Q Do you think it is right for prostitutes working together (even if there is only 2 of them) to be charged with a crime of "running a brothel"?

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 15/04/2014 18:48

No, I don't, as it goes.

But, then, I also understand why the laws on brothel keeping are to prevent exploitation of the vulnerable.

I love the thing about women spending all the money.

Yes doing the weekly shop and keeping the children clothed and shod is the very definition of extreme wealth Grin

FloraFox · 15/04/2014 18:51

teyitemp are you a punter?

NiceTabard · 15/04/2014 18:55

Why do so many "legalise it all" posters on these threads baulk at the numbers of men a prostitute might see in a day?

I don't really understand that. There seems to be an odd sort of squeamishness from those who are saying it's all fun and games amongst consenting adults so what's all the fuss.

Squeamishness at the thought of heterosexual men selling their orifices to other men.
Squeamishness at the thought of a prostitute having 8 / 10 / however many clients a day.

I find this really strange and think TBH it says something quite telling.

"But, then, I also understand why the laws on brothel keeping are to prevent exploitation of the vulnerable."

But the ones who get charged are the prostitutes when all they are doing is working together. This is the case even in Sweden.

"Why do so many "legalise it all" posters on these threads baulk at the numbers of men a prostitute might see in a day?"

Here is a quote from
maggiemcneill.wordpress.com/2013/03/21/dutch-threat/

"They asked me where Patricia* worked. They wanted to work where she worked because she made such good money. She had sometimes seven clients in one day, whereas if you do well on the Wallen, you might get four.”"

Patricia was a women who pretended to be a prostitute but was revealed to be a fraud.

teyitemp · 15/04/2014 19:02

So that's 4 clients a day "if you are doing well".

NT I agree with you there's a squeamishness. I think the punters like to pretend to themselves the women are just making a little money for a few hours at a time. Sexy fun. Expecially if they expect the "girlfriend experience". Ideally, the want to imagine the Brooke Magnanti type of once a night whenever she feels like it. The women in prostitution who blog and say they are the voices everyone should listen to perpetuate this and are on twitter talking about travelling here or there to see a few clients.

The reality for lots of women of having a constant stream of men must be desired by some men (hence the German brothels with men lined up behind a curtain) but even they would probably realise that most normal people would think that is grim.

The "two women sharing a flat" is a myth. If brothel-keeping were legalised or decriminalised, it would be the German situation. It's the only one that makes commercial sense. Every business maximises profits by sweating its assets. In the case of brothel-keeping, sweating the assets means women having as many men a day as is possible.

FloraFox · 15/04/2014 19:09

Patricia is that transwoman who lied about being a prostitute? Why do you keep bringing that up? It's a complete red herring.

Are you a punter, tey?

teyitemp · 15/04/2014 19:11

"The "two women sharing a flat" is a myth."

It's not a myth. Even just 2 women sharing a flat constitutes a "brothel" and become prone to police raids.

From my last post it appears business just isn't booming enough to get 10+ or whatever clients in a day. It appears "on a good day" you "might" get 4 clients.

teyitemp · 15/04/2014 19:13

"Patricia" claimed to have numerous clients a day, which led to other (real) prostitutes wanting to know where she worked to get so many clients.

NiceTabard · 15/04/2014 19:14

But what does it matter whether it's 4 or 7? Saying oh it would never be 7 it would be more like 4 - why is it important to make that point? Because higher numbers make some people feel squeamish. Because they want to think they're special snowflakes, not just one of many.

Pathetic, TBH.

Maybe because having [insert huge number] of clients a day is a myth?

as you can see, austerity policies affect women more than men

And the typical rate for a UK escort is about £150 (and upwards) per hour. Why would 100 clients a day be necessary if a woman is earning that?

I said I wasn't going to comment again, but And the typical rate for a UK escort is about £150 (and upwards) per hour.

Really? I wonder why so very very many 'reviews' on Pnet are by 'men' who paid far less than this. The average seems to be around £40-50. So, after paying for the flat, paying for advertising, fictional 'debts', food, transport and taking out the % the woman gives her 'boyfriend', it doesn't seem so very unlikely that 7-10 'clients' doesn't seem so very unlikely.

I find it really strange that we are constantly told to listen to sex workers. That it's only their view that counts. It only ever seems to count if it goes along with the view that men have a right to pay to have sex on women who don't want it though. Any dissenting voices are 'proved' to be lying, even the woman who was on a previous thread gets the 'we believe her, but...she's wrong treatment all the time.
