Despair. I have just heard about this establishment opening in Brighton. Does anyone know of any local campaigns against this?

It just looks like any normal restaurant to me. The way some people go on, you'd think they had topless waitresses or something. They are wearing no more or less than in thousands of other bars, nightclubs or restaurants in Britain.

Is it an anti-American thing? Would it be acceptable if an independent restaurant owned by local Brighton people opened and did the exact same thing?

David34 - sorry but either you haven't looked properly or... Is this an establishment I would want my daughter to work in?
I like the US, but have always found Hooters objectionable, even more than my dislike of: lap dancing clubs, strip clubs, etc. More objectionable because it tries to pretend it is just a "family friendly" eating place.

Do you think being a "hooters girl" is not socially acceptable? Isn't something like that up to society to decide, by choosing to spend money in Hooters or to spend it elsewhere?

Earlier this year, my daughters wento to Hooters with a group of friends - some of their friends thought it was a fun and cool thing to do. They felt deeply uncomfortable with the atmosphere there. There's a difference between being served in an environment where the staff happen to be friendly, attractive and happy and where the over riding reason for the place is for the staff to be sexy and flirtatious in a compulsory way.

I know quite clearly where the dividing line is for me and my daughters have discovered it for themselves. Are you able to make the distinction David34?

I haven't been to a hooters. I am under the impression that it's just a normal resturarant, not a lapdancing club or something like that.

What kind of places are there where the staff "happen" to be friendly attractive and happy? What restuarants have you been to where the staff are surly, unattractive and miserable? I can't imagine an establishment like that staying open for very long.

Hooters also refuses to employ men as waiters. Of course, if David34 is happy about a company that can also discriminate in this way, that is his choice.

I take it you don't live in a small town! Plenty of restaurants where the staff are less than five star. Not just restaurants; hotels etc too. Isn't that why review sites are so popular?

I suppose my point is that, not just for the female staff at Hooters, but for everyone in society, there's a line between being naturally attractive etc and where it becomes a requirement or obligation to someone else's standards and it carries some sort of penalty for 'failure'. Maybe it's a distinction I make that you don't. :shrug:

OP, have you thought about approaching your MP? I suspect Caroline Lucas might be sympathetic to your argument and she'd probably know if anyone already has set up a campaign.

Noddy, I know. I lived in Brighton for about 15 years and saw it change a lot, mostly for the better. I moved out several years ago to just along the coast and visit frequently.

I am really surprised, disappointed and, well, shocked.

Is there any point in having a forum where everyone just agrees with each other? It just makes feminists even more out of touch when no-one from the non-feminist world is allowed to challenge their views.

If you don't want to be viewed as extremist cloud-cuckoo landers, you must be prepared to argue with normal lay people. Otherwise what chance do you have in changing things for the better?

David34 in fairness the not-quite opening post was asking for campaigns relting to Hooters opening in brighton rather than a debate on the rights and wrongs of hooters but I can see why the thread might end up that way.

Were you around for a similar thread when Hooters opened in Bristol? There were some robust arguements for and against Hooters on that thread and if I recall correctly plenty of challenging and the sort of debate that you seem to want to engage in. Would you like me to find a link for you?
