Seems like a pretty crap time to be a woman (or a girl)!

Anyone know how true it all is??

I love Braveheart.

The thing there about prima nocte is real, though. Sad Scary.

Badvoc · 01/06/2013 23:04

In china right now girl children are abandoned/terminated simply because of their gender.
There is a book about Jane Parker but I can't remember what it's called...

StuffezLaYoni · 01/06/2013 23:04

Yes that was terrible, you could see the mixed emotions on her face. How terrible to see your baby and feel regret and despair. Sad

LRDtheFeministDragon · 01/06/2013 23:05

Yes. Sad

Elizabeth never mentioned her mother by name.
But she was very good to her Boleyn relatives....her cousins Catherine and Henry Carey, her mothers cousins.
George Boleyn was a deeply religious man.
He would never have committed incest.
It would have damned him in his eyes.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 01/06/2013 23:08

We have always been able to have female heirs in this country. The law that changed now gives females equal rights over males. Meaning an older sister can Inherit over her younger brother.

Badvoc · 01/06/2013 23:09

Oh, and wolf hall and bring up the bodies are excellent too, albeit fiction.
Thomas Cromwell is a fascinating character.
It was he who masterminded the plot to oust Anne Boleyn.

Badvoc · 01/06/2013 23:11

The day Anne miscarried was the day Catherine of Aragon was buried.

StuffezLaYoni · 01/06/2013 23:12

In a slightly non-feminist vein, how nice to be able to watch this without constant ad breaks! Grin

morethanpotatoprints · 01/06/2013 23:12

We think we have it bad now.
What an awful existence for those poor women.

Badvoc · 01/06/2013 23:13

Henry Percy sat on the court that damned Anne.
He collapsed straight after the sentance was pronounced.
Norfolk sat in judgment on his niece and nephew and sent them to their deaths.

StuffezLaYoni · 01/06/2013 23:14

Oh god, just realised her first husband was on the court who decided her to be guilty!

Badvoc · 01/06/2013 23:15

George Boleyn died bravely and espousing the gospel in which he fervently believed.

StuffezLaYoni · 01/06/2013 23:16

Interesting, Badvoc, as during the film he was portrayed IMO as some thoughtless playboy type! I wonder why they did that?

thenightsky · 01/06/2013 23:17

what a disturbing film Sad

Badvoc · 01/06/2013 23:17

The letters by eustace chapuys who was the Spanish ambassador at the time make for interesting reading.
He memorably wrote that Anne had "miscarried of her saviour"
Mary was not with Anne in the tower. But some sources say her daughter Catherine was.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 01/06/2013 23:18

Well ... to be fair, people are going to describe his death according to their perspectives, aren't they? It's not likely he's going to slip in a last-minute 'oh, and btw, I'm a Satanist' bit, is it?

I would love to know if he really was devout and lovely or if there was something else going on. I agree the incest must be nonsense - didn't someone prove that he wasn't even anywhere near here at the cited dates? I forget.

Greythorne · 01/06/2013 23:18

Saggy

I am sure it's a typo....but "gives females equal rights over males"!

Badvoc · 01/06/2013 23:21

He was a fervent reformer, as was Anne.
And no mention of the other men who died accused with them!
Sir Francis Weston
Mark smeaton
Sir Henry Norris - one of Henry's best friends!
And what of John fisher and Thomas more?
So much bloodshed.
And for what?

happyAvocado · 01/06/2013 23:21

on my long commute by car I listen to this book and thoroughly enjoyed it, shame it isn't accurate historically (or so others say)

LRDtheFeministDragon · 01/06/2013 23:22

Yep, but I always wonder how much of the reform was political and how much private convictions. I can imagine people thinking they were onto the new, up-and-coming thing, which would involve a restructuring of society that would suit them. I am only speculating, though.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 01/06/2013 23:23

Oh! I know what I mean!! Grin its late and I'm tired!

scottishmummy · 01/06/2013 23:23

no historical basis,but great movie
have the DVD love it
