It also needs to be said, then, that on one thread M said she would agree with Swedish Model with proper exit strategies.

It also needs to be said that the punter on the thread I linked to may have written 'politely', respectfully, even. But the content of his posts was anything but respectful. Paying to fuck survivors of childhood abuse and nervous women who are crying is not respectful to women. It's just paying to fuck people who don't want to, and then getting to walk away without a care in the world.

Womeen who have left prostitution tell a very different story to the "sex workers" posting here.

Because of the links and the way comments have been made, I strongly suspect the "sex workers" here are the same people I see all over the net under different aliases, and who turn up at every conference where this issue is being debated.

"Swedish Model with proper exit strategies"

As has been already pointed out, Sweden doesn't have many exit strategies. It's all for show and PR.

And the swedish model isn't necessary to have exit strategies. Exit strategies can also exist alongside legalization or decrim.

teyitemp · 15/04/2014 17:48

"Women who have left prostitution"

What "women"? Rachel Moran? She's just one woman and many doubt her claims.

teyitemp · 15/04/2014 17:50

" that on one thread M said she would agree with Swedish Model with proper exit strategies."

Migsy? I have seen her say more than once she is against the Swedish model. And I have seen her say she would like the law against prostitutes working together to be abolished.

(Under the swedish model prostitutes still commit a crime if they work together for safety. They can still be charged with "running a brothel" if they work together under this fabulous swedish model).

Poverty affects both genders (and most men generally don't have the option of sexwork at all so often end up homeless begging on streets and going through bins for food).

Instead of targeting consenting adults who engage in paid for sexual services why not focus on poverty?

Anything to avoid looking at and thinking about the sexual exploitation of one sex class by the other, eh?

teyitemp · 15/04/2014 18:22

I point out poverty affects both genders and all of a sudden you attempt to put a load of words in my mouth?

teyitemp · 15/04/2014 18:23

"You think it's fine that men tend to be the ones with economic power"

Don't want to derail but isn't it women who do more spending than men? Haven't you noticed so many adverts are targeted towards females because they know that's who will be spending the money?

teyitemp you've forgotten:

  • some women just like having a lot of sex
  • all women I've paid to have sex on say they like it
teyitemp · 15/04/2014 18:35

I don't think a worldwide stat which is skewed by the millionaires and billionaires in the world is representative of everyday people in the UK.
