Nick Freeman (AKA Mr Loophole), lawyer to the stars, had this to say in his column for the Manchester Evening News yesterday. A friend who lives in Manchester has e-mailed me the article.

Because yes, of course, if a woman is dressed in a certain way, she is only out to attract/lure men.

Arsehole.

I love the end of the advert dontcallmepeanut where she looks right at the camera and says 'as if'.
It gives this appalling attitude the level of derision it deserves

Bramshott · 15/06/2011 15:12

Don'tCall - no, don't worry, I was being ironic too! I was agreeing that that's a basic and surely obvious point to anyone with half a brain (which is not residing in their trousers!).

KD - exactly - poor Fred, he must be so confused what with all these women walking around tempting (nay 'victimising' if we are to believe Mr Freeman) him from every side!

PurpleStrawberry · 15/06/2011 15:14

Such a great advert.

I just answered the 'do you know' questions, I was too optimistic with some of them.

All the statistics are depressing but the 3% conviction rate in Scotland is the most depressing of all.

DontCallMePeanut · 15/06/2011 15:15

Phew, it''s sometimes a bit difficult to tell over the net Grin

And oh my god, I think I hugged Fred from accounts the other day... He really should have jumped me... Especially as I had a bit of cleavage on display Wink Tut.

DontCallMePeanut · 15/06/2011 15:16

Purple, I think the 3% conviction rate is up there with the most depressing things I've ever read. And we wonder why more women don't come forward. :(

KD0706 · 15/06/2011 15:20

It's hard to tell tone over these message boards isn't it. I usually would have put a smiley when Tongue in cheek but it's not really a smiley subject is it???

I didn't know the 3% rate. Appalling. Even if we accept that there could be untrue accusations it would be nowhere near 97% of complaints

Bramshott · 15/06/2011 15:21

Actually, to help Fred (and his ilk) I think I may get a badge printed which says "Yes, I am looking for sex, but NO, I don't want to have it with you" Wink

You're right though, it's no joking matter really Sad.

DontCallMePeanut · 15/06/2011 15:23

I think I read somewhere that the untrue accusation rate was the same for rape as any other crime 6-8%. Yet these get publicised so much more than the convicted rape cases, or the ones that aren't proven untrue.

PurpleStrawberry · 15/06/2011 15:32

Having witnessed my DH's brother get cleared of rape, after his 'consensual rough sex' defence (the medical evidence showed evidence of rape, the defence called an expert who said you'd expect the same 'injuries' with consensual rough sex), I sat there in court and wondered on what grounds a jury WILL convict a rapist?

Even my DH believed, well still believes, his brother is guilty such was the evidence.

The whole thing beggars belief.

As you said DCMP, it's no wonder so many women won't even report rape.

I haven't read the link - I was basing what I said on this;

'Because yes, of course, if a woman is dressed in a certain way she is only out to attract/lure men'

Well yes, in a lot of cases she is.

And it's naive to expect all males apart from your Dh/DP/Nigel from accounts to avert their eyes when you're dressed provocatively - because of course they're expected to act like robots aren't they - my eyes have been almost hanging out of my head at some men - 99 percent of them are 'not available' it doesn't stop me looking does it - I'm human.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 15/06/2011 16:06

How about reading the link? It might help with the context of the conversation we're actually having.

joaninha · 15/06/2011 16:07

Oooh the other day I saw a well fit bloke walking down the street with no top on and a load of tattoos all over his well toned tanned body. Yum! I love tattoos and must admit to entertaining a few horizontal scenarios in my mind.

I really don't know how I managed to stop myself leaping across the road and pinning him to the pavement! Especially as he was obviously "asking for it"! Lol!

DontCallMePeanut · 15/06/2011 16:09

So, it couldn't possibly be because it makes her feel good? Or for her DP/DH? Or maybe even, god forbid comfort?

And looking at someone is not raping someone.

Rape is about power. It is NOT ABOUT WHAT SOMEONE WEARS!

Primalscream · 15/06/2011 16:10

And.....

If I left my brand new Mazda in sainsbury's car park with the keys in the ignition, would it still be there when I came out? Even if I put a nice polite note in the window - ' only to be driven by primalscream '

Dream on

DontCallMePeanut · 15/06/2011 16:11

Especially as he was obviously "asking for it"! That man must have obviously been a complete SLUT! If you had jumped on him, it WOULD have been his fault for daring to dress in such a manner... Men only dress like that for attention, y'know...

DontCallMePeanut · 15/06/2011 16:13

Oooh, the old comparing rape to fucking burglary trick.

I'll say this again.

Rape. Is. Not. About. What. The. Woman. Is. Wearing.

Ever.

Get that? Otherwise, every woman who's ever set foot on a beach or in a swimming pool wearing a bikini or swimsuit would have been sexually assaulted...

malinois · 15/06/2011 16:15

From a man who makes his money by keeping drunk drivers on the road. What a massive cock.

"As a red-blooded alpha male...." Oh do fuck off.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 15/06/2011 16:17

The difference between a bloody car and a woman's body is that a car cannot and does not want to decide who drives it, it is inanimate, FGS.

Women are not objects, they are PEOPLE. It's not that hard, it really isn't.

slug · 15/06/2011 16:17

I posted a reasonable and succinct response about the use of rape myths to justify criminal behaviour on the Evening Standard website. Somewhat surprisingly it wasn't published Hmm

Bramshott · 15/06/2011 16:18

By that scenario could all women wearing a wedding ring be seen as being "asking for it"? I mean, clearly they are indicating their consent to sex by indicating that they are married. And if we've already established that once women are "up for it" in sexual terms, it doesn't matter WHO they are consenting to having sex with . . . .

Primalscream · 15/06/2011 16:18

I'm not talking about rape - I'm talking about male 'attention'

Overcooked · 15/06/2011 16:21

Primalscream

So what if she does do it to attract men, she still has a right to say no. I go shopping to buy food, it doesn't mean I then have to buy everything in the shop.

What has happened to you to warp your view so much?

DontCallMePeanut · 15/06/2011 16:21

Define male attention. You posts are becoming suprisingly ambiguous, and it would be ever so easy for someone to use your defences of "male attention" as defences for rape.

Oh.

Wait a fucking minute.

THEY ALREADY DO!

Riveninside · 15/06/2011 16:21

There wasa bunch of letters in the paper to this effect. Men are visually aroused, blah de blah, biological etc etc
So wearing little, they cant help it and while most men dont rape, some do so if you arouse them ad nauseum
Grrrr
