Should it be illegal for men to pay for prostitution?

Should we criminalise all men who pay for prostitution, alongside help for women to leave prostituion?

OP posts:
onemoreforgoodmeasure · 12/09/2012 22:36

Yes.

Just because some women agree to do it willingly does not make it ok. I hate that argument. Asking to be objectified does not make it ok to be objectified.

avaboosmummy · 12/09/2012 22:39

It is really interesting that both of you have a bad opinion of other women.
I would be so bold as to say that this comes down to the "divide and conquer" tactic of men that you believe that women are worse to other women than men.

I don't have bad opinion of other women, just direct experience from female bosses and some of the workplace/playground bitching that goes on.
I also implied that people can be nice/horrible regardles of gender.
I suppose that maybe we just assume being of the same sex will mean we're also on the same side!
Perhaps, in the workplace especially, is that in order to compete with a majority of male bosses/chief exec you are forced to pick sides. You're either with the girls or with the gals.

mcmooncup · 12/09/2012 22:39

Anyway xx, your thread went well over on Relationships Hmm

So, xx, tell me about your relationship with your mother....

SabrinaMulhollandJones · 12/09/2012 22:40

Yay for Rowan! She's deleting the troll thread.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 12/09/2012 22:40

Actually, Pretzel, MNHQ called it "goading", not "trolling". And I'm not sure that repeating the goading here really helps any.

SabrinaMulhollandJones · 12/09/2012 22:43

I don't think the goader's thread went quite as she expected...

mcmooncup · 12/09/2012 22:43

Most workplaces are often still very male dominated (i.e. most CEOs are male), and women in the workplace have all sorts of conformity issues. This can make women behave badly, I agree. And also I agree, that some women are horrible.

BUT overall it is a feminist issue - i.e. a systemic problem.

summerflower · 12/09/2012 22:47

no one can stand up and take charge or even agree on anything

I'm on it, I'm on it...

mcmooncup · 12/09/2012 22:52

xx - how did you think it was going to go when you said it turns you on fucking people's husbands for money?

mcmooncup · 12/09/2012 22:54

I don't mind her being here Rowan.

HTH Smile

RowanMumsnet · 12/09/2012 22:55

@mcmooncup

I don't mind her being here Rowan.

HTH Smile

Um, well she's not here any more... We'll look into it further in the morning.

mcmooncup · 12/09/2012 22:56

xx - you don't sounds very happy.

I'd say more angry, lacking in empathy, disrespectful of yourself and others, bit self-destructive?

carmenelectra · 12/09/2012 23:03

xxcxx

You sounded like a level headed young woman until you vomments on married men. Whilst it totally isn't your fault that these men cheat, it still isn't right that you are boasting that you get a thrill.

Men with childrens tattoo's blatently cheating are arseholes but you are a very silly girl if you get a thrill out of it. I guess you like the enpowerment of feeling you have turned the head of an attached man and that he fancies you more than his wife. Well let me tell you that is no compliment.and let's hope that one day you are not married to a man like that, who betrays you when you have children.

These men might be paying you for sex but I can bet my bottom dollar that they would not want to be married to you as they have massive double standards.

mcmooncup · 12/09/2012 23:07

Unless Richard Gere rocks up of course Wink

She sounded very much to me like she was emotionally attached to the 30 year old really hot guy with a tattoo. Mentionitus Sad

SabrinaMulhollandJones · 12/09/2012 23:10

xxc nobody's called you names here - though I've no doubt some people would, esp irl. I do think your posts sounded gloaty and goading, yet some of the things you said hint that you are just insisting that you are happy.

I do think a certain type of man (probably the punting type) like to pit women against each other. Someone mentioned madonna-whore earlier....

SabrinaMulhollandJones · 12/09/2012 23:14

I don't mind xxc being here either, but her other thread was a bit much Hmm

SabrinaMulhollandJones · 12/09/2012 23:20

I suppose I did call you a goader though Blush

My apologies.

messyisthenewtidy · 12/09/2012 23:22

Is it just me who feels completely Angry at the idea of so many wives are being cheated on and put in a dangerous position of contracting STDs without their knowledge or consent? Maybe spouses seeking escort services should require a permission slip from their wives.

I think xxcxx is just very young and caught up in that phase where she sees other women as the competition whilst men are the prize.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 12/09/2012 23:30

Escorts and women working in "reputable" brothels (for such exist) are most likely to insist on the use of condoms, even for oral sex (well, fellatio, dental dams are less commonly used).

A casual pub pick up may be less fussy, so while STIs are an issue where any sort of infidelity is concerned, they're actually less of one where "professionals" are involved. An STI can stop a prostitute working, so cost her money.

As for xxc, she's young, she's part of a generation raised in a highly sexualised context, with the explosion of internet porn. And she's taken on those cultural expectations.

SabrinaMulhollandJones · 12/09/2012 23:43

'xxcxx...sees other women as the competition and men as the prize'

Yes. And yes, she is very young and yes, I agree the online porn explosion will have had it's effect :(

messyisthenewtidy · 12/09/2012 23:44

Well then if my future DH cheats on me with a prostitute I'll try to look on the bright side Confused

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 12/09/2012 23:47

It's an ill wind, messy. :)

SabrinaMulhollandJones · 12/09/2012 23:55

Messy, the stats are in your favour- only a minority of men use prostitutes. :)
