"uni lad" and lad culture

There was a big furore recently about the "uni lad" magazine advocating rape. They closed their website to "clean up their act" but their facebook page is still so misogynistic :(
This popped up in the activity feed on my facebook the other day. I got involved but ended up having more sexist comments fired at me and in the end deleted my comments to avoid becoming a target.

Fortunately it never reached 15,000 likes but this type of behaviour is becoming more and more accepted.

What do you perceive as traditional male and female roles, lad?

Ha, I've just realised my name has "lad" and "dad" in it. Nothing to do with this thread, I assure you!

Traditional male role - as in the men being the breadwinners, the men socially taking the upper hand in social situations (NOT lad culture, but a lot more dominating nevertheless), the men driving cultural change.

Traditional females - their social sphere being more centred around home and family life, and taking a submissive standpoint.

I'm arguing that as these social/economic roles have changed drastically, the retaliation is in the form of trying to keep the women sexually submissive in the form of lad culture.

I see. But throughout a lot of history, women of the working class, which was the majority of the population, worked too, though one parent or a grandparent would've had the children with them alongside work .

All those at uni now were born in the late 80s - they've never really been aware that rape in marriage wasn't a crime till 1991 etc - why would there be a backlash against how things have been their whole lives?

YonicScrewdriver · 03/11/2014 12:20

Sorry, I know what you mean about traditional roles but I'm not sure lad culture wants to get back there - aren't traditional roles monogamous, sex after marriage type stuff, on the sex side?

ladeedad · 03/11/2014 12:25

I see what you mean, Yonic, but men were somewhat encouraged to "sow their wild oats" throughout history, even when pre-marital sex was scandalous. Their virility was one aspect from which their masculinity was judged.

Now that measure within the tight confines of the traditional social rules has been taken away from them, and sexual norms have changed drastically...so lad culture may be one way of reverting back to that way of proving masculinity through hedonism.
