Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

You don't have to be feminist to post here, but it helps...

I've noticed that whenever a 'non-feminist' view is brought up, there are occasionally some posts along the lines of 'this is a feminist board, why come here if you aren't...', etc.

Genuine question - is this a feminist board, or a board about feminism? Obviously the majority of posters are feminist, but I'm not sure whether that is because feminists (surprise surprise) like discussing feminism, or because it is seen as a feminist 'safe haven'?

garlicnutter, will be there in a while... Wink

The police believing is a big start, but if a victim thinks the only support she has is the police, that wouldn't leave her too willing to go ahead with charges.

'You've bored the tits off the entire board, very well done. You win a shrivelled nipple medal.'

What's eating you? Is something wrong? Why are you so nasty? Don't you have goodwill?

scottishmummy · 30/08/2011 21:34

gripe about the the posts, not the poster.its v illiberal to reduce to over personalising posts

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 30/08/2011 21:35

Play nice, will you?

scottishmummy · 30/08/2011 21:37

The problem is being told you aren't a good enough feminist, that's what drives people away"

Can you please link to the posts where people have said that a poster wasn't a good enough feminist, because I think that you are mistaken in believing that that happens except to people who are obviously trolling. Once again, a completely unsubstantiated assertion.

"Some people, as mentioned above, come at it from a history of abuse, which clouds how they think about things, these people shouldn't be made to feel worse."

I really don't want to attack you as you will then run off and say how scary feminists are, but really it is very patronising to imagine that just because someone has been abused, that means that everything they ever think and do is coloured by that abuse. Feminism is a political philosophy and people arrive at it through rational thought and analysis, plus their own experience or empathy for others. It is deeply, deeply patronising to use people's abuse as a means of attacking their ability to think rationally. I accept that you may not intentionally be doing this, but given that it's a brilliant way to silence and belittle feminists, can you see how that might look to people who are already constantly under attack for their opinions? You talk about how you felt when you were on a thread where lots of people disagreed with you - can you imagine how people who have experienced abuse feel, when you come on here telling them that the reason they believe what they do, which they think is based on statistics and crime figures, is actually because their abuse has damaged them and caused them to think wrongly? To paraphrase what you said: can non-feminist posters think a little before having a go - or should that be can feminists with your brand of feminism think a little before having a go. Same rules for you, you see. And I hope that you won't take that as an attack, it's not meant to be, it's just pointing out once again, the double standards about this.

yes the stigma and perception is a real man cant be raped.that he should have used his physical strength to fight back.

Dohsex · 30/08/2011 21:40

You lot are very, very funny Grin I especially liked LRD's 'you supported me in total silence' most amusing Grin

scottishmummy · 30/08/2011 21:41

oh dear god the habitual call for links and irrefutable proof
a well worn tactic to undermine and go off at tanget
and when several links, and harvard refs are not produced.the pov will be deemed be unsubstantiated

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 30/08/2011 21:41

I'm not sure, MJ. It's lower, I know that, but to what extent, I have no idea.

86, from your 21:43 post, sAf.

ChristinedePizan · 30/08/2011 21:47

The shrivelled nipple is purely to do with being bored off my tits. Nothing else.

And claig I'm sorry I don't get it. You defend lone arguments? I don't really understand taking someone's side because everyone else seems to be battling against them. Don't you have an opinion of your own? Because I will bet my last 50p that if dittany were here, she would be absolutely railing against scottishmummy. So whose side would you be on then?

scottishmummy · 30/08/2011 21:47

still plenty time for more riposte.

really you're labouring your apparent boredom. are you putting a call out for a supportive pal to pile in for you?

how very intriguing.if so and so was here....what? do you envisage would happen. are you too bored to post any more but hankering for someone else to do so?

claig · 30/08/2011 21:51

I defend what I see as being unjust.

'I don't really understand taking someone's side because everyone else seems to be battling against them.'

That's why you are you and not me. That's why you post the posts that you did about scottishmummy.

'Don't you have an opinion of your own?'
Sure do.

'if dittany were here, she would be absolutely railing against scottishmummy. So whose side would you be on then?'
It all depends what she would be railing about. If it was scottishmummy's reference to the Human Rights Act, then I would probably pass.

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 30/08/2011 21:53

sAf, at the bottom, just above add your message here, it says This thread has x messages (at the moment, 918)

Threads usually stop at 1000 posts (sometimes 1001/1002) so take 918 from 1000, and it gives you 82. Number of posts left.

HTH :)

I have a massive problem with spiders too startAfire. I have a double height room which has bloody loads of cobwebs near the ceiling and I can't reach the buggers. I might have to do some kind of lashing together of sticks or something.
