Seems like a pretty crap time to be a woman (or a girl)!

Anyone know how true it all is??

It was cardinal Wolsey (in whose household henry percy was at that time) and the earl of Northumberland who put a stop to Anne and Percy's marriage. They married him off to Mary talbot, the daughter of the earl of Shrewsbury. It was a disastrous marriage. Mary talbot appealed twice to the cardinal to have it annulled.
Some say Anne's hatred of Wolsey over the percy affair was what precipitated his eventual downfall.

Badvoc · 01/06/2013 22:38

There is no reason in the historical record to believe that George Boleyn was gay.
He was very unhappy in his marriage, but that was not uncommon.
Henry VIII was a deluded egotist.
I don't think any of his wives loved him.
He was totally unlovable.

AnitaBlake · 01/06/2013 22:40

I don't think the equality thing is beyond the realms, tbh. Its thought one of the reasons her daughter didn't marry was because she wouldn't submit her throne to another. Elizabeth I often referred to herself (in what I have read) as a prince of England. Note the masculine usage.

From what I understand Anne followed Lutheran/protestant teachings. And there were some pretty 'wild ideas' going round.

Italiangreyhound · 01/06/2013 22:40

I could almost see the king mouthing the words 'Send a fruit basket!'

StuffezLaYoni · 01/06/2013 22:42

Paaahahaha @ the fruit basket! Grin

Badvoc, can I be nosy and ask if you studied this period in particular, or just know lots about English history in general?

Italiangreyhound · 01/06/2013 22:43

On Anita I like the idea that her protestant side was making her a feminist! (I'm a Christian).

Poor old Mary but we all know she gets the better end of the stick and is married to Bendict!

Thomas Howard was an utter bastard.
After Mary and Anne he manoeuvred his neice Catherine Howard on the throne.
She was 16.
Mary the last laugh.
She was the only Boleyn child to survive and be happy (eventually)

Badvoc · 01/06/2013 22:44

I am a huge history buff :)
Tudor and renaissance history in particular. I have done a couple of OU courses too.
There are so many great books about the period, if you are interested.

She doesn't end up married to Benedict, but ends up with the much lovelier Eddie Redmayne

Badvoc · 01/06/2013 22:45

...and we are off to visit Alnwick castle in the summer (the ancestral home of the Percy's)

StuffezLaYoni · 01/06/2013 22:46

I might take a look next time I'm in the library, Badvoc. I remember bits from GCSE history but there are woeful gaps in my knowledge!

StuffezLaYoni · 01/06/2013 22:47

Ooh Badvoc I live near there - it's beautiful!

LRDtheFeministDragon · 01/06/2013 22:47

FWIW, there's a history club topic on MN: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/history_club

Though I am enjoying reading this from a feminist perspective too, it's really interesting.

StuffezLaYoni · 01/06/2013 22:48

Shit I just realised I gave a plot spoiler a couple of posts ago. Sorry!!

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 01/06/2013 22:52

It's almost as historically inaccurate as Braveheart and Pearl Harbour!

mrsfiddymont · 01/06/2013 22:55

Stuffez, Mary did marry Carey but he died of the sweating sickness, she later married Stafford.

Badvoc · 01/06/2013 22:56

I would recommend;
Mary Boleyn the infamous whore
The life and death of Anne Boleyn by Eric Ives
Mary; England's first queen
Elizabeth's women
Happy reading! :)
Henry poisoned everyone he had any dealings with...his family, friends and the woman he treated so badly.
Worst if all IMO was what he did to his children (both legitimate and not).
Poor Mary was left an ill and mentally fragile woman.
Edward was a cold and emotionless boy.
And Elizabeth....well, she was a deeply flawed human being. She had the worst traits of both her parents. Paranoid, cruel, vengeful and emotionally distant.
They were all Henry's victims.

mrsfiddymont · 01/06/2013 22:56

Agree with saggy Grin.

susiedaisy · 01/06/2013 22:58

Ooh I'm watching pearl harbour now didn't realise 3000 people diedSad

StuffezLaYoni · 01/06/2013 22:59

The infamous whore one sounds interesting - that's first on the list!

mrsfiddymont · 01/06/2013 23:01

The Lady in the Tower, the fall of Anne Boleyn is also very good. This and the infamous whore both by Alison Weir.

Italiangreyhound · 01/06/2013 23:01

I wonder how many women have given birth to a girl and felt sad she was not a boy! How tragic. It's pretty great at last to live in an England where the heir could be male or female. Is that all law now?

OP posts:
Badvoc · 01/06/2013 23:01

Also the winter king by Thomas penn
That is about Henry VII
