anyone feel uncomfortable about Military Wives Choir?

Bennifer · 19/12/2011 13:20

That?s it really. Although I like the idea that the wives are raising money for charity ~(and that we won't have an X factor number 1), there?s something a little unsettling about the military wives angle I can?t quite put my finger on. Am I overthinking this?

One of the other choirs that Malone started was Somewhereorother Community Choir.

They are not just part of a community, but this is what binds them together, the common purpose.

It is just a name.

belgo · 19/12/2011 13:50

Could it be that they are being identified solely by the fact that they are wives?

I'm not particularly interested in hearing them. I dislike fame based on sentimentality; Susan Boyle was the prime example of that.

MudAndGlitter · 19/12/2011 13:50

But military husbands would have the same connotation of property surely?

Sorry I'm missing the point I think!

SardineQueen · 19/12/2011 13:51

But there are a trillion other names they could have chosen.

How is it possible that the only two in the entire world were military wives or military wags? People saying "oh if they weren't military wives they'd have to be military wags" as if they're the only possible options. That's odd too TBH.

MmeLindor. · 19/12/2011 13:51

Yes, but if they were not the WIVES then there would not be a choir.

That is the whole premise of the show.

And they weren't actually seeking fame, Belgo. The release of the single was not planned.

yellowraincoat · 19/12/2011 13:51

There are elements of feminism I find hard, MudAndGlitter. I like to get dressed up, high heels, short skirts, make-up. I know some in the community probably think I'm an awful traitor for that, but most feminists are fine with it.

And most are definitely fine with raising kids.

I don't think there is one defined "ok" for raising your kids, or for yourself. Only what's right for you.

Sorry for veering off topic, OP.

MudAndGlitter · 19/12/2011 13:52

What other names could they have had? Military sexual partners? Military co-habitants?

So what would you call them, SQ?

Military Choir would not be right, cause they are not serving in the military.

SardineQueen · 19/12/2011 13:53

mudandglitter I don't mind your DD wearing pink dresses and having a disney princess toy! mine have those things

I also don't think you need to justify being at home. Why do you think that? Whatever works best for you and your family is the right thing to do.

Bennifer · 19/12/2011 13:53

Why not "the Chivenor choir?"

OP posts:
SardineQueen · 19/12/2011 13:54

They could be called anything. Anything in the world. Do do with waiting, hoping blah blah etc like I said before. A million names.

Why are the only names on the table ones that refer to who they are in a relationship with?

SardineQueen · 19/12/2011 13:55

Chivenor Choir = much more classy

yellowraincoat · 19/12/2011 13:55

I'm not sure if you're married/have a partner MmeLindor, so maybe this isn't relevant to your situation. But I know I would feel diminished if my role in life was "Journalist's Wife". I wouldn't want to be defined through my partner's job and I wonder if that's what happens to these women a lot.

I think they are great, as I've said, and obviously they've made that choice. It's just a bit strange that it is still women making that choice and very rarely men.

SardineQueen · 19/12/2011 13:55

But they're not the wives of the military

GAH!

TheSmallClanger · 19/12/2011 13:55

There's something about it that prickles my feminist sensibility a bit. I'm not saying I rant at the TV or get upset about it - far from it. But there's something a bit tedious about the "men go out and do, women keep the home fires burning" implications. It's all related to the thing of men being brave by doing dangerous things, while female bravery and courage come from sitting patiently while their partner does the dangerous stuff.

DH used to have a ridiculously dangerous job. That did not make me courageous in any way related to that, but no-one would ever suggest that DH was brave for having a partner who handled snarly animals as part of her job.

Bennifer · 19/12/2011 13:57

Bluddy, I'm not sure all the women in the world (or even the UK for that matter) married to military people are either. Sorry, your point didn't make sense

I can see you wouldn't want a name like "wives, partners, and other friends of military personnel within a twenty mile radius of Chivenor choir", etc.

OP posts:
MudAndGlitter · 19/12/2011 13:57

Because I quite like that DP is in charge of earning the money, and that although I can make furniture, unblock a sink etc I prefer him to do this.
However I do feel that wages should be the same, job opportunities should be equal etc and I don't want DD growing up feeling inferior.

OK, BluddyMoFo, we've established you have no problem with the concept/name.

I'm not sure why you're resorting to mocking.

Bennifer · 19/12/2011 14:02

I think if I were to expand my point earlier, the start of the year saw the wedding of William and Kate, and the mass adulation that came with it, and it would probably be fair to say that Kate isn't a great role model for women (ok, some might argue she has nice hair), and it's ending with "the military wives choir".

My problem is that this image is being presented and celebrated and I'm sure these women are great in their own right and have interesting opinions and jobs and do wonderful things, but here, they're "wives", we're not really seeing (unless you watched the series that many didn't)

2011 seems to be a bad year for women

OP posts:
YuleingFanjo · 19/12/2011 14:02

I wouldn't buy it because I don't like the music and I don't support that kind of charity so it does slightly annoy me to think people are only buying it because they think it's a worthy cause but each to their own. I am sure some people do genuinely like it and I am sure there are lots of people out there who wouldn't supports the charity singles I might.
