Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

"uni lad" and lad culture

There was a big furore recently about the "uni lad" magazine advocating rape. They closed their website to "clean up their act" but their facebook page is still so misogynistic :(
This popped up in the activity feed on my facebook the other day. I got involved but ended up having more sexist comments fired at me and in the end deleted my comments to avoid becoming a target.

Fortunately it never reached 15,000 likes but this type of behaviour is becoming more and more accepted.

Wow those facebook comments are really depressing. What I don't understand is how these men can love women's bodies at the same time as expressing such contempt and hatred for women. It feels like some screwed up "blame Eve" psychosis.

KellyKettle · 08/04/2012 16:01

Wow, I was do tempted to comment but I don't think it would help.

FB deleted a photo of a placenta recently but shit like this just runs and runs?

There was pretty well known male feminist whose name I can't remember Blush anyway he pointed out that the rise in misogynistic and violent porn has occurred at the same time as women gaining more rights.

It's as if they're teaching us all a lesson.

flippinada · 08/04/2012 16:07

Yup AwkwardMary I have noticed a real turn for the worse since the advent of 'lad' (boak) culture. Am mid thirties.

It's not suprising that FB lets that kind of stuff stand and they are keen to delete such horrors as a placenta and women breastfeeding. It's a fucked up organisation.

Natural products of birth = horrifying, rape jokes and inciting violence against = a-ok

It's horrible.

flippinada · 08/04/2012 16:08

I reckon there's something in that messy. Women know your place kind of thing.

KellyKettle · 08/04/2012 16:09

You're right Vivian I remember finding these attitudes at Uni, feeling uncomfortable but thinking it was because I was prudish and should be more open minded. I recall a friend dumping a guy because he liked porn and it was a deal deal breaker for her. We all thought she was narrow minded & tolerated housemates watching porn, or turning it on to make us watch. It made me so uncomfortable but I accepted the culture. I wish I could go back 10 years and tell her well done.

KellyKettle · 08/04/2012 16:11

Sorry tying slowly & error-laden posts from my phone.

JosephineCD · 08/04/2012 16:13

I don't think the rise in porn has anything to do with women's rights. It's because of technology making it more easily available.

cinnamonnut · 08/04/2012 16:15

I agree VivianDarkBloom - if you can get them to listen and understand the damage these attitudes cause, you can sometimes change their minds. My boyfriend is genuinely shocked when I mention certain statistics to him (e.g. 75% of women in porn sexually abused as children) and I think there's a general prevailing culture of ignorance here, which is slowly turning into genuine hate and vitriol for women who dare to speak out.

FB will only delete pictures if they know about them, hence the report function. (Which I used). I'm not so much offended by the nudity, but by the implication that it is being published without the woman's knowledge or consent.

messyisthenewtidy · 08/04/2012 16:16

But, Vivian, I think it's deeper than just "idiotic monkeying" around by adolescent boys that will stop when girls stand up and say "no". Because the girls ARE standing up and saying "no" and they get shot down.

And shot down with a ready made range of insults (humorless, lesbian, ugly and really just wants a shag, etc) that seem specifically designed to make that objecting girl feel as she's on her own and isolated from other women. It feels like a tactic, a clever tactic of divide and conquer. I'm not saying it is a conspiracy but you've been on the receiving end of a barrage of insults from guys acting in unison against you, it sure as hell feels like one.

cinnamonnut · 08/04/2012 16:18

I reported it as nudity too, WidowWadman, but I think it would probably have been more appropriately reported as hate speech or something along those lines.

What's his FB page called? I can't find it via my phone.

cinnamonnut · 08/04/2012 16:20

Just "Uni Lad" KellyKettle

WidowWadman · 08/04/2012 16:21

I was contemplating reporting it as hate speech, but reported as nudity. There should be an "other" with a comment box.

cinnamonnut · 08/04/2012 16:22

messyisthenewtidy I can identify with that completely. A few months ago I was at a party, and a girl had drunk herself into a terrible state. She was sort of lolling around with her toga (fancy dress) falling off and a guy started taking photos and shouting "GAGGING FOR IT ISN'T SHE".

I essentially told him to stop being such a wanker and got so many insults thrown my way, mostly appearance-related, which culminated in the guy telling my boyfriend "you need to keep your girlfriend on a leash."

' I can't begin to think what can be done about it except for a LOUD OBJECTION from female students'

University authorities could be supportive, for a start. They weren't when I was there but it would be so easy to put a stop to stuff like soft porn images on posters on campus.

Obviously they do not control the social media students use but they can have firm anti-bullying policies in place and include sexist bullying in that and be as strict on it as they would (one hopes) on racist bullying.

Shock

I reported for hate speech. May try again for nudity.

KellyKettle · 08/04/2012 16:26

Thanks cinnamon

KellyKettle · 08/04/2012 16:29

He has 145.5k likes for his page?

The most shocking thing for me is the comments from women supporting what he does or slating other women.

cinnamonnut · 08/04/2012 16:36

What's nice to read the comments on the "someone give this guy a medal" post from both men and women attacking it as sexual abuse.

AyeRobot · 08/04/2012 16:39

Bet there's more than one MNer's offspring on there. They must be so proud.

cinnamonnut · 08/04/2012 16:50

AyeRobot definitely!
