The vulnerable ones don't necessarily speak out - ever - there's no law that says they have to. Sometimes, just having survived it/escaped it is enough.

Sometimes they don't ever survive it or escape it.

Grennie · 15/04/2014 23:57

And yet we are supposed to take on faith that a small group of women who are constantly on twitter, on social media, and travel to every conference in the UK where prostitution is described as exploitative, as somehow representative of women in the sex industry?

The last point is no joke. I don't have the opportunity to go to mnay things, but even I now recognise the "sex workers" who always turn up, and others have told me they see them at every single conference they go to. And they seem to live on twitter.

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 16/04/2014 00:09

What an absolute cock the average punter is. Do they all think they're fucking Billie Piper??

FloraFox · 16/04/2014 00:20

Sabrina I wouldn't be surprised if they do. They seem to think as well that they are all earning so much money that nothing else matters.

migsymoo · 16/04/2014 01:00

I'm glad that this has happened. I know selling sex was legal before but to completely decriminalise every aspect makes me feel safer and better about the whole thing. Hopefully it will stop some of the violence that happens in the industry too.

OldLadyKnowsSomething · 16/04/2014 02:53

Thank you, Migsy, and I hope you weren't offended when I mentioned you last night? If you were/are, I apologise wholeheartedly.

Are you any further towards moving on towards your desire to nursing training? Your "friend" really isn't a friend, I agree with everyone else here on that.

Have a look at www.saafe.info for better ways to work, if you decide to stay in sexwork while your child is young.

teyitemp · 16/04/2014 15:14

www.buzzfeed.com/tabathaleggett/what-is-it-really-like-to-work-in-a-brothel

What is it really like to work in a brothel?

Grennie · 16/04/2014 15:19

A pimp telling us what it is like to work at a brothel? I assume the women quoted were interviewed in front of him? Yes we are going to get a really accurate picture then

teyitemp · 16/04/2014 15:25

One says she has sex with between 5 and 10 men a week.

Doesn't match up to your assumption than prostitutes see a huge number of clients a day.

Grennie · 16/04/2014 15:26

That woman is also the "girlfriend" of her multi millionaire pimp.

teyitemp · 16/04/2014 15:29

What else is in the news? How do police treat foreign prostitutes in Norway (which also has the nordic model). They get deported, despite the fact they weren't there illegally.

translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tv2.no%2Fa%2F5453397

So it's legal to sell sex in Norway. But if you aren't a white local woman you get kicked out the country even if you were there legally. Oh how lovely.

As far as I know about this case, the women had no right to work in Norway. They had legal permission for permanent residence in Italy and travelled to Norway as visitors/tourists. If they had been waitresses who had reported a rape, they would have been deported. This is sadly why illegal immigrants are so vulnerable. But it has nothing to do with the Nordic Model.

And sending them back to a country they might have escaped from because it was possibly unsafe is going to help them how? Woudn't this be a deterrent for non-local prostitutes in Nordic-model countries to report crimes committed against them?

teyitemp · 16/04/2014 16:02

As far as I know the UK doesn't just deport prostitutes who aren't local.

Why would Italy be unsafe for them to go back to?

Grennie · 16/04/2014 16:12

I think you are simply throwing examples at us and hoping we don't actually read the links and understand them. It is clear these women have permanent residency in Italy. If prostitution was decriminalised, they would still have been deported.

Illegal immigrants are only not deported if they are claiming asylum, or trafficked. The link you provided said they were not trafficked. And they were not claiming asylum. So the case is totally irrelevant.

I suspect teyitemp is a pimp, or in the parlance a "manager" or "sex worker rights activist".

migsymoo · 16/04/2014 16:27

Buffy, the majority of people who sell sex are women and I don't think anyone could argue with that. Why? Well from my experience men seem to have urges that most women don't have. A punter once told me that he was horny during his lunch break at work so decided to book a girl he liked the look of online, that girl just happened to be me. I don't know any women who have such strong sexual urges.

I suppose people choose selling sex over destitution because who wouldn't when it came to feeding and housing their kids? Yes for women who have kids with little or no qualifications there are jobs out there but they are few and far between. Again debt is probably a major issue too. It's a quick way to earn money and for people who risk serious consequences by not paying their debt it becomes an attractive option.

I don't know how anyone would tackle these issues because as long as there are men out there prostitution will always exist.

Thanks and no I wasn't offended. I have looked into all the websites that people suggested but I feel I'm not in a place to be able to leave. It will take guts and I don't have that inner strength at the min. My self esteem is at a really low point, this is because of other issues, so I would feel even worse if I had to uproot my baby and move away on my own.

teyitemp · 16/04/2014 16:28

It seems Norway were keen to be rid of them. They were quickly deported and not even allowed to finish medical treatment they were receiving for injuries sustained from the violent robbery they were victims of.

teyitemp · 16/04/2014 16:30

I would also recommend the website OLNS suggested:

www.saafe.info/

It isn't "pimp run" or anything it's a site put together by escorts for escorts.
