There's an article about this in the Times today by Libby Purves, provoked by Lionel Shriver's portrayal of the boy in 'We need to talk about Kevin'

Just thought you'd like to know Smile

Grin slug, reading your post and nodding all the way - so true! And Tyr seems to think it's actually unfair of us to suggest he might present an argument instead of picking on grammar/spelling, too - it's a classic teenage whiny 'oooh, but Miss, she's WRONG, isn't she, she's wrong too so that makes me right!'

Oh Catmilk - please don't go

"I've got boys, I've got a man, I've got good, GOOD male relatives..."

That's exactly why I said I had changed from being a man-disparaging sometime feminist when it suited me to being a full-time feminist. I did respond to you fully on your thread (not sure how that can be construed as vindictive?) but you don't seem to want to respond.

Catmilk · 13/06/2011 15:40

HellAtWork, seeing as it matter a lot to you I will respond to your post at some point, ok? Bit busy today.xxx

Oh and celadon 'Don't choke on your popcorn' isn't a threat either.

HellAtWork · 13/06/2011 16:56

Marvellous. So happy you deigned to reply Catmilk and have postponed your flounce forthwith. Look forward to it!

ps. If you want to do surveys, best to use surveymonkey. Quantitative research is not what MN is geared up for. People tend to veer drastically off topic as you have discovered. You could always do a survey on surveymonkey (free) and then post a link to it if you genuinely wanted to do quant stuff.

"don't choke on your popcorn" can be a threat depending on the tone used and seeing as we don't know Tyr's tone, we don't know if that is the tone.

In New Orleans, walked into a shop with my black friend and bloke behind counter said "don't fall over" to my friend. That was definitely a not so veiled threat because of the menacing tone used. He also said "Be careful out there" in the same tone as we quickly exited. He might as well have said No Blacks in my shop.

So I think for Tyr - either s/he

(a) has some kind of Health &Safety obsession with other people's well being (is that what you thought Catmilk? s/he has issued warnings to other posters too) and is genuinely concerned for Celadon's wellbeing; or
(b) the sarcastic subtext to 'Dont choke on your popcorn" is actually "Hope you choke on your popcorn" in which case it is a threat.

Tyr - do you work in Health & Safety?

Catmilk · 13/06/2011 17:26

Someone here mentioned laughing at something, settling down with some popcorn... I took Tyr was sarcastically saying 'oh that is SO funny I agree! Don't choke on yr popcorn at how hilarious at is!"

Similar to 'careful your sides don't split!' said sarcatically.

I don't know Tyr - but you asked me how interpreted that phrase, and that's genuinely how it makes sense to me. I don't really see how it works as a threat tbh.

sparky246 · 13/06/2011 22:39

Cat-im glad you still hereSmile
dont worry about tyr[or what fuckin name he is]
he come here with with male privalege and tryed to put this forward-

sparky x

Tyr · 13/06/2011 22:56

Thank you, Catmilk, for pointing out what ought to have occurred to some of them in the first place.
It?s easy to see how, for some, allegations against men arise so readily.

sparky246 · 13/06/2011 23:10

i thought you fucked off tyr.
still jumping here though to look for people to stroke youre male privalege.
sad-my bollocks are bigger than youres-how do you feel[again too much above you]
whats the matter-other blokes wont stroke youre bollocks and making you feel small?
so you have to come here and find a woman who is struggling?
fuck off tyr.
leave her alone.

Tyr · 13/06/2011 23:11

Leave who alone?

sparky246 · 13/06/2011 23:21

oh the woman you just spoke to-sorry for youre thickness.
tyr-can we stop this now-youre dick will just become shorter and youre male privaledge less-youre on a losing battle-trust me.

Tyr · 13/06/2011 23:25

I think you'll find that I thanked her (I assume you're referring to Catmilk)
Can you at least get someone to translate before you react?

sparky246 · 13/06/2011 23:34

i dont need translasion-feminists can see what im on about-
and since this is a feministd board im doing ok-
we dont need translation for male privaledge-no matter where we come from.
try again.
